This operation was going much more smoothly than expected. Splitting into two teams had proven to be a wise decision. However, at that moment, a sudden explosion echoed from a distance.
The powerful blast was the result of a Nuclear Landmine detonating. To alert those nearby about the situation, the mine had been filled with signal dyes, and the red gas was not fire but smoke produced by those signals. This indicated that their other team was in trouble.
As they quickly approached the area, the sound of gunfire intensified. The number of mines previously laid was considerable, but after so many explosions, it was uncertain if even half remained. If that were the case, the weapons in their hands would not be enough to annihilate so many insects.
These insects seemed to be charging recklessly forward, and they had never encountered such a swarm before. Now it made sense. With this thought in mind, Freyr urged those around him even more. Their speed had already been fast, but under his encouragement, they surged forward at an even greater pace.
Such speed could easily lead to fatigue, but Freyr did not care about that. As long as they reached their comrades quickly, nothing else mattered—even if it meant dying side by side in battle. He could not let his companions suffer because of his poor decisions.
Fortunately, the situation was not as complicated as he had imagined. They dashed forward, maneuvering around the craters created by the Nuclear Landmine explosions. Instinctively glancing around, he noticed that the area was filled with creatures resembling Kappa—strange beings with peculiar flippers that looked like ducks.
It was truly unexpected to find such monsters in this jungle. Moreover, these did not seem to belong to the Zerg; they were some new and bizarre species. The world had become increasingly chaotic lately, with too many unknown creatures emerging—first the Burrowers and now these Kappa-like monsters. As they observed the craters, they witnessed a dying Kappa liquefy upon death, turning into a puddle of water.
These terrifying Kappa could actually transform into water! Meanwhile, not far away, he saw that some Kappa had approached a vehicle where Duan Shuai was unleashing firepower using the Demon Commander Version of the Devastator, continuously spraying bullets at them. Clearly, these Kappa had an affinity for water.
Most physical damage seemed ineffective against them; only Ross's Sunshooting Bow could inflict harm. Ordinary arrows carried strange spells that sent those Kappa flying when struck.
The lethality appeared quite impressive; those severely injured Kappa turned into puddles upon death. However, others who were unaware of what was happening might mistakenly think these Kappa were playing tricks.
Although those already dead were no longer a threat, their attacks still managed to delay others from joining the fray.
Suddenly, the firepower intensified as Kappa clustered around the vehicle. Relock had brought enchanted Alchemical Bullets this time; these bullets were meant as backups and might come in handy at any moment.
Moreover, it was quite rare, costing 10 Reward Points each, and they had barely managed to acquire more than fifty of them. Unfortunately, the bullets had lost their effectiveness due to being tainted by the dirt of the mortal world; using one meant losing one.
Being attacked by such a Kappa was truly unexpected. The suppressive fire played a decisive role, and the devastating strike turned out to be a mere false alarm for everyone present. The people there only suffered minor injuries. The Kappa's water was incredibly sticky, and it seemed to target their eyes directly. It was baffling how that substance could cling to them, leaving their vision blurred in an instant.
"Wash your eyes and see if there's anything else we need to deal with," Freyr urged as he hurried over. Ross seemed to be in relatively good condition; his eyes were well protected. The worst off was Parker, who had been ambushed. After being dragged back, it seemed he had lost his aim entirely, rendering him unable to shoot accurately. Otherwise, he would never have allowed the enemy to breach their position like this. If they had arrived even a moment later, Ross might have had to rely on Alpha's hovering function to buy them some time.
Although that would likely have been futile, at least they knew that these creatures wouldn't fly up to attack them. So hovering four or five meters high would be a safe zone. Thankfully, they were back now; everyone else had merely panicked. After Clear Water washed away the sticky liquid from his retina, Parker's vision gradually returned to clarity.
"That was really frightening; that slime was like glue—stickier than glue! It felt terrible when it got into my eyes. I definitely need to visit a hospital for a thorough check-up," Parker exclaimed after using the last bottle of Clear Water in his possession, his voice tinged with frustration.
"Even ordinary missions can't afford any negligence," Freyr remarked as he stepped forward, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Yeah, where are we heading for our next mission? I really don't want to stay in this cursed place any longer," Duan Shuai grumbled. The Destroyer had just consumed a significant amount of water for cooling down, and nearly a quarter of their ammunition reserves had been depleted—such losses were truly taxing.
It seemed this world was still vast. After they had dealt with the Kappa nearby, footsteps echoed from the jungle again—a rustling sound that confirmed their fears: another figure emerged from the underbrush, still of the same Kappa type but now its color had changed to purple.
"This is bad; a whole new batch of Kappa is coming! Get in the vehicle!" Nosty shouted angrily, his voice suddenly loud as he sensed an intense hostility emanating from the purple Kappa.
The others hurried into the vehicle and activated its hovering function. The engine suddenly vibrated violently, producing a loud screeching sound as one of the Kappa reached beneath them and grabbed hold of a tire. "Damn it! Shake it off!" Freyr cursed loudly as he slammed on the accelerator. The tires spun violently, forcing the Kappa to release its grip.
The intense assault continued as a bullet pierced through the Kappa's head—a standard bullet. Duan Shuai threw out his Death Scythe and fired directly at its head.
It turned out that this Purple Kappa could indeed be harmed physically; it collapsed onto the ground, its body releasing purple liquid that dissolved the surrounding dirt.
