If this outcome was not entirely unexpected, the association had only categorized the Buck Bugs as beneficial insects due to their contributions to humanity. The existence of Mithril, a rare metal, likely played a role in this classification. Even though half of the town had been overrun by Buck Bugs, they had not deployed a large military force to eradicate them.
Mithril was exceedingly rare on Earth; the fact that a living organism could secrete it was nothing short of miraculous. Because of the scarcity of ordinary metals, humanity had even considered targeting Buck Bugs for farming, hoping to create a steady supply of Mithril. However, that was a separate issue altogether. Clearly, a single farm would not suffice if such vast quantities of Mithril were needed.
Moreover, Buck Bugs were still insects, and their aggression would be relentless if their territory or offspring were threatened. This inherent flaw in their existence had deterred humanity from implementing their initial plans.
The primary concern was the fear of exterminating the Buck Bugs and thereby creating an extremely hostile ecological environment. Such a situation would complicate matters further. Although Mithril was scarce, restoring the natural environment to its original state would not be simple; it would likely take nearly a thousand years of prosperity and revival to achieve that.
Alternatively, humanity simply did not have the time or resources to focus on these issues. However, the global landscape had changed significantly. Tropical rainforests and larger areas of Primitive Jungle were indeed expanding as green territories, with vegetation slowly regaining vitality without human interference. Some primitive ancient plants and Ancient Creatures were also beginning to emerge.
This upheaval had surpassed humanity's control, leading to a truly calamitous situation. The voice command from Alpha continued, followed by other sounds. Once Alpha stabilized, a sound resembling a roaring motor echoed from across the way.
"I've sent the coordinates to your email," Freyr continued.
"Understood," Alpha replied.
Then others turned around and saw clouds of dust rolling toward them. The sight of those white clouds was terrifying; without massive numbers, it was impossible to generate such an overwhelming presence. Moreover, their speed reached an alarming level.
"Lay down explosives to block them! Throw them now!" Freyr shouted.
"Oh right! Let's all pitch in," Xiong Tai added.
Several people surged forward, but before long, Freyr was the first to shout again, signaling those below to quickly start planting landmines. The destructive power of Nuclear Landmines was indeed astonishing; even if they couldn't kill the Buck Bugs outright, they could certainly hinder their advance.
With that in mind, the group worked together to finish the task, which was indeed a troublesome job. The others quickly became a chaotic mass, dragging out a massive fuse that was not just a single line but rather tangled into a web-like structure. If one end got ensnared, it would instantly trigger a violent explosion.
Moreover, the designer of this setup was none other than Duan Shuai himself, who had won design awards in the military. Now was the perfect opportunity for his skills to shine. After completing the minefield, they noticed that the Buck Bugs had already reached the nearby edge, about two or three hundred meters away from them.
For the bugs, that distance was not particularly long, but for humans, it felt like a death sentence. They dared not conserve their strength and sprinted forward with Ultimate speed. At least this way, they could buy some time; even if they couldn't make it, they needed to escape the range of the Nuclear Landmine as quickly as possible.
The explosive force could severely injure them all, and it wasn't an impossible outcome. However, the Buck Bugs lacked intelligence and had no idea that a trap awaited them ahead.
If time had allowed, they would have set up more traps for the Buck Bugs, but those creatures were astonishingly fast, leaving no time to prepare a second trap. The others were being chased by these bugs and running for their lives; it was utterly humiliating. But at such a moment, who cared about pride or dignity? The sheer pressure from the Buck Bugs' aggression could crush anyone.
Before long, explosions erupted behind them in rapid succession, followed by a deafening roar. A fierce sea of flames engulfed the area, accompanied by a series of explosive sounds that echoed through the air. The heat surged behind them as that place turned to ashes.
No one knew how many Buck Bugs perished on the spot, but who dared to stop and look back? No one was paying attention to what was happening there; many would only be curious about the outcome and end up regretting it.
The tremendous roar surged again as footsteps drew closer.
“Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!!!” someone shouted three times in frustration.
“Can anyone tell me what's going on? Are those bugs immortal?” another person asked.
“They're not immortal; at night, these bugs are made of Mithril and are impervious to blades and bullets. The explosions should have killed them, but unfortunately, there are just too many of them,” Freyr replied as he led the charge at the front.
Others naturally found it hard to believe this claim, yet the reality was just as he described. The mines had all been set off, but those creatures were indeed terrified of fire. The fuel on the ground seemed capable of hindering them for a while. However, who would have thought that after running two or three hundred meters, the sounds behind them grew even louder?
“Commander, where did you park the car? We're all about to drop dead.” Of course, they weren't really exhausted; their nerves were just on edge. Who could know that their physical abilities had been tested to be far superior to those of ordinary people? They were a special breed, enhanced in capability. Even if that swarm of bugs came charging at them, it wouldn’t necessarily mean they would be outmatched.
It was just that the sheer pressure had frightened them. It was nighttime, and the Defense Power of Buck Bug, with its Mithril body, had been pushed to the limit. Those who dared to challenge it at this moment were surely some cunning troublemakers. If anyone really turned back, Freyr would not stop them; instead, he would watch them leave with a friendly gaze and say something like, “Take care, and if you survive, come back to find us.”
Unfortunately, everyone in his team, including himself, was a coward at heart, running faster than anyone else. Freyr pondered his earlier thoughts and replied calmly, “Not far now; it’s just ahead. We still have a thousand meters to go, so let’s hurry. The Buck Bugs are faster than us. However, I still need to make some other preparations.”
