What an audacious couplet to write!
Fate is not to be trusted; it is determined by oneself.
"Mu Xuanche, why aren't you replying? What does this couplet mean?"
I had no idea why Mu Xuanche suddenly turned cold; something felt off about him.
Bang!
With a few punches from Mu Xuanche, the stone door shattered into pieces.
The loud crash made my heart ache.
Once inside, Mu Xuanche told me to wait in place while he went to check the back of the tomb chamber.
Before I could even nod in agreement, he vanished from my sight.
In the center of the tomb chamber hung a massive coffin, its four corners secured tightly against the walls with heavy iron chains.
To enter the tomb chamber from the stone door, one had to cross a long Stone Slab Bridge.
The Stone Slab Bridge was suspended in mid-air, surrounded by oddly shaped Mud Sculptures.
As I gazed at these stone figures, I found myself almost entranced.
Suddenly, Mu Xuanche appeared atop the coffin, waving for me to come over.
Without a second thought, I stepped onto the stone bridge and walked toward him.
Ring, ring, ring...
The stone bridge swayed under the force of gravity, the iron chains above clashing against each other, creating a cacophony of sound.
Swaying back and forth, my head began to spin slightly.
A cold breath rose from beneath my feet, reminiscent of standing in front of an open freezer.
The chill raised the hairs on my legs, creeping upward as it extended through my body.
It was icy cold. I looked down and saw that the mud sculptures in the pit seemed to come to life all at once.
Arms stretched out toward me, and suddenly, I felt a chill around my ankle as a black hand grasped it. I quickly crouched down and used Shiro to sever its grip.
More hands reached out for me, followed by countless others; I couldn't match their speed.
Cackling! Cackling...
The air was filled with triumphant laughter, sharp and piercing, as figures crawled up from the pit and charged toward me.
I kept running forward, using Shiro to cut down anything that obstructed my path.
In the darkness, a large hand grabbed my ankle.
Thud!
I fell to the ground. Not daring to hesitate, I pushed myself backward. The atmosphere was too eerie; I trembled all over with tension.
A strong rotting smell assaulted my senses, and just when I felt I could hold on no longer, the gourd at my waist dropped to the ground.
The treasure saw these evil spirits and was so frightened that it leaped into my arms.
"Godmother, why are there so many strange uncles? We should run; they want to eat us!"
"Can you understand what they are saying?"
I was surprised to discover that spirits could communicate with one another.
"Hurry and tell them not to eat Godmother! Godmother isn't tasty!"
I trembled all over, my words coming out unclear.
With a worried expression, the treasure shouted at me, "Godmother, we can't stay here! Let's run! They're angry and want to eat us!"
I quickly performed a Ghost Suppression Technique, driving back two of the approaching spirits, and then I grabbed the treasure and ran.
Help me...
Mu Xuanche, help me...
My sharp cries echoed throughout the cave.
Bang!
While I was running headlong, I collided with someone.
I thought it was Mu Xuanche who had arrived. Looking up, I was surprised to see a man I didn't recognize.
He was dressed in a robe, towering over me by a whole head.
His features were handsome, with striking eyes that were particularly captivating, clear and bright, exuding a strong sense of charisma.
"Sir, are you a human or a ghost?" I asked, bewildered.
"I am a ghost. How are you still alive?" he replied coldly, implying that he was indeed human.
Encountering a person among a group of ghosts thrilled me, and I rushed forward to give him a hug.
But suddenly, a bronze sword pressed against my neck, halting my movement.
This bronze sword looked familiar; wasn't it just in Shangguan Mingyue's hands?
How did it end up with him? Did he harm Shangguan Mingyue? Anger surged through my mind in an instant.
I drew Shiro and charged at the man, reckless and determined to fight him.
He was caught off guard and nearly got stabbed by me.
But by the time he reacted, I was already no match for him.
"You crazy woman! I saved you, and you still want to kill me?"
The man glared at me with anger, but I held my head high and asked, "What have you done to my friend?"
"Senior Brother, let go of Yan Xi quickly."
Suddenly, I heard Shangguan Mingyue's voice behind me. The man released me, and I turned to face her.
Shangguan Mingyue rushed towards me, "Haha, Yan Xi, I'm so glad you're okay! I was really worried just now."
"Mingyue, what on earth is going on?"
Seeing my confusion, Shangguan Mingyue explained everything to me.
It turned out that after we went missing earlier, she encountered danger. Fortunately, her Senior Brother Li Mubai came to rescue her.
"This is your Senior Brother?"
"Yes! My master only took in three disciples, and this is my Senior Brother Li Mubai. Master predicted we would be in danger, so he sent Senior Brother to save us. Isn't that great?"
I looked up and down at Li Mubai, who was indeed quite handsome, although he exuded a cold aura.
But no matter how I looked at him, he didn't seem like an enlightened master. Shangguan Mingyue leaned closer and whispered in my ear, "Don't provoke my Senior Brother; he has a bad temper and can strike you at any moment."
