"Please, take a seat." The Commander's voice was gentle yet filled with passion, almost as if he wanted to step down and embrace everyone present. However, his position restrained such actions, and he appeared as if he were seeing family after a long separation.
In truth, the meeting of the Military Department had already concluded. When they entered, only a few summaries remained to be fully articulated, but the main points were clear to all the officers. As they returned to their usual demeanor, those officers who noticed the newcomers felt it inappropriate to linger, and within moments, they vanished from sight.
Once they were gone, the Commander finally let go of his public facade, revealing a hint of sorrow on his face.
"Ramel Sergeant Major, your expression seems off; the situation here is not what you make it out to be."
Medusa's voice trembled slightly. Ramel's brow furrowed; his disguise was merely for the benefit of the lower-ranking officers. Discussing strategic positions was just a way to prolong the life of this unit. There was no way other military districts would mobilize large forces for a single city.
Had Medusa caught on to something unusual?
She understood that those who felt guilty could not keep secrets hidden for long. While he managed to conceal himself well under scrutiny, it only demonstrated that he was a skilled actor and a master of disguise. Yet his subconscious actions betrayed his unease.
Ramiel stepped lightly toward the platform, taking a deep breath before speaking in a low tone. "You've seen through me. Yes, I lied in front of them. In truth, besides myself, several other officers are aware that the situation here has essentially solidified. According to biological detection wave readings, from those silken cocoons, 00-00 spiders will hatch at any moment. No creature stands a chance against them; even humans are merely prey. Before you arrived, my unit had already lost over 000 personnel in defensive battles. But we cannot retreat; the Giant Hive behind us must not fall. Moreover, beneath this city lies a wealth of naturally occurring metal deposits—rare copper and iron—and the soil seems suitable for rice cultivation. This is essentially a treasure trove; it would be a shame to abandon it."
"However," he continued, "we have not come away empty-handed. The threads can be burned through. Initially, when our troops were stationed here, this area was also a control point for the giant cocoons. We employed various methods—using Dry Ice sprayers to freeze and shatter them and direct flames at minimal cost—and soon cleared out enough space for our camp."
"My remaining forces number around 000. I have requested assistance from the Mecha Association and also reached out to the Hunter Association. If you had arrived even slightly later, we would have been at our wits' end. Thanks to your arrival, my warriors and I feel renewed hope in holding this line."
At this point, new footsteps filled the area outside the Command Tent once more. Besides Medusa's team, several One-Star Hunters accompanied by numerous hunters appeared before the Command Tent. The Giant Hive had never faced such an unprecedented force; those sent by the Hunter Association could rival an army.
Ramiel felt overwhelmed with emotion and struggled to find words as the One-Star Hunters began introducing themselves one by one. Then Two-Star Hunter Menechdar made an appearance, and Ramel Sergeant Major knelt down as if greeting an old friend, tears welling in his eyes.
"How old are you now, and still unable to get up?" Menechdar's voice was cold and stern, though he was quite surprised to see an old acquaintance in such a place. If it weren't for the many people watching, he would have casually dismissed Ramiel's actions.
However, Ramiel was the highest Commander of the Giant Hive. Kneeling in front of an outsider and crying was tantamount to losing face in front of the entire army, which would surely create a rift between them, making cooperation even more difficult.
"Yes, teacher." The next exchange left everyone around them speechless with astonishment. "A student is always your disciple. If possible, I truly wish to follow you forever."
Menechdar hurried forward to help the still-kneeling Ramiel up, nodding with a smile. "Your heart is already in turmoil. Do you remember what I taught you? Wait until you calm down before speaking. For now, get up. You are the Commander of the Giant Hive, and it's clear that you've fortified this place well."
After hearing Menechdar's words, Ramiel slowly stood up from the ground, his hands tucked into his pockets. He quickly regained his composure, adopting a more reserved demeanor. The tear stains were still visible around his eyes, but his emotions had stabilized.
Only then did Menechdar turn to look at the members of the Hunter Youth Corps behind him. "Alright, I've heard your heart begin to calm down. Team leaders, come with me."
Everyone had been left speechless with surprise. Among those present were not only officers from the Military Department but also elite members from the Mecha Association. They all stared blankly, and Menechdar walked away without looking back, even moving faster than Ramiel Sergeant Major. It was clear that their teacher-student bond transcended rank; no one dared to comment on who led first.
With emotions already settled, Ramiel took a seat while Menechdar sat in the main position on his right side. He was there primarily to discuss the recent anomalies at Giant Gorge Pass, speaking vividly while occasionally glancing at his teacher for input. Menechdar raised a hand to redirect Ramiel's focus back to the people below.
The situation was quite awkward; Menechdar's position wasn't particularly advantageous, but he didn't exert any dominance that could worsen things. In contrast, with Menechdar's imposing presence as cover, Ramiel seemed unreserved in sharing all the facts.
"Alright, let me summarize," he began. "The situation here is complex. Our Hunter Association is here to assist at the front lines. Now that we’ve reached this point, some things should be made clear: completing this mission will yield a total reward of 100,000 Score points from above. So you understand that high rewards come with high risks; those who survive will receive rewards based on their performance."
"The highest reward is 50,000 Score points. Each of you will have your kills recorded on your hunter licenses; I'm sure you're aware of their purpose by now. The first place will receive 10,000 Score points, second place 5,000 Score points, third place 1,000 Score points—this continues down to the last position. Even if you come in last, you'll still earn 100 Score points. So strive hard; just remember that surviving is essential to enjoy these rewards. This is my minimum requirement for you: do not die. Understood?"
