Nightmare is said to be a mysterious dark art that influences a person's nerves through blood, tormenting them based on their inner fears until they are driven to death.
Mu Xuanche came to mind as I recalled the book's description of this Nightmare. It seems the Cult of Spirits has no intention of letting me go.
The ancient text described this Nightmare as a kind of formation, with Chen Sang being the ghostly figure at its center, specifically designed to harm others.
Now I understand how Liu Lili, who died in the bathroom, met her end. Her cause of death was likely due to wounds that could not heal on their own, leading to excessive bleeding.
I realized I must capture Chen Sang as soon as possible; she has already been turned into a killing machine by the Cult of Spirits. If this continues, I dread to think how many more will fall victim.
I hurried down from the bed, preparing to get dressed.
"What do you think you're doing?"
I turned to see Mu Xuanche, looking anxious.
"I'm going to school to find Chen Sang. She's a killing machine now, and I need to stop her," I replied. Then I added to Shangguan Mingyue, "Hurry up and get ready; come with me."
However, Shangguan Mingyue looked at me in sheer terror, desperately signaling me with her eyes.
A chill swept over my neck, causing me to shiver as cold sweat trickled down my back.
Cautiously turning around, I squinted my eyes at the sight before me. The frown on his brow was tightly knotted, and an unpleasant aura surrounded him.
“Gu Yanxi…”
For the first time, I realized how intimidating my name could be. After Mu Xuanche spoke it, my entire body couldn't help but tremble.
I forced a smile at him, trying to please him, “I’m here, I’m here.”
“You want to go out,” he said.
A cold light flashed in his eyes. Although his smile was gentle, my heart instantly turned icy.
In just two seconds, I took off the coat I had just put on and lay back down on the bed, appearing obedient.
I shook my head and said to him, “No, it’s Mingyue. She wants to go out.”
At that moment, it was a case of “misery loves company.” Shangguan Mingyue looked so shocked that her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as she stared at me with a look that suggested she wanted to sever ties.
She pouted, looking aggrieved. “You guys have fun; I’m leaving.”
“Bang!”
The loud sound of the door slamming shut signaled Shangguan Mingyue’s anger. Once I dealt with this big bad wolf in front of me, I would go comfort her properly.
His face was like a giant ice block, devoid of any trace of a smile, making my heart shiver at the sight.
"Lie down properly," he commanded.
I immediately complied, lying still and not daring to move.
"Go to sleep."
This command made me hesitate. I was afraid to sleep; I feared that nightmare. I worried that if I closed my eyes, those ghosts would come looking for me again.
Trembling, I reached out and tugged at his sleeve. His expression softened considerably as he pulled back the covers and lay down beside me. He wrapped his arms around me, and his slightly cool embrace felt particularly comforting.
"I'll stay with you; there's nothing to be afraid of," he said gently from above.
Though we were both tired, his voice brought a sense of security that allowed me to drift off to sleep almost instantly.
I don't know how long it had been when I was jolted awake by Mu Xuanche.
Why did I always wake up in the middle of the night? I had no idea what he was up to.
"I want to sleep a little longer," I mumbled.
"Let me take you somewhere,"
Mu Xuanche helped me into my coat and carried me out the door.
As soon as we stepped outside, a black sedan was parked downstairs.
Seeing Mu Xuanche come out, the driver, who had been standing to the side, respectfully rushed over, opened the car door, and bowed slightly as he waited.
Once I settled into the car, I quietly observed the meticulous driver in front of me. After confirming that he showed no signs of anything unusual, I felt safe enough to speak to Mu Xuanche.
"Where did this driver come from? Why do you have a car?"
Mu Xuanche glanced down at me. "Who told you I can't have a car?"
I wondered where he got the money from, but seeing the cold expression on Mu Xuanche's face still lingering, I dared not push my luck. Instead, I changed the subject and asked him, "Where are we going now?"
"You'll know when we get there."
After more than half an hour in the car, we finally stopped in front of an alleyway.
Mu Xuanche carried me out of the car. I initially intended to get down and walk myself, but a single glare from him made me shrink back instantly.
Curiosity bubbled within me as I pondered where he was taking me. My eyes darted around, searching for clues.
When he stopped in front of a dilapidated clinic, I felt a bit puzzled.
"Is this where you were going to take me?" I asked, pointing at the sign that read "Bian Que Clinic."
He nodded and stepped forward to knock on the door.
