The spiders attacked with incredible speed, their saliva carrying a potent corrosive quality. It was likely that before they even reached their target, their venom was already being sprayed at high velocity, mixing with the rain and striking the victims. Even if one survived, they would lose a piece of skin, and dying would still leave an unbearable itch—truly tormenting.
The Elite Hunter Team was fully prepared. They unleashed a barrage of techniques honed by the hunters, and as soon as the spiders reached the Tower, they were swiftly taken down by a new wave of Enhanced Hunters. The Elite Hunter Team worked in perfect harmony: one hunter defended while another led the attack. Once the spiders reached the Tower, the roles reversed; those who had been defending now became attackers, while the former attackers shifted to defense.
Each hunter exuded an unusual energy, a manifestation of their Abilities. Only hunters who had reached a certain level could produce a thin vapor that signified enhanced attack, defense, and increased power.
However, not every hunter possessed amplification effects; there were various types. The most common enhancement technique was Muscle Amplification, which required minimal cost while maximizing strength—a signature skill of the Enhanced Hunters.
Soon enough, numerous spiders appeared atop the Tower. Some were quite large, and among them were the fastest Juvenile Spiders facing off against the Mutated Mature Spiders. With their numerical advantage, only a few of the hundreds of Juvenile Spiders were knocked off the Tower, yet some still managed to reach its peak.
The sounds of battle erupted as hunters seamlessly coordinated along the thirty-meter-wide city wall, pushing these creatures off the Tower time and again. This scene was no longer one where low-ranking soldiers wielded Submachine Guns; witnessing it made the young garrison officer gasp in realization of why he was ordered to retreat—not due to lack of qualification but because his presence would hinder the Hunters' efforts.
"Get the injured down! Everyone gets one minute to recover; those severely wounded should be moved aside first," Maki's voice rang out amidst the chaos.
Iru let out a hearty laugh and said, "Half of you come with me up the Tower for support." He quickly leaped up the stairs, racing upward.
Though it was only half of them, due to the system of rewards and penalties in place, killing more Zerg s meant greater rewards. This system allowed them to advance further in future team-building efforts. Under such circumstances, even half was still significant; at Iru's command, all members of the Iru Hunter Corps charged toward the Tower with various weapons drawn.
"Everyone else follow me!" commanded Black Armor, a one-eyed man wielding an imposing longsword. He took off first up the Tower.
The Medusa, Fetter, and Brand hunter legions continuously surged up the Tower. The view from atop was relatively broad; however, given its length, even with so many hunters joining in, any additional Juvenile Spiders climbing up would be eliminated in seconds. The entire extermination process could be described as simple and brutal—lightly injured hunters remained on the front lines unless they sustained serious injuries that restricted their mobility; in such cases, they would be immediately replaced for treatment.
The Medusa legion became reinforcements for Cloya Legion. Freyr experienced his first confrontation against so many veterans facing the Zerg and felt an excitement bubbling within him.
Beside Freyr stood Good, who wielded the legendary North Star Wolf Blade. His fighting spirit was palpable, and at times, it was hard to see any signs of fatigue on his face. A thin veil of dark energy emanated from his body, instilling a sense of reverence among the gods. Freyr found it difficult to approach Good.
"Leave no one alive; kill them all!"
It was rare for Good to take the field himself. Among the One-Star Hunters, Fetter and Brand had never seen him in action. They were among the youngest recruits, barely over five years old, and their achievements and experience paled in comparison to those of their seniors who had completed missions for over a decade. However, their potential was undeniable.
Medusa turned her head toward the source of the voice. Upon seeing Good himself, she paused for a moment. Yet, the battle raged on, and no one noticed the distinct expression that flickered across her face. Nevertheless, it could not hide the overwhelming aura she exuded—one that rivaled even the most prominent men.
"Kill them now!" The rough voice rang out quickly. Before long, a murderous intent spread rapidly across the Tower, fueled by a fierce and unrelenting rage. Those who understood its origin knew that Medusa harbored deep resentment; the consequences would be dire. It was not hard to imagine—a noblewoman known for her elegance transformed into a brutish Diamond Barbie, her muscular armor barely containing her strength.
The two hunters nearby were momentarily stunned but quickly regained their composure.
"What are you staring at? Never seen anything like this before? Kill them! If you die, don’t let them cross the barriers behind you. Defend this land with your lives!"
"Yes!"
The two hunters responded eagerly and resumed their assault.
In the distance, the Zerg army had significantly dwindled in size. Perhaps after such a prolonged battle, they were finally showing signs of fatigue. Yet everyone knew about the resilience of this branch of the Zerg; it would take a long time before they could muster another large-scale attack. The horizon seemed endless, with no end to their numbers in sight.
Freyr gripped the Crimson Sun Sword tightly and pierced it through a spider's head. The creature did not die immediately; its body stiffened as if its central nervous system had been damaged. Freyr lifted the lifeless spider and hurled it down toward the Tower.
"Well done; you're far more capable than I imagined," Good praised him.
Freyr nodded, accepting the praise.
On one side of the Tower, the tactical division was clear. To conserve energy, they aimed to involve all the Hunters in the battle as much as possible, allowing them to absorb combat experience. For instance, they learned to target the head with Anomalous Projectiles and Dissonance Arrows, thanks to Freyr's initial techniques.
The goal was to disrupt the spiders' central nervous system, effectively reducing casualties.
The Enhanced Hunters were not afraid of these spiders; their bodies were resilient enough to withstand the spiders' attacks. The Strong Acid could not penetrate their skin, as their muscle fibers had been reinforced to a level far superior to that of rubber muscles.
Medusa employed a forbidden technique, generating a rage effect that caused her blood to boil further, enabling her to tap into potential strength developed over years of training.
However, the effect of this rage came with a cost. She had imposed a self-restriction, using her potential power for the next fifty years in exchange for each use diminishing her beauty. The price for each activation was a year lost from her life.
Yet she did not resolutely refuse to proceed; she desired a comprehensive victory to boost morale.
She even led by example, using herself as a human shield for her comrades. With bare hands, she brutally assaulted a spider, seizing a Mutated Spider by its head and pulling it apart with force. This risky yet straightforward and efficient approach quickly eliminated the spiders on her side, leaving other Hunters feeling redundant as they retreated to defend other positions within the Tower.
