The retreat order issued by Supreme Commander Ramiel had been given, but the young garrison officer did not immediately comply.
After delivering his message, Good allowed the five Hunter Teams behind him to quickly occupy the Trench line, preparing for any sudden situations that might arise.
After more than an hour of fierce fighting, both the Military Department and Kloya's Elite Hunter Team suffered varying degrees of casualties. The soldiers of the Military Department were particularly devastated, with lives lost at a rate of one per minute.
All the elite troops from the Military Department were dispatched to Trench Position Three. Since a few hours ago, Ramel Sergeant Major had led the royal army stationed there. With exceptional leadership skills, he managed to prevent any of the three positions from falling, even as casualties numbered in the thousands.
However, this did not dampen the morale of the soldiers. Their vigilant defense inflicted significant losses on the Mutated Spiders. Yet, their opponents were those who thrived in extreme conditions, displaying astonishing willpower even when starving.
The five Hunter Teams that had been dispatched were Medusa Hunter Team, Bran Hunter Corps, Fighter Hunter Team, Ilu Hunter Team, and Maki Hunter Team. Their purpose was to provide support, primarily to prevent significant losses among the elite hunters that the association had painstakingly trained. Although young hunters represented a vital foundation for the future, these seasoned veterans were currently the most likely candidates to lead the association in times to come. Many hunters could also earn the honor of becoming Star Hunters.
The Ilu Hunter Team showcased a fascinating manifestation-type ability. A solid wall over twenty meters high suddenly rose from the ground, seemingly cutting off everything from the outside world.
This ordinary-looking city wall, standing twenty meters tall and nearly five meters thick, was more than sufficient to support a manifestation-type legion for two hours. The primary purpose of manifestation-type abilities was to turn impossibilities into possibilities. Therefore, even if something seemed impossible or was merely heard of before, as long as one could conceive an idea and details, they could replicate a similar product.
The power of manifestation would be evident if one could simulate a ton of nuclear warheads for real-world bombardment; no living being could survive in such an environment—not even the manifestation-type hunters who created those materials would escape unscathed.
However, a tall stone wall with a height of twenty meters and a thickness of nearly five meters was indeed a good example of something that could be simulated effectively. Weapons with destructive power like tons of nuclear warheads would consume energy rapidly and lead to quick exhaustion; thus, simulating such city walls would still require considerable energy expenditure.
Even when creating something as simple as a knife would gradually drain the energy of a manifestation-type hunter. The current city wall was essentially a physical entity pieced together from parts constructed by a manifestation-type hunter. If even one part failed to hold up, the overall appearance of the wall would appear awkward.
At that moment, a gentle female voice spoke with an air of superiority: "Oh my, how unusual; you’re injured too." A girl wearing a plaid shirt and floral shoes with pink hair approached Kloya and sat down beside him, resting her chin on her hands as she looked at the young man next to her.
"Well, in battle, who doesn't get hurt? Being injured just reminds me that I'm still human. I learn my lessons, and I won't make such a foolish mistake again." Kloya shrugged, casually rolling up his sleeve to reveal an arm covered in scars.
The girl frowned and pinched the tender spot on Kloya's arm. "You always strive for perfection, wanting to challenge stronger opponents. Don't you care about your own life? There are hidden masters among humans that we don't know about. If you search carefully and learn diligently, you can still improve. There's no need to recklessly seek out opponents and force yourself to keep getting hurt. Doesn't your body feel pain? Are you made of iron?"
Kloya remained silent, gazing up at the darkening sky. Thick clouds had rolled in, and purple lightning occasionally flashed, startling the insects below. While humans were not afraid of thunder, the insects' thinking had not evolved; they still showed signs of fear.
Suddenly, a torrential downpour began, the sky growing darker as the rainy season set in. The combat capabilities of the Hunters in extreme conditions were now a concern. Although the Hunters possessed various abilities, none could rival nature itself, so they couldn't afford for the rain to stop.
"Get to the city walls," Kloya finally spoke after a long silence. Most members of the Elite Hunter Team obeyed his command. Although being up high during the rainy season posed significant risks, the imminent attack from the Zerg was pressing. The towering Mutated Spiders provided excellent cover against the storm, with Juvenile Spiders quickly becoming the vanguard for the siege.
"Have you lost your mind? Your injury isn't even healed yet; otherwise, you'll have a scar on that arm," Maki's voice chimed in from nearby. As one of the few female hunters and a One-Star Hunter herself, Maki specialized not in combat but in medical abilities to treat injuries.
Her unique ability allowed her to weave threads of energy that could stitch together damaged cells beyond visible observation. Not even the raging storm could hinder her healing methods. Maki often worked under immense pressure, having dealt with countless injuries; her seamless medical skills earned her a place among the One-Star Hunters.
"This isn't a big deal; this level of pain is nothing for a man," Kloya said as he pulled away from Maki's half-finished treatment. Startled by his sudden movement, Maki gasped.
It was always Injury that raised prices, fearing that Maki might say something like "I'm sorry, I can't do it." Yet only Kloya dared to refuse so decisively.
As the saying goes, men who are unattainable become more cherished; this applies to everyone.
Maki was taken aback and froze for a moment before exclaiming, "Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?"
"A scar is proof of manhood," Kloya shot her a sideways glance before stepping onto the stone wall of the city and issuing commands to fend off the approaching Mutated Spiders once more.
The spider's aggression did not cease simply because a wall stood in its way. After a slight slowdown, it quickly used its naturally evolved claws to climb up the wall. Soon, the towering stone wall, over twenty meters high, was covered with a mass of dark, crawling creatures.
"Everyone, stay alert and don't let your guard down," Kloya reminded them. Anomalous Bullets whizzed through the air, continuously firing. This time, the spider's assault was incredibly swift and unexpected, charging forward with all its might. At the same time, the massive Mutated Spiders moved quickly, using their bulk as a shield, allowing more and more spiders to approach the top of the high wall.