There was no response at first, and just when I thought the clinic was empty, a ghost floated out from inside.
Upon seeing Mu Xuanche, the ghost immediately knelt down and exclaimed, "Xuan Wang."
The master called Mu Xuanche "Xuan Wang," and so did the ghost.
What exactly is Mu Xuanche's identity? It all seemed like a mystery.
"Open the door," Mu Xuanche commanded, and the ghost respectfully opened the door, sneaking a couple of glances at me in Mu Xuanche's arms, his eyes filled with astonishment.
Cradled in his embrace, we walked further inside.
I had initially thought this clinic would be small, but as we continued deeper, it felt like we hadn't reached the end even after walking for quite a while.
Surrounded by various hanging human skins, from the dry ones on the outside to the fresh ones within, I must have seen no less than a hundred as I descended.
I was so terrified that I couldn't utter a word, my hands tightly clutching Mu Xuanche's clothing.
Finally, when we reached a skin still dripping with blood, Mu Xuanche stopped.
"Come out," he said coldly.
As his voice echoed, a figure dropped down from the end of the wall.
Dressed in pure white, not a speck of dust on him, his long black hair danced in the wind. His handsome face appeared even more striking under the light, exuding an air of cold charm.
Ruo Chuchu Chen was stunningly beautiful, and this young man before me was breathtakingly so.
He glanced at Mu Xuanche and said with a teasing tone, "Oh, the arrival of Xuan Wang! I apologize for not welcoming you properly."
"Oh dear, Xuan Wang is here! We should prepare a skin to greet him properly," he continued.
The white-clad man waved his hand in front of a row of human skins before letting it drop in disappointment, his expression filled with anger.
"None of these skins are good enough. Wait for me, Xuan Wang; let me find something better," he said, his alluring eyes fixed on me as he extended his slender fingers toward me. "Oh, this skin isn't bad; cut it off and give it to me."
I recoiled, avoiding his hand. This pervert actually wanted my skin, what a pathetic man.
“She is my wife,”
Mu Xuanche said calmly, causing that pervert to retract his hand and turn away.
“Boring, right? What do you want from me?”
His voice instantly transformed into a deep, masculine tone, completely different from the earlier effeminate one. I was taken aback.
Mu Xuanche urged me to extend my hand toward the man. The man shot a glare at Mu Xuanche before placing his hand on my wrist.
A few seconds later, he flung my hand away and impatiently muttered as he turned to leave,
“Poisoned by Nightmare, no cure. Goodbye.”
I hadn’t expected this guy to be so perceptive; just by grabbing my wrist, he knew I was poisoned and even mentioned Nightmare. No wonder Mu Xuanche brought me to him.
But this guy seemed beyond my reach now. Was it really hopeless?
Mu Xuanche coldly called out, “Bai Qiling,”
The man paused for a moment, then turned back with a smile. “Come in.”
The guy's name turned out to be Bai Qiling, and it seemed he was mostly trying to scare me.
After entering the room, Bai Qiling instructed Mu Xuanche to lay me on the bed. He then walked over and tied a black cord around my wrist.
Before long, his expression grew increasingly grim, and the atmosphere around him became particularly cold and stern.
"You’re pregnant," he said, glaring at me as he left those words hanging in the air.
I glanced at Mu Xuanche and saw that he didn’t object, so I obediently nodded.
Bai Qiling stood up, looking seriously at Mu Xuanche. "There's no choice; she’s pregnant."
Mu Xuanche's face darkened as he threw out two words: "Explain."
"The antidote for Nightmare is to replace all the blood in the body. Normally, that could be attempted, but right now there’s no way. If you really want to save her, you can only terminate the child in her womb first to ensure her survival."
"Terminate it," Mu Xuanche said without a hint of hesitation. The moment I heard those three words, I was stunned. He was actually willing to sacrifice my child to save me.
"Are you sure?" Bai Qiling asked.
Mu Xuanche nodded, and I finally reacted, turning over.
"No,"
I shouted, covering my stomach with both hands and continuously retreating.
This child absolutely cannot be aborted. I looked at the two men in front of me in terror, backing away further.
Mu Xuanche had always been ruthless; his words had never changed. I was worried, even more afraid, and my heart was racing too fast, making it hard to breathe.
The figures of Mu Xuanche and Bai Qiling suddenly multiplied before my eyes, going from one to several.
My head spun, and everything went black as I fainted.
