"Calm down, calm down, Commander." Someone began to respond, and it was Xiong Tai who stopped him.
"What are you doing? Aren't you usually the one who acts like this?" Freyr said to him.
"Yes, but right now we need to stay calm, do you understand? Look over there." Xiong Tai shook his head, his face showing deep frustration as he spoke.
He hurriedly glanced to the other side, where two people were hanging at another exit. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was Parker and Barley Key.
"How could this happen? How did they get captured too?" Freyr's eyebrows twitched slightly, cursing under his breath.
The creatures with snake bodies were spitting out nonsense, flailing about aimlessly, but their words were incomprehensible. They quickly raised long knives and some very sharp spears, clearly still stuck in a primitive era.
Although the sculpture of the Serpent God before them displayed powerful technological artifacts, it seemed their civilization had regressed to the point of believing in rumors.
It was clear how terrifying they truly were; they horrifyingly used humans as part of their animal rituals, hoping for favorable weather. It was indeed strange behavior.
"What are we going to do? Just stand here and watch? I can't just sit back and do nothing," Freya cursed inwardly.
If it came to that, it wouldn't be so bad; each of them had their own thoughts. However, through their exchanged glances, they seemed to have made a decision internally.
What did this mean? It likely meant they would continue with force. Suddenly, lights illuminated the area, countless colorful lights gathering around the Serpent God, creating an illusion of being enveloped in a radiant spectrum.
Many Servants immediately knelt down. For the servants beneath the deity, this holy light undoubtedly signified that their worshipped god had awakened.
The god of the sculpture awakening? Their thinking was so backward. Freya felt a surge of joy; they made some noise. Little did they know that such reverence for nature and deities should stem from fear rather than genuine belief.
Thoughts? It was essentially what originated from their hearts—a terrifying thought. If it weren't for their ignorance of this civilization, they might have believed there were many different ideas within it. In reality, this civilization had suffered a catastrophic disaster long ago, and the serpent that saved them from that disaster was the very subject of this sculpture. Its depiction was strikingly realistic; one could imagine that in ancient times, its technological creations far surpassed those of humanity's current world.
That creation was a cellular separator, hatching from a single drop of liquid and then breeding a life form as they imagined it. This new race was created by the remnants of humanity known as the Creator, and they evidently lived together once—playing reeds around campfires—leading to the birth of a civilization.
But Creator had no idea that later on, this civilization would diverge during its evolution. One part remained stagnant, clinging to its original naive ideas, while another part had already moved from the nearby Inner World to the Surface World, establishing the grand Human Empire.
This was what was once referred to as the Five Great Empires. Each of these empires could trace its roots back to the early stages of ancient civilization, often revolving around the creature known as the serpent, leading to deeper portrayals.
Given this fact, there was little emotional weight to consider. If this was indeed humanity's ancestor, it would likely infuriate those Old Guys outside if they caught wind of it.
He cut off the current video and continued to use virtual imagery to blur his perception of the Serpent People. He knew that those who were aware of the false glories radiating from this scene held a glimmer of hope for survival in their eyes.
The Serpent People were terrified. With a roar that echoed like a powerful current unleashed by lightning, reminiscent of Thor's thunder splitting through objects, they began to flee in all directions, disregarding their dignity. They even abandoned their servants, their expressions reflecting sheer panic.
Those bound like livestock hurriedly twisted their bodies, their mouths stuffed with large figs, creating a comical sight.
Seeing that the Serpent People had all fled, Freyr and his companions cautiously poked their heads out and jumped back down to the ground. They pulled out knives and began cutting the ropes binding the limbs of those captured.
"You have two minutes. Get dressed; we need to move," Freyr said as he approached, pulling out several garments from his ring and tossing them onto the ground as if addressing them.
The stunned individuals scrambled to pick up the clothes scattered on the ground and hurriedly began putting them on.
Before long, a few of them were fully equipped and stood up, quickly darting outside.
They retraced their steps without encountering any further trouble; those ghastly creatures seemed utterly terrified and had fled. They returned to where they had been suspended by ropes and gradually crawled out of that disgusting hole.
"I really want to burn this place down; how dare they treat us like cattle!" Ross cursed.
“Mackey, how did you all end up in that trap?” Freyr asked, puzzled.
“It’s a long story. We arrived here and thought the crosses looked interesting. Then some local natives appeared. You see, we didn’t have much food on us at the time, so they offered us a meal. Little did we know, they had spiked our food with a sedative. We didn’t notice it at first; if we hadn’t been so hungry, it might have been different. Once we realized we had eaten too much, we couldn’t muster any strength. That’s when we knew something was wrong, but by then it was too late. They put bags over our heads, and when we woke up, we found Ross tied to us. Thankfully, they didn’t do anything too gruesome to us,” Mackey lamented, slapping his thigh in regret over the harshness of the world where even a meal could be a trap.
The others listened with a mix of amusement and disbelief. After asking Ross about his experience, they found his thoughts were similar. He had only noticed the backpack on the ground before he felt a heavy blow from behind and lost consciousness.
