In other words, on the other side of the situation, Freyr was clearly still unaware of what had happened to the others, but it was evident that they were facing problems here as well.
A massive pit had appeared at the intersection before them, bubbling with a hint of water that rose and fell slowly. The water left behind a deep sense of helplessness, making it seem unrealistic to cross over. The bubbles rising from the liquid suggested that it was Mercury.
This soft metallic substance, when it reached a certain height, produced Deadly Poison that indeed altered the atmosphere here. Snakes, insects, and even large predatory animals found it difficult to remain unaffected, let alone the human beings who ventured into this area.
"This is Mercury; the smell we detected earlier is definitely from Mercury. How did this scent become so fragrant? This is bad; put on the Oxygen Mask quickly." At that moment, Freyr felt he was still a step behind. The odor seeped in, and he felt his head starting to spin under its influence.
This sense of helplessness was clearly a sign of heavy metal poisoning, particularly from Mercury. Realizing the severity of the situation, Freyr quickly bit down on a capsule hidden in his wisdom tooth. A liquid surged down his throat, effectively alleviating the effects of the toxin.
"Get a grip! Stay focused!"
Freyr quickly regained his composure. This situation wasn't entirely unexpected; it was quite unique. He leaned against the wall for support and moved cautiously toward Ross, who was struggling for breath. Freyr slowly maneuvered his mouth to feed Ross the antidote, adjusting the situation to its best possible state.
The purple toxin on Ross's face began to recede gradually. When he opened his eyes again, he saw Freyr in front of him. Ross struggled momentarily before activating the fresh function of his Oxygen Mask, which continuously weakened the toxicity of Mercury. Although some of the poison still mixed with the air and seeped in, with each breath, its effects became less pronounced.
Even under these circumstances, continued exposure would lead to unusual reactions in their bodies. However, given their unique physical constitutions compared to ordinary humans and their resistance developed through the antidote, both men exhibited significant differences from others.
Despite this, even with assistance from one another, their thoughts diverged greatly as they faced ongoing threats.
The two men steadied themselves and paced beside the giant pit for a moment, testing whether they could jump across it.
In the end, Freyr halted at the edge. Ross continued, "Let's see if you can jump over from here; if you can do it, I can too." With that, he gestured to measure the distance to the other side. It was a bold idea; if anything went wrong and he fell into the pit, this Mercury Zone could very well become his grave.
In this Mercury Zone, he would die in a gruesome manner, and for the next few thousand years, his body would remain uncorrupted, preserved as if he had just died, encased in ice. Every struggle leading up to his death would be recorded by Mercury.
"If I take a running start, it should work, but the feeling of this Mercury toxin is still too strange for me. Most of my body has been weakened by the poison. If I run over in this condition, I might just make it to the other side." The man paused. They stopped to look around; the idea was good, but there was no absolute certainty. In the end, even Freyr, standing at the edge, shook his head and said despondently, "But if I jump directly from here, there's a high chance I'll fall. This toxin affects my condition. Most of it has been neutralized by the antidote, but some still impacts my neural pathways, infiltrating and destroying my nerve centers along the way."
"Then if you're harmed by it, it must be aggressive towards me as well. What should we do?" Ross continued from the other side.
"Forget it; just come onto my back," Freyr said.
Unexpectedly, the situation shifted dramatically as he suggested that Ross ride on him. It was quite surprising; how was he supposed to mount? Should he leap onto his back or sit down slowly?
However, it didn't change much. Freyr slowly crouched down while Ross quickly climbed onto his shoulders. Below him stood like a proud steed, a wild and spirited horse.
With this noble steed beneath him, perhaps any hardship could be overcome. But while the one below was a fine horse, the one above was not necessarily a skilled rider; he was merely a burden and an injured person without Freyna's capabilities or her strength to traverse difficulties.
"I need a long running start; I'm going to step back now." The man immediately stated as he began to slowly retreat.
After creating a significant distance, he finally stopped and spoke to the person on his back in a low voice, "Okay, I'm starting my run now. Remember to hold on tight and don’t let go." The other nodded in agreement.
With a running start of nearly a hundred meters, the momentum built up gradually over a considerable distance.
His strength reached its peak as he prepared to launch himself forward. Then with a flip, his feet left the ground entirely; moments later, he landed on the other side.
It was so close—just two steps away from falling into the pit of Mercury behind him. Just that little bit more would have sent him plummeting into its depths.
Without further thought, Freyr quickly crouched down again. "Get down," he said, his voice carrying a hint of coldness. What was going on here?
Ross didn't dare to think too much either and immediately shifted his position, climbing down without hesitation.
Once they steadied themselves, they turned back to look. Below them, Mercury was still bubbling. A stone slipped and fell into the liquid, instantly swallowed up without leaving a trace.
Thinking of this made a bead of cold sweat form on their foreheads. Such a situation was indeed unsettling. "We should hurry and leave," Freyr said to Ross, who nodded slightly in agreement, showing no signs of resistance.
In this situation, there was no room for reckless thoughts; this place was far from safe. After some discussion, the two continued their advance.
Gradually, the discomfort in their bodies began to fade, and the toxic air around them dissipated little by little. The toxic Mercury Zone truly resembled the Toxic Domain described in their strategy guide, with many having perished within its depths.
As they pressed forward, they arrived at a distinctly different location.
Beneath their feet lay a floating array of stones suspended in mid-air, some of which were shifting and moving as if alive.
