Across from him, Froth seemed to have responded first, looking quite cheerful.
He was currently thriving back in his hometown. Freyr recalled that he once had a sidekick named Aeros. One was born a hunter, while the other was a local tycoon. They relied on each other, amassing wealth through land and resources, so serving in the military was merely a way to pass the time and hone their willpower, preparing to inherit their family businesses.
After chatting with Froth for a while, it appeared that life was treating them well. Freyr wanted to know what profession they were currently engaged in. Froth mentioned that he was working at a factory.
Upon hearing this, Froth boasted about how his family business needed talents like him and offered him a chance to join. Freyr understood that they seemed to be doing well enough now, no longer needing to live on the edge of danger. Perhaps this was indeed a great new beginning for them, and it might be best to let go of those troublesome Stink Bugs instead of risking their lives for them.
After chatting for a bit longer, Freyr decided to end the conversation, feeling there was no point in continuing.
Next, he dialed another number, keeping the name in mind—Duan Shuai. Just from the name alone, he sounded like a reliable man. Their two teams had worked closely together before and had even taken down an armed group. The rapport they had built would mean they wouldn’t need to start from scratch as companions.
The camaraderie was already established; this was what one might call immediate combat readiness. Given a gun, he would be more capable than an average person.
Those who walked out of the Barracks tended to have stronger mental fortitude and willpower. This was part of Freyr's plan; it wasn’t that he looked down on those selected from various places. Some might have been lured by high rewards but had never seen a battlefield or even touched a firearm. Even if some became hunters in the future, they merely held the title without proper team support.
Among these individuals, some later found ways to form personal teams and became Commanders, recruiting imagined capable subordinates. However, because of this, many met their demise during missions—not that anyone should ask how this happened; it mainly stemmed from their lack of experience and guidance from veterans.
However, the veterans in the association didn’t offer guidance just for the sake of it; some were even more ruthless than venomous snakes. If they could consider using mission rewards as prizes, then that would be fine.
While their ideas were indeed commendable, there were other considerations at play. They didn’t expect these newcomers to learn everything all at once; besides, mission rewards seemed too meager. These seasoned members often concealed their skills, and only after several stumbles would these novices finally be ready for action.
But by the time they were ready, they wouldn’t easily rely on their friends; it would be challenging to trust others with their backs. The seasoned members could hardly guarantee mutual support on the battlefield without distractions. There were underlying tensions among them that made true integration difficult—leading to minor team losses or even total annihilation. Such vicious cycles hinted at troubling signs within the association.
The most terrifying thing in the world is not death or the ugly transactions of life, but the malicious hearts of people. These hearts are far more frightening than any battle between ghosts and gods.
This was indeed the case. However, Duan Shuai soon received a response, and he was currently in a dire situation. Although he had become a citizen, he remained at the bottom of society, scraping by on a meager living allowance that barely qualified as support. He was often forced to sell his physical labor, as he could not think of any other way to survive.
Though he appeared to be quite handsome and could have resorted to selling his looks, he firmly believed he was not cut out for such things. Instead, he worked at a construction site, carrying heavy loads and engaging in strenuous physical labor. Aside from the psychological burden weighing heavily on him, everything else was manageable. He worried about whether there would be anyone willing to hire him for manual labor, and his earnings were just enough to cover rent and meals. It was astonishing that someone could endure such a life.
Today happened to be Duan Shuai's day off, so he quickly replied to messages, including those regarding his experiences over the years. His skills had not diminished; he still found time for Recovery Training during his breaks. He was nearly back to his peak condition from his military days, with his foundation intact, suggesting that he could recover fully.
He learned about Freyr's experiences over the years through messages and was eager to accept an invitation to return to the association for recruitment work.
The association indeed held recruitment assessments every year. However, for Duan Shuai to join the team, he would have to wait three months until the next assessment day. After all, it was only late June, and a new mission was about to be executed. Carrying out missions without enough personnel would place an enormous burden on everyone involved.
Once the personnel were gathered, there should be no issues with the mission itself. Fortunately, Duan Shuai had been an excellent marksman in the past.
He could use the equipment that had been eliminated from service for his own purposes. On his end, everything seemed fine; it would take at least half a month before he could report back to the association.
It seemed necessary for him to complete his current tasks first. However, it appeared that his work could not proceed without him; it was quite troublesome. If he wanted others to stay behind, they might not feel obligated to do so. Yet once he sought replacements, they would not give him a chance to leave and would even try their best to keep him around just to exhaust him—after all, old faces must go for new ones to come.
The construction site where Duan Shuai worked employed such tactics.
"This Duan Shuai seems like he'll only be available after fifteen days. I'll draft an application report for him now so that when the time comes, he won't have trouble getting in. I hope he can meet the standards; I believe being at least at the minimum level shouldn't be a problem given his experience and proactive attitude," Freyr nodded in agreement. The only downside was that he'd have to wait fifteen days before returning to the Hunter Association.
"Well, it's great that he's coming! Commander, this person of yours should really be capable, right? We still have one spot left; Commander, can we find someone else?" Xiong Tai asked bluntly from the side.
He seemed more anxious than anyone else, and although it didn't appear to have any direct connection to him, his worry was somewhat for the future of the team. The configuration was complete, but there was a lack of personnel, which significantly affected the morale of the team members.