“Uh, okay, just be careful next time. A wise rabbit doesn’t eat food offered for free—even if it looks delicious,” Freyr advised after thinking for a moment. He circled around the nearby tents and concluded, “There’s nothing useful here; let’s burn this place down.”
With anger simmering inside him, he took action. They tossed flammable liquids and explosives into the holes before retreating to detonate the remaining explosives with the last remote device.
A scorching fireball erupted from the ground, its flames resembling a blazing lotus that scorched everything in its path. Even from a distance, they could feel the intense heat radiating towards them, making the ground unbearably hot.
Amidst the chaos, they even heard piercing screams—likely from those creatures trapped before them. Although they meant no offense from their perspective, any adventurers caught in the future would not be as fortunate as they were. How much damage this fire would cause was left to fate.
Continuing westward, their group was still scattered; they might have been separated upon entering this place.
Asking Mackey and Parker about the others proved useless since neither had seen where anyone else had gone. The six-member team pressed on with a shared hope that they would eventually reunite outside.
Their motivation to move forward remained strong as they traversed through terrifying mountains and dark swamps, followed by an eerily strange stone path echoing with unsettling sounds.
“What are those noises?” No one could identify them clearly; they sounded bizarre and unsettling. Yet someone immediately recognized that one of the sounds resembled their loved ones’ voices.
“Uh, it sounds a bit like my deceased mother,” Mackey said gloomily.
“Different for me; it’s my grandmother’s voice,” Parker added with a sense of understanding.
“Stay focused everyone; we’ve likely entered what’s known as the Gate of Life and Death. Those who turn back once inside will be turned to stone. While I can’t say for certain if there are other voices here, remember that our families are waiting for us back home on the surface. Don’t let this illusion deceive you,” Freyr warned.
“Commander, what does the power book say?”
“There’s nothing particularly terrifying in the book, but it warns you not to look back. If you do, you might see something that will haunt you for the rest of your life. There are truly frightening things, as well as things that will make you deeply regret looking. That’s what the book says, but I don’t quite understand what it really means,” Freyr explained, making it clear that regardless of what they heard, they should not turn around.
“How long do you think this situation will last?” someone gestured.
Freyr was startled; the voice he had just heard sounded strange, which sparked a peculiar thought in his mind. “It might last for over ten kilometers.” The voice compelled him to look back, but Freyr resisted his curiosity and kept moving forward.
Others also found it odd. Just as someone was about to turn around to take a look, someone behind him kicked him and shouted in a familiar voice, “Are you trying to get yourself killed? Don’t look back, keep walking, and don’t stop.” The speaker had a raspy voice, which made a few people chuckle.
“Alright, alright, let’s move on,” Freyr said.
The others nodded slightly and continued walking in silence. After a while, they indeed began to notice some issues. There were only a few people talking, yet there were constant murmurs around them and some very annoying nicknames being thrown about.
Freyr was puzzled by what these things were trying to do. His temper was relatively good; he didn’t let these matters distract him and walked along while cursing under his breath. Xiong Tai, however, was less restrained and vented his frustrations loudly.
“What are you doing? The more you ignore them, the more they come at you. I’ve realized something: when I turn my heart into Void, the disturbances from the voices increase. In short, this place might reflect our inner thoughts. We should try to run quickly,” Freyr suggested.
However, turning one’s entire heart into Void was a challenging task. Maintaining that state while running at high speed was absolutely impossible; prolonged movement would only reveal more terrifying scenarios.
Yet with their physical fitness, running a few kilometers at speed was still manageable. Moreover, their minds had undergone special training; they were likely already accustomed to such impacts.
Could forging the mind really allow one to ignore this kind of attack?
Perhaps so; it seemed that way. A group of them began to run forward swiftly, appearing very capable.
Indeed, once they fully immersed themselves in the Void state, the pressure in their hearts quickly dissipated.
In such circumstances, everyone faced numerous situations, and from the perspective of others, each person had their own thoughts. The effectiveness of these thoughts was indeed significant.
The drive to move forward continued, with everyone's ideas merging into the Void Realm.
As they progressed, many situations still arose. However, enduring this must have been painful. They needed to maintain their physical and mental states at a normal level. It was simple to say but much more troublesome to execute. Their physical condition was being maintained at an extraordinary level, while their low spirits directly affected their control over their bodies.
They continued to move under this control, several individuals pressing onward, and others nearby began to have their own thoughts upon witnessing this.
As they advanced westward, their pace slowed considerably. After traveling four or five kilometers, they immediately felt that the shrill sound in their ears had become sharper.
The state of emptiness within them stirred other thoughts in their minds.
At this point, it seemed that some others were finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the void within. "How are you all doing? Is everything alright?"
"Damn it, I'm a bit tired... Cough cough cough!!"
Thinking this way, it was evident that the others looked quite fatigued.
Fatigue was expected. With this in mind, they gradually slowed their footsteps, and the sound of "Damn it" echoed once more.