I was startled and silently withdrew my gaze, afraid to meet Li Mubai's eyes.
"Let's go."
Without even glancing at us, Li Mubai spoke coldly into the air.
"Leave? The graveyard hasn't been resolved yet, how can we leave?"
"You can't interfere with what's happening here. We'll go out, and later I'll seal the hole with talismans. I can guarantee it won't harm anyone, and that will be enough."
Li Mubai explained, then took the lead and walked out.
Remembering that Mu Xuanche was still inside, I shouted ahead, "Wait a moment."
But no one paid attention to me; Shangguan Mingyue dragged me out forcefully.
Bao quietly climbed onto my shoulder and whispered in my ear, "Godmother, Godfather told you to leave first and not worry about him."
With Mu Xuanche's instructions, I felt safe to go out.
At the entrance of the cave, Li Mubai directed me and Shangguan Mingyue to fill the opening with an Iron Shovel.
As I dug into the earth, I cursed this man beside me for not treating women like women.
Yet I didn't dare slow down my movements, swinging the Iron Shovel with all my might.
Once we filled the hole with talismans, Li Mubai performed a ritual at the entrance, burned the talismans, and then left.
"What do we do next?"
Watching Li Mubai's departing figure, I was somewhat dazed; this man was truly strange.
Shangguan Mingyue gave my head a light slap, looking at me as if I were hopeless. "Of course, we go find Li Kui to get some money!"
Li Kui, who had been waiting at the villa, immediately rushed over with a big grin when he saw us return. "Great Masters, how did it go?"
Shangguan Mingyue answered him before I could. "Of course we completed the task. As long as you don't go messing around in that cave, there won't be any problems. Now, about the payment."
Although Li Kui nodded in agreement, a heavy sense of frustration was evident on his face, and I quickly understood why.
I let Shangguan Mingyue leave first and stayed behind alone with Li Kui.
As expected from someone seasoned in the business world, Li Kui maintained his composure as I scrutinized him from head to toe. He calmly asked me, "Gu Daxian, is there something you need?"
"Boss Li, I have a piece of advice for you. I wonder if you would care to hear it."
"I'm all ears."
"Boss Li, wealth is merely an external possession, but life is singular."
With that, I turned to leave. If Li Kui could understand my words, he would know what I meant. I didn't believe he was unaware of the rumors about gold hidden in the tomb.
He had sent us to catch ghosts for more than one reason; if we could help him retrieve the treasures inside, it would benefit him without harm. That was why he had shown reluctance when Shangguan Mingyue mentioned sealing the entrance.
If he were greedy enough to risk his life for wealth and wanted to reopen the cave, then there would be no stopping him.
As I reached the door, Li Kui's voice called out behind me.
"Gu Daxian, rest assured that Li Kui will deliver as promised."
I smiled slightly, my lips curling up. It seemed that Li Kui was indeed a perceptive man.
I hooked my arm around Shangguan Mingyue's shoulder and pulled her outside.
"Yan Xi, where's the money? Did that Li Kui pay up? If not, I’ll go in there and deal with him myself."
"Don't worry, the money is definitely secure. We're all exhausted; don't you want to take a shower and have a good meal?"
"Of course I do! Tonight, I still need to call over a couple of handsome guys to serve me."
In the end, it was Li Kui who sent a car to take us to the hotel. After settling in, we finally had a moment to catch our breath.
The hotel staff were overly polite when they saw that we were accompanied by a driver from the Li Family.
It was then that we learned Li Kui was a bona fide local tycoon, a well-known real estate boss.
"Yan Xi, your Li Kui doesn’t look like an ultra-wealthy big boss at all. He doesn’t have an ounce of arrogance," Shangguan Mingyue said as she lounged on the hotel’s large bed, rolling around comfortably while sighing.
I was surprised to learn that Li Kui was so wealthy. I had thought he had some flair; turns out he was just too rich for such things. When compared to life itself, treasures like that simply didn’t matter.
"Mingyue, you don’t understand. My dad used to say that the more someone knows how to make money, the less temper they have. If you're too full of yourself, even the God of Wealth wouldn’t dare stay by your side—how would you make money then?"
"Yan Xi, your dad makes sense. It may sound rough, but it’s true."
"Of course! Now get some rest; you look exhausted. I'm really tired."
After taking a hot shower, I felt completely relaxed and drowsy.
I went to bed while Shangguan Mingyue decided to go out and find some handsome guys to have fun with, telling me not to disturb her.
I instructed her to close the door properly before I fell asleep.
That night, I slept soundly without any dreams.
It wasn't until the deafening ringing of the phone woke me up.
"Yan Xi, pick up the phone! It's so annoying."
I heard Shangguan Mingyue's grumbling voice beside me, and I felt irritated; I hated being disturbed from my dreams.
I reached for my phone and answered with annoyance, "Hello, who is this?"
"Gu Daxian, there's been an incident..."
