The butler's eyes flashed with a hint of reluctance. After a moment, he slowly spoke, "Alright, I'll arrange for you all. You need to be ready. Come with me upstairs to get your makeup done."
"Okay~" Freyr replied cheerfully, and the butler nodded as he headed upstairs to prepare for what needed to be done. The remaining five turned to look at him.
"You made this decision without consulting us; isn't that a bit unfair?" Ross suddenly spoke up, his expression revealing a hint of seriousness. At that moment, it felt like they shouldn't engage in too much verbal conflict with him, or else it might lead to a bloody incident.
Seeing the almost furious look in Ross's eyes, David shook his head and let out a bitter laugh. He felt somewhat helpless at this moment; being the Commander was truly exhausting. Too many people under him were disobedient, and he should have anticipated such an outcome—he just hadn't expected it to come so quickly.
In fact, half of the team supported him while the other half despised his decision.
Many of their objections stemmed from his age; being too young was often cited as a reason to oppose any decisions he made.
Ross didn't like this approach, but when confronted with life-and-death situations, his choices reflected the thoughts of the three senior hunters around him.
They had no choice but to side with him. Xiong Tai and Relock had no better ideas and could only align themselves with someone they had spent enough time with and were familiar with. They could all smile lightly at the issue of death.
However, death was crucial for others; there was clearly no room for error.
If problems didn't arise now, they would inevitably surface later, catching this Commander off guard.
"Alright, I don't have any better ideas either. We'll be the targets; you all just need to cover our actions here. This shouldn't expose you, right?" Freyr said with a smile.
Ross was taken aback. Initially, he thought that if anything seemed unreasonable, he would replace him. His decision hadn't changed yet, but after hearing Freyr's words, he found himself more puzzled by the man's peculiar approach. He shook his head slightly and said, "I don't understand what you're trying to do. What benefit does this bring you? Isn't it better to know when to stop? Why risk your life like this? I really don't understand."
Freyr smiled lightly and continued, "Many things you will understand in the future. The reason you don't understand now is that you haven't experienced certain things. Once you have those experiences, you won't be afraid anymore, because you won't even have the qualification to be afraid. If you lack the courage to confront death, what can I do for you? Sacrifice is not terrifying; what's terrifying is not having the courage to prepare for death. It's like fearing that if you die, you'll lose everything. But I believe that even after death, this approach is still correct. There's no right or wrong in this. Since I'm not afraid of death, why should I waste time discussing meaningless matters with you? It seems superfluous. So it's just that you haven't experienced enough."
"Yeah, I don't understand," Ross said, struggling to digest Freyr's words as he turned to watch his retreating figure, mumbling to himself.
Parker shook his head and said, "Uh, I think he has a point. A team definitely can't all go in; it's better to have some people outside supporting us. What do you think, Mackey?"
Mackey looked at Parker's face and shook his head, continuing, "I still want to go with them. If I die, then so be it. I'm not afraid of death, but I don't want to return home only to be ridiculed by others. That's just how I feel."
Mackey also recognized Freyr's perspective. Although they had only recently met, he could sense a spirit in Freyr that was beyond his years. He was eager to learn about the secrets buried in Freyr's little-known past; this had become his current pursuit. This new Commander had reached a new spiritual height.
He couldn't change this fact, and after hearing those words, he found it hard to believe they came from a man under thirty. Leadership requires the accumulation of experience over time to gain others' recognition. If one lacks strength, they must rely on their leadership style and principles to earn respect. When young, most decisions are often criticized by others, increasing the likelihood of being sidelined or replaced—this was an unspoken rule among the Hunter Team.
Freyr's calmness and composure, along with his thoughts, surpassed any Commander Mackey had encountered before. This was what intrigued him about Freyr.
Mackey wanted to fight valiantly under such a thoughtful Commander until he could extract the secrets he longed to know from Freyr's lips.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door; Freyr and the others were already preparing in the butler's room.
They were dressed in attire used by the Ritual Insectoids, transforming them into Priests dedicated to the Insectoids. This aspect could not be decided hastily; otherwise, it would be seen as desecrating those enigmatic Insectoids.
Based on his deductions and through certain means, he was now able to confirm with one hundred percent certainty that they could have those Insectoids choose Priests without harming ordinary people.
Before this moment, every Priest who died would receive a substantial reward—before facing the guillotine, they would enjoy a good meal.
The best outcome is to die without any lingering attachment or sentiment towards the world.
The door opened, and Mackey stood at the entrance. The butler let him in, and as he stepped inside, he was hit by a nauseating smell.
To help the Insectoid distinguish who the Priest was, certain modifications had to be made to his body. The butler often took on these dirty jobs; it was the only work that allowed him to put food on the table.
Dealing with the dead had hardened his spirit, making it tougher than iron.
Thus, for those unfortunate souls deemed Priests, he would try his best to meet their requests. However, this was the first time someone had asked him to act as a Priest.
Every time he prepared his attire, he found himself struggling, wanting to say, "I really can't do this; you should leave."
Yet each time Freyr smiled gently at him and encouraged him to continue, claiming that this was not sending them to their deaths but rather a true solution to their problems.
Still, he hoped that in the future, he wouldn’t have to deal with such matters again, even though it was the only job he could get.
In truth, this work tormented his soul.
"Sigh, Commander, I’m here to fight alongside you. I've made up my mind; even if I die, I want to do it with you all," Mackey said as he hurried toward Freyr, responding with a spirited determination.
