It seemed that Shangguan Mingyue was a bit confused by my question. She glanced at me and said, "Didn’t you come back by yourself this afternoon? How could you forget?"
"I saw you sleeping so uncomfortably on the bed when I returned just now. I was worried something might be wrong, so I stayed to take care of you. Did you have a nightmare?"
I hadn’t had a nightmare; what I experienced was far worse than any dream.
Just a few moments ago, I had nearly been assaulted by several men.
"Yan Xi, what's wrong? Don't scare me. If something's bothering you, just tell me."
I knew Shangguan Mingyue was concerned about me, but I really wasn’t in the mood to talk. I turned my back to her and waved my hand dismissively. "I'm fine, just too tired. You want to go out, right?"
"Ugh..."
A heavy sigh escaped Shangguan Mingyue from behind me.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
There was a loud noise coming from outside the door, but I ignored it. Shangguan Mingyue stood up to open the door.
"Excuse me, is Gu Yanxi here?"
Hearing a strange man calling my name made my body tense up.
"Yan Xi, the police are looking for you."
The police were looking for me.
I turned around, slowly climbed out of bed, and walked to the door.
Three police officers stood outside the door. When they saw me approaching, they signaled for Shangguan Mingyue to step aside, and then surrounded me.
"What do you want?" My voice trembled uncontrollably. After what had happened earlier that afternoon, I was particularly afraid of being cornered like this.
"You are Gu Yanxi," one of the officers said, holding a document with my photo.
"Yes," I replied honestly.
The officer who had asked me nodded and said, "Gu Yanxi, you are now suspected of being involved in a homicide. Please come with us to the police station for questioning."
"Homicide? What homicide?" My mind immediately flashed back to the incident from earlier. Had those people died? Or had Yuan Yuan died, which is why they were looking for me?
"Gu Yanxi, the driver who was with you this afternoon, Guo Changhua, is dead. Please cooperate with us and come to the station to assist in the investigation," the officer explained.
I was stunned. How could that driver be dead?
Shangguan Mingyue had originally intended to accompany me to the police station, but the officers refused her request.
"Don't worry," she told me. "I'll go find someone to help."
I never expected I would have the chance to ride in a police car, especially while handcuffed. I silently chuckled at the sight of the shiny cuffs on my wrists.
At the police station, in the interrogation room, besides the officer who brought me in, there was also a female officer. Perhaps to take care of my emotions, she began the questioning: "Gu Yanxi, were you with Guo Changhua at three o'clock this afternoon?"
"Yes, he was the driver assigned to us by President Chen of Zhenhua Technology. He took me home this afternoon."
The first time I was questioned by the police, I felt genuinely nervous, especially in such a suffocating atmosphere.
The female officer nodded slightly and continued, "Were you with him between three and four in the afternoon?"
During that time, I had been taken to the abandoned factory by Yuan Yuan, and I had no way to explain where I was. I shook my head to indicate that I wasn't.
"Then where were you during that time?" The female officer's voice began to turn cold and hard.
"I was... I was..."
My trembling limbs made it nearly impossible for me to speak. I certainly couldn't say that I was being assaulted at that moment.
As I struggled to find words, the female officer grew angry.
With a loud slap, she slammed her pen down on the table, startling me so much that my body jolted. She then glared at me with wide eyes.
"Gu Yanxi, I'm asking you a question. Please answer me. Where were you between three and four in the afternoon?"
I desperately shook my head, trying to prove my innocence. I blurted out, "I didn't! I didn't kill anyone! You have to believe me!"
"Gu Yanxi, I'm giving you one more chance to answer my question seriously," the female officer emphasized again.
My response remained the same: "I didn't kill anyone! I didn't kill anyone..."
Seeing my reaction, the female officer softened her tone and guided me, "Gu Yanxi, we already have substantial evidence. All we need is for you to tell us the truth. Just tell me how you killed Guo Changhua, and I will help you seek a lighter sentence."
She tried to tempt me into confessing, but I truly hadn’t done anything. I had no idea how that driver had died; how could I confess?
I shook my head again. "No, I didn’t."
