When the words were spoken, the other relatives in the family felt somewhat uncomfortable. The family power was largely divided into two factions: one loyal to Uncle-in-law and the other opposing faction led by Aunt. These two groups often clashed fiercely in business matters. At this moment, Great-Grandfather's words indicated a desire to clear the awkward atmosphere within the family. When the tree falls, the monkeys scatter; ultimately, both factions would merge into one.
After all, they were relatives who grew up in the same family; blood is thicker than water. It was precisely this reasoning that made them realize that there was no need for such urgency in their conflicts.
After much deliberation, Freyr unexpectedly found himself designated as the future leader of the family. Great-Grandfather's endorsement meant that he would undoubtedly become a dominant force in the future. This would likely lead to a significant internal purge within the family, and perhaps the happiest person would be Uncle-in-law, as his carefully nurtured seed had finally grown into adulthood and was personally recognized as the future leader. His benefits and status within the family would surely allow him to wield considerable influence.
In truth, Freyr had been unwittingly entangled in the feuds of these wealthy families. It wasn't until late at night that the family banquet finally dispersed. After persuading the excited Uncle-in-law to leave, Freyr could return to his room to rest, feeling somewhat annoyed at the thought that his future days off might be consumed by dealing with family affairs.
Upon entering the bedroom, he found his wife, Su Qian, dressed in an alluring nightgown.
Today, Great-Grandfather's public declaration had certainly brought her ample recognition as the wife of the future family leader. She felt thrilled at the prospect of her future status. Although Su Qian usually appeared gentle and quiet, she understood all too well the hardships she had endured over the years. Despite having everything she could want—jewels, delightful toys, and attention from many prominent men—she felt that such a life was not suited for her.
She was treated like a commodity; it wasn't her person they loved but rather her status and the monopolistic privileges that came with it. This was why those handsome young men sought her favor. Moreover, her very existence could bring significant upheaval to the family; her father had been a servant who had an affair with someone from the family before she was born. Although that servant had been a clandestine lover for two years before passing away after giving birth to her, her lineage was far from pure—she was considered an illegitimate child and might not even be honored in death within the family's ancestral temple.
However, only a few relatives showed her special care. The men in this family might appear glamorous on the outside, but they bore immense pressure day after day. Scandals involving relationships with various women often surfaced despite their commitments at home. What did it matter if they had families? Those women also had their own affairs; it was impossible to completely conceal the family's ugliness.
Freyr paid no mind to his wife's change in demeanor. He took off his suit, rubbed his eyes, and crawled under the covers to sleep. Su Qian's posture became stiff beside him until she finally took a deep breath and obediently snuggled back under the blankets to sleep.
The night passed without much change, and morning arrived once again.
Freyr might have felt physically and mentally exhausted, but he strictly adhered to waking up at four o'clock every morning. He needed to complete his morning exercises before breakfast was ready. After eating, he planned to catch up on reading newspapers—he had accumulated quite a stack that he hadn't read recently—and now he could take his time going through them one by one.
With nothing else demanding his attention, Su Qian accompanied him while their children played nearby, instantly improving the atmosphere in their home.
By nine o'clock, the Father-in-law woke up from bed and noticed the lively atmosphere in the living room, nodding with satisfaction.
Everything seemed to be back on track, but he worried about his daughter and her husband’s future. If they didn’t return, wouldn’t his daughter be left a widow? He had high hopes for this son-in-law; he was capable and bore the weight of humanity's responsibilities on his shoulders. He was also the only Survivor from that previous mission. Although he had forgotten the past, it seemed to be a temporary amnesia. Whether that was a good or bad thing remained uncertain. If he were to remember his past, wouldn’t he revert to that state of madness?
With these thoughts in mind, the Father-in-law sighed quietly in the corner of the living room, but his actions did not go unnoticed by the servants. He shook his head slightly and immediately gestured for them to keep quiet.
Stretching lazily, he walked over with a kind expression and smiled, “Good morning, Mai.” Mai was his granddaughter’s name, while his grandson was named Mi, making their names sound like food.
The two children bore a striking resemblance to each other.
Sister Mai was already seven years old and had developed her own sense of self.
Her younger brother Mi was only four years old. The little brother often found himself at the mercy of his sister’s whims. However, within the family, he was the one most spoiled by everyone. From the moment he was born, all wealth, high-end toys, and luxurious clothes revolved around him. Many young girls who hadn’t yet matured came to visit under the pretense of socializing with their parents. Their intentions were clear: if the children got along well, they could arrange a marriage between them as an example for future success.
While it was nice for them to play together, their shrewd grandfather outright rejected those clients' ideas; children were not tools for trade.
Though Grandpa had made many mistakes in his life, including having this most favored daughter who seemed to live comfortably, he knew that without parental companionship, childhood and spirit could suffer greatly. The quieter she became, the more uncomfortable he felt as a father and elder. He didn’t want his grandchildren to endure similar pain.
“Grandpa, you have bad breath,” Mai said bluntly.
“Mai, how can you speak to your grandpa like that?” Su Qian's serious voice rang out.
"But Mom, you said we have to brush our teeth every morning before we can eat, and Grandpa always forgets," Maido said.
"That's because Grandpa forgets," Su Qian replied.
This remark made Grandpa laugh heartily, and he immediately nodded in agreement. "That's right, that's right. As adults, we should set an example for the children. Otherwise, it would be hypocritical, and that wouldn't be good for their future growth. So, how about it, Mi? Do you want to go brush your teeth with Grandpa? I'll buy you a gift." Grandpa looked over at his grandson, who resembled a piece of malachite but was currently ignoring him. Instead, the little one turned away and grabbed a toy car from the floor, babbling excitedly as he played.
