"Let's get started!"
Freyr sighed, calmly wiping the sweat from his forehead.
Guo Yu stood nearby, feeling anxious and doing nothing. He looked at the girl in the chair, her face pale and her vital signs on the monitor weakening. The brainwaves were still responding in their final moments, but the patterns looked complex. Without any medical knowledge, it was as if he was trying to learn geometric laws—utterly incomprehensible.
Freyr manipulated the machine, his hands moving over the intricate structure of brain matter. The pure folds were filled with various cells, and the machine operated with precision, able to identify which cells were beneficial and which were meaningless. However, achieving perfection in this biological surgery reform was a daunting task.
As the brain slipped into a state of unconsciousness, the hypnotic waves could not delve deeply into its potential. Thus, even while awake, she had to endure immense pain, as if countless scalpels were carving scars within her head. Zhao Tingting suddenly opened her eyes wide, gripping the armrests of the chair tightly, her body tensing in agony.
Even those watching could tell what kind of suffering the person in the chair was enduring. The human brain is a peculiar storage device, much like a disk; even if fine details are forgotten over time, they can be recalled immediately after repair.
The function of the hypnotic waves was to unearth that buried potential. Freyr understood that each telepath's abilities varied but could be categorized into three forms.
The first type is a human radar; in situations where electronic devices fail, having a human radar nearby is quite convenient. The second type is a precog, possessing the ability to communicate with living beings—in other words, they can establish some form of exchange with the Zerg, making them more suited for gathering intelligence from captives of that race. The third type is a mind controller; through brain domain development, they become telepaths. This group possesses pure mental attributes and vengeful abilities, capable of perceiving hidden vulnerabilities in their opponents' hearts and breaking down mental barriers through weaknesses.
Ultimately determining which type of sensor one could become depends on the level of brain domain development. Not everyone is suited to be a telepath; those with exceptionally developed brains and extraordinary prophetic abilities are exceedingly rare. In past generations, telepaths were only allocated to large units; Freyr's branch team had no qualifications to possess such powerful capabilities.
Zhao Tingting's hands gripped the chair tightly as sweat dripped from her forehead onto her damp coat. Pain is not something everyone can endure, especially for a delicate girl like her. Her legs kicked against the floor desperately; although she wanted to stand up from the chair, her body was strapped down by safety belts.
"Can you hurry up? Tingting seems to be in a lot of pain."
Guo Yu watched anxiously, feeling helpless as he couldn't intervene directly. He could only assist by managing minor tasks. He reached for a piece of disinfecting paper with scissors and used it to wipe Freyr's sweaty forehead.
"This is unavoidable; I'm doing my best. Please be quiet for a moment and pass me that water over there so I can take a sip."
Guo Yu nodded silently and walked over to grab a bottle of mineral water from the cabinet. He returned to Freyr's side and handed it over for him to drink.
The process was time-consuming, and everyone felt anxious as half an hour passed. Normally, developing a telepath's brain domain would only take about ten minutes; however, this time the machine showed no signs of stopping—not due to program errors or delays caused by issues with the Brain project.
Freyr glanced at the watch on his wrist, anxious and restless. Guo Yu felt the same way. He said, "It's been a while, and we still don't know how the battle is going over there. As soon as we finish developing the brain domain here, we will have a chance at victory. I hope they can hold on a little longer."
Guo Yu shot a glance at Freyr. At this point, being anxious was pointless. He spoke up, "Now that we've come this far, just tell me honestly—how can you be so sure she is a Telepath?"
"I can't explain it; it's just my intuition. The first time I heard your voice during the implantation, I noticed the girl here. The feeling was strong; she must have guided you around quite a few enemies. The fact that you’ve made it this far is thanks to her intuition supporting you. Isn't someone like that terrifying?"
"Also, when I encountered you, from a thousand meters away, I felt eyes peering into my soul. It's not a sensation I often experience, so it's hard to forget. And when I saw her, it was her declaration of being a superpower user that caught my attention. So I thought I'd test her out, and to my surprise, I guessed correctly. The experiment still has thirty minutes left, but there's one question—her potential is incredibly strong."
Just as he finished speaking, a weak gasp came from nearby. It was Zhao Tingting's shallow breathing. Time passed slowly before her breath gradually calmed down. At that moment, she opened her eyes; her long hair clung to her pale face, making it look as if her entire body was drenched in sweat. The heat radiated off her, yet it was hard to tell just how weak she truly was—there were no visible wounds on her body, but she appeared utterly drained.
She looked like a starving ghost, her facial bones sunken in and frail.
"That's enough; let's try injecting some mental energy now. You should be able to do it if you concentrate," Freyr said as he looked at the weakened Zhao Tingting and reached out to hand her three pieces of Memory Metal.
Guo Yu observed her exhausted state coldly and said, "If we lose this match, then so be it. Can she even hold on in this condition? Freyr, do you want her to die? After one surgery, you want her to go into battle again? Forget it; if we lose together, we can always win back next time!"
"There won't be a next time. If we lose this time, our lives for the next four years will be extremely passive. The prize for winning is the Gene Pill; that thing can enhance physical attributes. If they get the Gene Pill and alter their bodies while we become their defeated foes, we'll be living in hell for four years—it's survival of the fittest with immense pressure."
