Thinking of this, they immediately headed westward. Their search for a suitable location was not random; they stealthily followed the trail of some Buck Bugs, curious to see where they would lead.
Clearly, this task would take considerable time to complete. Fortunately, persistence paid off. After spending the entire day scouting, they finally discovered a relatively hidden spot in the late hours of the night—it was the nest of the Buck Bugs.
The nest was located in the mountains, featuring an incubation area crafted from dead wood. It looked truly repulsive. The active eggs glowed like crystals emitting a Purple Light, radiating an eye-catching aura. Were these really bugs? Before hatching, the Buck Bugs resembled something out of a science fiction movie, almost alien in appearance—there were indeed some similarities.
They cautiously navigated the terrain and found that a large amount of diesel and explosive powder had been spilled around the eggs. They needed to install detonators along their path. As they ventured deeper into the nest, they discovered that the remaining Buck Bugs were sleeping inside. Unlike mammals that stay close to their young, these creatures were simply left there, and even the caretaker Buck Bugs had become mere decorations, sleeping soundly despite the strong smell of explosives permeating the air.
"There are so many bugs here; we should get out quickly," Ross said as he glanced around, stepping back in confusion.
"Yeah, wait a moment; I'm observing," Freyr replied.
"What’s there to see? It looks just like this," Xiong Tai grumbled.
"Shh, enough. Let’s head out," Freyr suddenly declared his intention to stop and then led everyone away from the nest.
"Let’s activate the explosives directly. Once we’re at a safe distance, we can detonate them," someone suggested. There was no easier way to handle this situation. Their demeanor had remained calm since entering the nest; their footsteps were light, making them seem like ghosts slipping in unnoticed.
This made their actions feel almost too easy; they encountered no resistance at all during their infiltration. Although Buck Bugs were indeed non-aggressive creatures, their alertness seemed alarmingly low. Could they really sleep so soundly? Despite feeling somewhat uneasy about it, once everyone exited the cave and looked back, it remained eerily silent inside.
"Should we detonate once we’re a bit farther away?" This raised questions—didn’t Buck Bugs fear ambushes from enemies? Wasn’t that a bit paranoid? But then again, what did it matter to them? A smooth entry and exit should be considered fortunate. After distancing themselves for a while, Relock's Alarm suddenly went off in his hand.
A surge of intense flames erupted behind them, and the cave, which appeared so sturdy, proved to be surprisingly fragile. The roar of destruction echoed like a devastating explosion.
The heat wave surged forward, causing those in the distance to stumble and fall.
Everyone dove forward, realizing that they had used far too many explosives. Even though they had traveled some distance, the blast still reached them, and as they gazed at the terrifying flames, their hearts raced with excitement.
One mission had been accomplished. However, despite having initially planned to use gas to incapacitate their target before making further plans, they ultimately decided to resolve the issue with explosives to eliminate the Buck Bugs in the area. Just as they were about to celebrate, a sudden commotion arose behind them.
At first glance, it seemed like there was no cause for concern, but by the time they reacted, it was already too late. Something was approaching them—an astonishing number of creatures—and there was a sense of being outmaneuvered.
"Something is getting closer; I don't know what it is, but it could be something deadly," Nosty suddenly spoke up. His mental sensitivity surpassed that of ordinary people; he was responsible for nearly all the scanning tasks within the team. Possessing an innate ability for reconnaissance, he felt no fatigue. However, when his mental power reached its ultimate level, his skin would take on a faint bluish hue—a color that held no clear meaning but indicated a capability within the realm of mental energy. Many scientists struggled to explain this effect on life energy, and the mental domain remained an enigmatic field.
In that moment, Nosty's voice silenced all the noise around them.
"They're really coming, and there are indeed a lot of them. Those are Buck Bugs! Damn it! Fire alone won't kill them; why is this happening?" More people found themselves puzzled by this revelation. Someone shouted first, "What are we standing around for? Those things are about to catch up with us! Are we just going to wait here for them to overtake us?" This outburst jolted the others back to reality.
The sound of running feet suddenly filled the air as everyone adjusted their direction and continued forward. Freyr pulled out a remote control from his pocket—it was a voice-activated remote for their vehicle. He swiped across the virtual screen a couple of times, and a dark blue glow emanated from it. Then he shouted into it urgently, "Alright, Alpha, bring the vehicle over here. I'll set the target point; you warm it up! Once we arrive, we can take off immediately. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Freyr. Should I also warm up the Gatling Gun for you?" Alpha's voice responded.
"Good idea! How did I not think of that? Warm it up; after all, we're in a desperate situation and can't just leave without resolving this matter," Freyr replied. "Prepare the Gatling Gun as well. Also, get in touch with headquarters about what's happening here. Once we establish contact, we can retreat safely. If headquarters can't handle it, we'll have to deal with these Buck Bugs ourselves. Let headquarters know that if they want the bodies, they'll have to come collect them themselves—we'll make sure there's nothing left of them."
If the association had wanted to eliminate the Buck Bugs sooner, they wouldn't have needed such elaborate measures. They could have easily collaborated with the military to send troops into their territory and simply opened fire—the Buck Bug species would surely face extinction. The main reason these creatures continued to thrive was likely due to their ability to produce Mithril in abundance.
