They ascended the Tower, and there was no one left behind. The elite members of the Hunter Team from the morning were present, but there were only six of them, all showing signs of exhaustion.
The two Commanders exchanged glances. Meng Luo had shown some affection towards one of them, but Freyr remained cold and distant. Only a few knew he was married, while most assumed that a young man like him, accomplished at such an age, was simply unmarried.
"Everyone, let's put in our best effort today and stand alongside the Number 4 Hunter Team. Does everyone have confidence? The wind will be strong tonight, and it will be even more dangerous. One Hunter Team might not be enough," Meng Luo suddenly spoke up.
Many were taken aback by Meng Luo's astonishing attitude. The other members behind her were puzzled by her intentions, but some understood what was happening; they could tell that Meng Luo had developed feelings for the man in front of her.
Such a manly figure was likely to attract any woman’s interest. However, they themselves were also part of the Patrol and had suffered significant fatigue. Some might already be exhausted; their only rest time was during meals, which barely allowed them to recover. Most of the time was spent honing their Ultimate observational skills, keeping a vigilant eye on their surroundings, missing not even the slightest movement.
For these inexperienced individuals, their ability to assist the association was limited. If war truly came, those elite members who had already exhausted their strength from standing guard would need to rely on these unknown potentials as cannon fodder to preserve the strength of the Pillars of the Community.
Although the association generally disallowed such practices, if a Cosmic Bug War truly emerged, it would necessitate that weaker individuals make sacrifices to ensure combat effectiveness. This was part of strategy; after all, strategies are human inventions that require careful consideration of pros and cons based on circumstances.
However, excessively exhausting these inexperienced individuals could jeopardize the future of the association. It is known that developing a portion of hunters' abilities is quite challenging—selecting suitable candidates from thousands and then identifying potential among the elite is crucial for the association's future.
"Let your subordinates go back to rest. We can handle things here; your team is already severely depleted, and some are exhausted. Do you want your subordinates to die? This is unbelievable; take your Commander back," Freyr replied curtly after surveying the surroundings.
The people in the Tower were shocked by his words. Given the current situation, it was far from safe. Meng Luo's intentions were clear to some, while others pretended not to understand. One individual leered awkwardly; this was his first opportunity to be so close to Meng Luo, standing right beside her. The prospect of patrolling together at night felt like a dream come true.
Yet it was evident that such goodwill should not be accepted because each person had obligations to fulfill within designated time frames during missions. It wasn't as simple as it seemed; after all, a group operating as a unit had already reached its Ultimate endurance limit. Exceeding this time would shift exhaustion from physical stamina to life force.
Eventually, this would lead to a decline in lifespan.
Even if it was someone else's team, they could not simply compromise when faced with such a situation.
Their lives were intertwined, connected by a shared bond. If there was a chance to live, why would anyone choose to die? This obvious reasoning was clearly contrary to common sense. If someone insisted on dying, there was no way to stop them; that was a simple truth.
However, at this point, it became meaningless. As they continued forward, they discovered that the situation ahead was even more complicated than they had imagined. Because of this complexity, they had to make appropriate choices to avoid further casualties in the battle and minimize the number of people drawn into the conflict.
Freyr had an urgent desire to save others and maintained a broad perspective. He wanted to protect everyone and ensure fairness and justice. However, ensuring fairness and justice in war was an approach that seemed utterly unexpected.
It was nearly an impossible task, yet he wanted to give it a try. Therefore, his surprising decision was to let them leave. If it meant fewer deaths, then the team led by Meng Luo would be doomed if they entered; their equipment was simply too poor, and they lacked the mindset for direct combat. They were not called "newbies" for nothing.
Although their team levels were similar, the differences in strength were easily noticeable. In this team, only Meng Luo had seen the world, which clearly wasn't enough. Moreover, her confidence likely stemmed from having completed only a few minor missions. Facing a large-scale operation like the Cosmic Bug War with such confidence would lead to harsh reality checks.
Staying behind would mean certain death. The fourth team might not be particularly impressive, but under such high-intensity equipment leadership, there remained a slim chance of breaking through. Perhaps their team could have upgraded long ago; however, Freyr had not considered that yet because he didn't want his team members to adapt to stronger missions before they were ready. The varying strengths among team members made adaptation difficult.
In a high-pressure mission environment combined with a tense atmosphere, team members with fragile hearts could find themselves facing death in an instant.
"What's wrong? Don't you need help from others? I have high hopes for you all; how about I stay and assist?" Meng Luo said with a smile. But when she looked up, she found herself staring into a pale face. This eerie expression wasn't easy to feign; there was a cold glint of determination in those eyes, and the lips were tightly pressed together as if struggling to release some words from a suppressed throat.
"Our matters are none of your concern. It's unsafe here at night; if you insist on staying, dying in danger is your own business—it has nothing to do with us. Besides, your condition has deteriorated too much to be of any help to us. Just like that, you think you can assist us? Your team hasn't reached the necessary level of adaptability; any random mission could wipe you out. It's better if you reconsider," Freyr replied calmly while suppressing his emotions.
"What do you mean by that?" the woman asked.
"It means exactly what it says: you're too weak. Even among newbies like us, we still look down on you because you're not our match." The disparity between the weak and strong manifested differently at various stages; for those at the bottom tier, they were essentially on the same level as ash—anyone could spit on them without consequence.
Their self-esteem would only reveal their true selves after witnessing the real purpose of this battle. By that time, they should have made some progress. So now is not the right time to collaborate with them. However, even if it sounds heartwarming, Freyr would not suddenly show his true intentions towards him; it would be better to drive them away with malice.
