Master returned to Xuanzong, needing to rush back for some matters, leaving the Senior Brother to take care of us.
Throughout it all, I never mentioned the situation with Shangguan Mingyue to Master. I feared that if I spoke up, there would be no turning back.
After a moment of contemplation, I ultimately decided to act as if I knew nothing.
"Yan Xi, what are you thinking about?"
Shangguan Mingyue called out to me. This morning, we had been summoned here by President Chen, who personally brought people to block us.
I pulled my thoughts back and smiled at her, indicating that I was just tired from not sleeping well.
The Senior Brother, Shangguan Mingyue, and I were arranged in the hall, listening to President Chen ramble on.
He looked quite pitiful, having stayed at the temple for a week now, too afraid to return home.
His body was covered in various talismans and protective charms, his face filled with fear. It seemed he wanted nothing more than to cling to us for safety.
Seeing that we were silent, the Senior Brother spoke up and asked President Chen, "President Chen, what dreams have you been having lately?"
Upon hearing this question from the Senior Brother, President Chen's expression became somewhat peculiar. He first flinched nervously and then appeared a bit embarrassed.
This piqued our curiosity; could there be more to this than met the eye?
Clearly, I wasn't the only one who noticed this change in him. The Senior Brother pressed on, "President Chen, please share the details of your dreams with us; otherwise, we won't be able to help you."
President Chen glanced at me and Shangguan Mingyue, looking somewhat awkward. After hesitating for a moment, he finally began to speak.
"I've been dreaming every night lately about beautiful women, but just when it gets to the climax, they always turn into terrifying figures that wake me up. I have several dreams in one night; as soon as I close my eyes, I'm dreaming again."
After pondering for a while, the senior brother decided to let President Chen sleep here tonight.
Meanwhile, Shangguan Mingyue and I were assigned to President Chen's room. I hid in the wardrobe while Shangguan Mingyue took refuge under the bed.
To prevent our identities from being discovered, the senior brother gave each of us a concealment talisman, meant to hide our presence.
As the clock struck midnight, I crouched in the wardrobe and caught a glimpse of Shangguan Mingyue through the gap between the two doors.
"Is it here yet?"
Shangguan Mingyue communicated with me using hand gestures, knowing I could see her.
I shook my head from inside the wardrobe. She understood from the shadow swaying on the ground.
She slumped down in frustration, complaining about how comfortable President Chen was above while she had to endure pain on the floor.
She wanted to crawl out for a moment of rest but was held back by my gaze.
I sensed a wave of Yin Qi approaching, and soon she felt it too. We both remained still, waiting for the female ghost to arrive.
A white shadow floated in. The moment I saw it from my hiding place in the wardrobe, I was frozen in fear.
Shangguan Mingyue desperately signaled me with her eyes, urging me to tell her what was happening.
But I couldn't describe it at all because I saw a headless female corpse, one arm broken, slowly dragging itself toward the bed.
When she turned her back to me, I was instantly terrified and stumbled backward into the cabinet. Her eyes were wide open, yet she remained silent.
It turned out she didn't lack a head; her neck was severed, and her entire head hung behind her. Her long black hair cascaded down her back, and where her eyes should have been were two gaping blood holes, yet her mouth curled into a strange smile.
I watched as she crawled onto President Chen's bed. I had intended to call out to Shangguan Mingyue, but I was stunned by the ghost's next move.
The ghost actually pulled down President Chen's pajama pants and began to engage in a series of lewd acts with him.
You can imagine the position—it was like a girl practicing a dance move, bending backward. Since the ghost's head was behind her, she had to adopt that posture to use her mouth.
I shifted my gaze to President Chen, who appeared to be enjoying himself in his sleep.
This was how his spring dream unfolded. When President Chen suddenly woke up again, the ghost stepped back.
Seeing her attempt to strangle President Chen, I could no longer hold back. I greeted Shangguan Mingyue and dashed out.
Both of us appeared simultaneously; the ghost clearly acted alone as she swiftly reached for President Chen.
I knew she intended to use him as leverage against us. I took a quick step forward and blocked her arm with Shiro.