With a loud thud, the Female Officer angrily threw the remote control in front of me. "Gu Yanxi, I can’t believe you’re so young yet so good at lying. In front of the evidence, let’s see how you can keep lying. Open your eyes and see if that’s you in the video."
I turned to look at the wall where a video was being projected.
It seemed to be footage from the car's surveillance camera. In the frame, I was chatting and laughing with the driver, Guo Changhua. We both appeared to be having a good time.
The timestamp on the footage showed around 4:40 PM, but there was no memory of that moment in my mind.
If I had spoken with Guo Changhua, how could I possibly forget?
Then, in the video, I could be seen reaching out to twist off the camera, plunging the entire scene into darkness. The video ended there.
"No, that person on the screen can’t be me," I shouted at the Female Officer, hoping she would believe me.
But she crossed her arms and stepped in front of me, looking down at me with disdain. "Alright, let me ask you this: if you didn’t kill him, then why did you turn off the camera?"
I struggled to defend myself. "No, it wasn’t me; that person in the video isn’t me."
"Gu Yanxi, do you think we police officers are all three-year-olds to be toyed with? The forensic expert has already determined that Guo Changhua died around 4 PM. The only person with him at that time was you."
The female police officer leaned over my desk, staring at me intently.
"Gu Yanxi, stop lying," she said firmly.
"I... I..."
I couldn't find the words. The officer's face loomed larger in front of me, transforming from one into two, then three...
My head spun increasingly, and suddenly, everything went dark as I lost consciousness.
When I woke up again, I found myself in a hospital bed.
The room was crowded with people—police officers and my master among them.
I tried to move, but realized my hands were cuffed to the bed.
Looking at the shiny silver handcuffs, I felt an overwhelming sense of injustice, and tears began to fall.
"Yan Xi, don't cry. We believe you didn't kill anyone," Shangguan Mingyue said from a distance, trying to comfort me. She couldn't come closer; the police wouldn't allow it.
My master and Li Mubai also looked at me with trusting eyes, which brought me a bit of warmth. If it weren't for them, I feared I wouldn't be able to hold on much longer.
"Yan Xi, don't be afraid. Master will help you find the truth," my master reassured me.
"Okay," I nodded through my tears, covering my mouth to stifle any sounds of crying.
Bang.
The door to the hospital ward was slammed open, and the two police officers beside me immediately drew their guns, aiming at the entrance.
When they saw that the newcomer was one of their colleagues, they holstered their weapons.
The officer who rushed in shouted in a panic, "That Guo Changhua has escaped!"
One of the other officers scolded him, "How can a dead man run? Are you blind?"
"I'm serious! He suddenly came back to life and ran away!"
Then, leaving one officer behind, the rest rushed out.
The atmosphere in the room grew tense. Master left Shangguan Mingyue to take care of me while he and the senior brother went to see what was happening.
By afternoon, I was released by the police.
It turned out that Guo Changda was not dead; he had escaped from the Forensic Room. Since he was alive, my murder charges were dropped, and I only needed to cooperate with the police investigation.
However, I still couldn't leave the hospital. I asked Shangguan Mingyue what illness I had, but she didn't know.
"Yan Xi, it's not that I don't want to tell you; I truly have no idea. All I know is that it was Master's order to keep it a secret. The director of this hospital is a friend of Master's, so aside from the police and Master, only the doctors know what illness you have."
Could it be that I had some terminal illness? Otherwise, why would Master keep my condition so tightly under wraps?
As I pondered these thoughts, Master and Li Mubai walked in from outside.
After entering, the Master sat down at the foot of my bed. Li Mubai took Shangguan Mingyue out and closed the door behind them.
With a click, the sound of the door locking made my heart skip a beat. Seeing the Master's serious expression, I sat up straight and asked him, "Master, do I have some incurable disease? Why do you look so grave? Please don't scare me."
The Master sighed deeply before replying, "You child, you just won't listen. How could I harm you? I told you to drink White Fungus Soup, but you refused. Now look where we are."
I was taken aback and blinked in confusion as I asked, "What do you mean?"
"You are pregnant."
