"Are you full?" Ross asked, standing up and greeting those around him. He felt that if he didn't do this, he might not even be able to leave the dining hall, especially with a teammate like him around, whose appetite was truly astonishing.
"Ah, I'm about eighty percent full," Xiong Tai sighed, hurriedly being pulled along by a few people as they walked out. Even as they left, a look of reluctance lingered on Xiong Tai's face. Eating was as important to him as smoking or drinking; it was something he had to do. However, while others enjoyed their meals as a way to savor life, Xiong Tai consumed food with the desperate intent of absorbing its essence. This was his unique ability: he could extract the essence from food and convert it into elemental energy for his body. This system of energy circulation was simply referred to as Ability.
While ordinary people did possess Elemental Power, it was usually quite weak. The food they consumed only provided a portion of what was necessary to sustain life. In contrast, Xiong Tai refined these Elemental Powers through massive amounts of food intake, storing them in his cells. When danger arose, these Elemental Powers would transform into reserve energy for him to draw upon.
As a result, he always stocked up on food. However, he was eventually pushed out of the dining hall, followed by a series of shouts and curses from inside—most of which were directed at him. Just as Xiong Tai turned to shout back, his companions shoved him forward. They did this not wanting him to ruin the atmosphere over something trivial like a meal.
Some people's physiques were just that peculiar; it wasn't necessary for them to endure everything for one matter. Xiong Tai certainly flaunted his attitude, so it was no surprise that others had opinions about him.
With a slight sigh, Xiong Tai said, "Why are you pushing me? I haven't offended any of you, have I? Honestly, what is going on? I was eating just fine; why push me out? What did I do wrong? I can apologize."
Ross's expression wasn't too pleasant as he shook his head slightly and replied, "This is just how you are—you only care about yourself. Didn't you notice how everyone looked at you just now? They treated you like livestock! You might not have realized it, but perhaps it has something to do with your special ability requiring you to consume so much food. Those who understand your situation know what's going on; however, those who don't think you're doing it on purpose. Don't be fooled by the apparent abundance of food here; it's allocated per person by the grain officials. Your way of eating means many others won't get enough food later on—that's why they look at you like that. If I hadn't stopped you from continuing this way, you might not be allowed back in the dining hall again and could end up being exposed for it. Your reputation would stink like durian—people would sense your foul odor from afar; you're just too naïve."
"Is it really that embarrassing? I had no idea! I thought they were just intimidated by my presence; turns out they had ill intentions! Oh man, I need to go talk to them about life and teach them some manners," Xiong Tai said, hanging his head before suddenly brightening up.
As soon as he said this, everyone present felt a sense of dread; this guy was looking for trouble. A ticking time bomb in the team—how could someone like him qualify as Vice Captain? Wasn't this just asking for punishment?
A team is composed of several individuals whose existence provides greater advantages than solitary hunters. Even those with lesser abilities can complement each other’s skills within a team. Not every person absorbed into a team is an elite; Commanders can sometimes misjudge talent and mistake pigs and dogs for dragons and phoenixes among men.
However, when certain Commanders reach a certain level of skill and prestige, they develop an eye for discerning matters clearly. To determine if someone can accomplish tasks mainly depends on their abilities—this is the primary criterion. Of course, character comes next; ultimately, it's about the results of their efforts. No team planner would consider letting an ostentatious show-off take on the main role in their squad.
Choosing such individuals leads to two possible outcomes: one is rebellious in nature while the other is someone deliberately brought into the team to be slowly undermined—both types are quite dangerous. Nevertheless, Freyr, as the team leader, was absolutely dedicated to his responsibilities. As for Vice Captain Xiong Tai, others found him more troublesome at times; his personality could be foolishly reckless or he could chase after someone relentlessly over a piece of meat—his goal merely being to obtain some food—preferring brute force over finesse in his approach.
Some of these things may not sound too bad, but sometimes they can easily trigger negative consequences midway through a mission. A personality can sometimes feel like a ticking time bomb. Someone with a character like Xiong Tai could never become a central figure in a team, let alone sit in the position of Vice Captain.
In this team, it’s not just about others; the harmonious atmosphere here is something that would be unimaginable at other times. "Let’s just leave it at that. We shouldn’t lower ourselves to their level. What good would it do to mention anything to them? The situation here is already quite clear. The human side is far from the harmony we imagined. It’s better for us to keep our guard up. If you want to eat something later, we can just bring food from the dining hall to you. It’s best not to show ourselves too much; startling the snake in the grass is not a good idea."
They undoubtedly understood this. If that kind of eating behavior happened again, getting hit would be just a matter of time. The food officer had prepared meals based on each person's average consumption, and Xiong Tai, being such a glutton, could eat as much as three people combined. It was clear that if anyone arrived late, they might not get any food at all.
In such a dangerous situation, if they couldn’t even fill their stomachs, how could they maintain the pressure and fight against the high-stakes environment? This could lead to mutiny! They might not fully understand what mutiny means; perhaps they had heard little about it before, but in this era, everyone’s thoughts revolve around survival.
Surviving also means eating well and being full. They risked their lives to become guardians of humanity, battling against the evil Zerg. Therefore, the first prerequisite for coming here was to ensure they could have enough to eat. If they couldn’t even fill their stomachs, how could they have the strength to fight? That would be pointless! Right now, they had not only offended this group of people but also angered both the food distribution personnel and the food officer. They might even face repercussions because of it.