Since she only had one hand, her movements were slower than mine, allowing me to seize the opportunity.
Shangguan Mingyue rushed over to protect President Chen while I moved forward to confront the ghost.
The ghost stood still, laughing at me with her back turned.
“Cackling…”
The sound sent chills down my spine, and I began to feel dazed. Deep down, I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't do anything about it.
The female ghost lunged at me, her hand gripping my throat. The thought of that same hand being on President Chen’s body made me feel nauseous, and I trembled all over.
The ghost turned around, her face now directed at me as she charged forward.
It was too disgusting; I couldn't take it anymore. With determination, I bit down hard on my tongue.
As blood flowed from the wound, my consciousness snapped back into focus. I pulled out Shiro and lunged at her, causing the ghost to step back.
She steadied herself, ready to fight me.
“Ha ha, ha ha…”
Suddenly, the ghost laughed triumphantly. Before I could grasp what she was planning, she rushed at me and wrapped her arms around me. I struggled to break free but found it impossible.
“Yan Xi, run! She wants to drag you down with her!”
From a distance, Shangguan Mingyue shouted anxiously at me.
I saw her trying to rush over, but it seemed like there was an invisible barrier preventing her from entering my space to save me.
She kept crashing into it, but each time she was thrown back. I watched as blood began to trickle from her head due to the repeated impacts.
It seems that my rush back here won't be in vain; at least I can save a friend.
However, the most important thing right now is to get rid of this female ghost in front of me.
Wretch, she actually wants to drag me down with her, to become a human bomb.
For my own sake, and for the child in my belly, I can't let her succeed.
I struggle desperately, but she climbs onto me, completely trapping me.
"Gu Yanxi, give up. You can't escape,"
That voice is so familiar; it's the female ghost speaking.
I've definitely heard her voice before; it's too familiar.
"Ha ha, Gu Yanxi, if I can drag you down with me into oblivion, I would gladly do it,"
As she speaks again, I recognize her; it's Yuan Yuan. No wonder the iron hook hanging from Mrs. Chen's mouth felt so familiar—it was Yuan Yuan's earring, the same one she wore when I met her at Zhenhua Technology.
Could it be that she was set up by Chuchen? Did she lay this trap just to take my life?
Otherwise, why wait until now to torment President Chen?
This madwoman—I have to get rid of her; otherwise, I'm really going to die.
I grab Shiro and try to stab her, but she shows no fear at all, completely unresponsive. Instead, she laughs maniacally, a smug expression on her face as she speaks to me.
“Gu Yanxi, don’t waste your effort; it’s useless. This trap was set specifically to deal with you. Do you really think those people are here to save you? All they want is your life. Hahaha, just wait for your soul to scatter.”
I seemed to understand now; Chuchen hadn’t appeared out of nowhere—he had been targeting me from the very beginning.
Yuan Yuan’s soul had been manipulated; her existence was solely to kill me.
The Cult of Spirits truly spared no effort in dealing with someone like me, resorting to such underhanded tactics.
Time didn’t allow me to think further. I needed to find a way to escape Yuan Yuan, but she gleefully counted down in my ear.
I struck her chest fiercely with my fist, but she didn’t budge at all.
She continued her countdown while I absolutely refused to give up.
As the final second approached, I swiftly drove Shiro into my shoulder.
In an instant, blood sprayed across my face and splattered onto Yuan Yuan behind me.
“Ah!”
With a scream, she released me, collapsing to the ground with a hissing sound.
I fell weakly onto the ground; I had plunged that knife without holding back at all.
I thought I could escape Yuan Yuan, but I never expected her resentment to be so heavy, her hatred for me so deep.
Struggling to get up, she lunged at me again.
Her body burned against mine, and this time, I barely had the strength to push her away.
The only option left was to stab at her stomach, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I was still carrying a child; I couldn't possibly kill her.
Shangguan Mingyue kept trying to break in, but she crashed into the door, bloodied and battered, with no effect.
Why hadn't my senior brother come yet? Did he not know what was happening here?
Mu Xuanche was gone; no one would come to save me.
Despair washed over me as I closed my eyes. It seemed there was no escape this time.