Freyr understood the current situation well. Although they couldn't be disturbed during the surgery, he still managed to gather information about the battlefield through low-frequency sounds from the implantation process. In other words, aside from a few people who were barely holding on, there wasn't much time left. The Cosmic Worms weren't in a hurry to eliminate them; after tormenting one person, they would turn their attention to bullying those with timid personalities, thoroughly humiliating them by crushing their self-esteem.
When it came down to it, few would want to continue fighting. Some would even tear off their blue badges themselves and eliminate themselves from the competition. This meant that neither side would benefit in such a scenario; for four years ahead, they would truly be under constant pressure. Once the Cosmic Insect Faction obtained the Gene Pill, they would cause trouble everywhere in their previous lives—especially Maggie, the leader of the Cosmic Worms, who became a fugitive due to fighting.
This incident made headlines at school back then. Freyr knew Maggie had a terrible personality and brought pressure upon himself as well; however, no matter what happened, he couldn't give up this opportunity.
"We cannot give up—absolutely not." Freyr raised his head to meet Guo Yu's gaze calmly and said, "As long as she injects mental energy into me, I'll handle everything else."
As they spoke, suddenly there was a noise beside Freyr.
Zhao Tingting held three square pieces of Memory Metal in her hands, and with a slight sensation, visible blue particles began to swirl and converge. The two of them watched as the light flickered through the gaps in her palms.
“Spiritual energy is overflowing!”
Freyr caught a glimpse and saw that the Memory Metal was no longer dull but instead radiated a flowing blue light.
As Freyr was astonished, Guo Yu couldn't help but feel surprised as well. Was this really the same frail girl he had seen before?
Now, after developing her brain domain, Zhao Tingting's pupils sparkled with vitality. Her long hair flowed freely, her pupils had transformed from black to a light blue, and her skin, which had always been somewhat yellowish, now appeared fair and quickly regained its rosy hue. This girl was gradually recovering.
“Ah, what’s happening?”
Freyr took the three pieces of Memory Metal and tucked them into his pocket. He stepped closer to check her pulse, his brow furrowed. Guo Yu felt a wave of anxiety wash over him, but when he saw Freyr’s expression suddenly turn serious, his frustration was about to boil over. Freyr stroked his chin, withdrew his hand, and pulled back the surrounding curtain as he stepped outside, finally allowing his heart to settle.
“You really scared me!”
He walked over and gave Freyr a firm tap on the forehead, not realizing how dramatic Freyr could be. His earlier expression had truly alarmed him. However, seeing that the woman he cared for was fine eased Guo Yu's worries.
“You had me worried sick.” Guo Yu returned to Zhao Tingting’s side and took her hand with concern.
“I know you were worried about me even without you saying it. Don’t forget I have superpowers; I can sense everything you think,” Zhao Tingting replied with a smile.
Guo Yu wrapped his arms around Zhao Tingting and gently stroked her damp forehead. “I’m so glad to see you’re okay. Do you have any idea how worried I was?”
“I know, I know. When I was in pain, I could hear your heart crying out. I know everything; please stop,” Zhao Tingting said as she grasped his collar, her eyes gradually moistening.
Freyr watched this scene unfold and felt the coldness in his heart thawing somewhat. He took a deep breath and gently closed the door behind him. In this moment, the two of them were utterly powerless; they would stand no chance in battle on the battlefield. Understanding this, he quietly withdrew, knowing that the three pieces of Memory Metal infused with golden energy were his path to victory.
At the same time, he dashed out the door, and within a little over half an hour, the light began to dim slightly.
With little time left, he sprinted down the road with all his might. Fueled by sheer determination, he pushed himself to the limit. After fourteen days of grueling training, his physical explosiveness had developed significantly, allowing him to return to the grand hall in just a few minutes. At that moment, his greatest concern was the situation of his companions.
The piercing screams echoed in his mind as if he were experiencing them firsthand. He had no idea what had transpired during this time, but facing an enemy force larger than his own team felt like a desperate gamble. As the captain, he had merely suggested the mission offhandedly; those who remained were obligated to execute it. The fate of those following orders was all too predictable.
“Everyone, wait for me! I will soon fight alongside you; I will not abandon you.”
Freya was extremely anxious, still able to hear the cries of his companions through the chaos. His heart felt like it was bleeding; his pupils filled with a red mist. In just two minutes, he broke through the limits of human speed and charged into a cluster of buildings ahead. At that moment, he saw several shadows beating a man on the ground mercilessly.
Furious at what he witnessed, he slapped his cheeks to maintain his momentum and shouted, “Stop! All of you, stop right now! Otherwise, I will ensure you have no place to die!”
A few Cosmic Worms turned around, staring at the astonishingly fast shadow approaching them with impatience and muttering curses under their breath.
However, they did not cease their assault on the man lying on the ground; one of them stepped on Xuanyuan Shun's head.
Xuanyuan Shun clung tightly to one of the Cosmic Worms' legs, blood covering his face. He looked up at the familiar shadow and couldn't help but grin. “He’s here! I knew he would come back; you’ve lost!”
On another side, a man covered in blood with multiple bruises and swollen features managed a faint smile despite his condition. “Hey there, brother! This is fantastic; our captain has arrived! You’ve lost!”
