Listening to Long Xiao Wu's narration, Zhao Yang initially wanted to ask how Long Xiao Wu knew so much. However, he recalled that there were too many secrets surrounding him, and he possessed the Destiny Pearl. As a brother, since Long Xiao Wu did not take the initiative to speak, there was no need for him to pry. Gazing at the faint light emanating from above the Fish Pond, Zhao Yang felt a lingering fear as he recalled the terrifying scene he had witnessed in the water earlier.
A black Flood Dragon, stretching several miles, lay quietly coiled at the bottom of the Fish Pond. It had no horns or claws, and its long whiskers rested in the muddy bottom, indicating it had not moved for a very long time. Its body was covered in scales, and Zhao Yang realized that the spot where he had been standing earlier was right on top of one of these Giant Flood Dragon's scales. The scale was ancient and dull, having lost its luster and developed a layer of mottled rust, resembling a Divine Sculpture lying horizontally underground, in the ancient abyss of the underworld, in a state of desolate slumber. Looking back at where the Destiny Pearl had previously adhered, it was located at the center of the Giant Serpent's forehead. The Giant Serpent appeared fierce and menacing; if Zhao Yang had seen it earlier, he would never have dared to approach. Although it showed no signs of anger, it instilled immense fear, as if merely opening its eyes could cause mountains to crumble and clouds to disperse.
At the center of the Giant Serpent's forehead was a massive wound, measuring about ten meters across. The surrounding area was charred black, resembling a giant rock wall. At this enormous wound was an opening that penetrated deep into the Giant Serpent's skull; this injury had claimed its life.
What kind of person could inflict such a fatal wound on such a colossal creature? Was it a human or an immortal? Looking at the somewhat blackened corpse of the Giant Serpent, which seemed to have been scorched by lightning, could it be that a thunder tribulation had taken its life? Otherwise, how could such an Ancient Deity-like existence die so tragically?
An ancient and prolonged sigh echoed from deep within the Fish Pond. Zhao Yang felt dazed for a moment as if he could see the giant dragon battling against heaven during a stormy night filled with lightning and rain, striving to transform into a true divine dragon and ascend to the heavens. Countless cultivators attacked it in an attempt to seize the incredible dragon pearl contained within its body. Ultimately, it succumbed to their overwhelming assault, sustaining severe injuries and being struck through the skull by the final bolt of heavenly lightning, dying with resentment.
Long Xiao Wu and Scholar Xiu also empathized with Zhao Yang's vision through that sigh; an atmosphere of shared sorrow enveloped them.
"No wonder Shiyunsheng has come to Fish Pond repeatedly at night; it turns out he is after the corpse of this ancient Giant Serpent!" Scholar Xiu murmured.
Zhao Yang and Long Xiao Wu were both startled; they hadn't expected Shiyunsheng to have such intentions. Shiyunsheng had claimed ten years ago to be an unparalleled genius whose combat power surpassed that of elite-level Single Attribute Spiritual Root cultivators. At just ten years old, he had reached the ninth level of Qi Refinement Stage. However, unexpectedly, he was someone without a Spiritual Root; his cultivation throughout his life could only reach below Foundation Establishment Stage. Over many years, no one who challenged Shiyunsheng had ever survived even one move under his hands, including Qin Army from Outer Sect who was also at Qi Refinement Stage level nine.
"I wonder how he discovered the corpse of this ancient flood dragon. Although that Giant Serpent is dead now, its body has not decayed; its flesh still contains immense dragon energy. If he can absorb all that dragon energy, he will surely soar in cultivation. Otherwise, how could I have jumped from Qi Refinement Stage level five to level eight in just a short while?"
"What?!" Scholar Xiu exclaimed in shock. "That's too monstrous! No way! You all have to take me down too; I want to level up three or five ranks as well!"
Zhao Yang patted Scholar Xiu on the shoulder and said, "There's another smaller one down there; it looks like a snake but is only thirty meters long. However, it's strange—it emits a strong light that illuminates an area of about a thousand meters around it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to see clearly that ancient Giant Serpent's corpse. That snake looks like a little loach compared to the Giant Serpent; in comparison to it, it's just an ant."
Before Scholar Xiu could respond, Long Xiao Wu suddenly exclaimed: "It's Jade Dragon! You actually discovered Jade Dragon! I found it strange why Shiyunsheng discovered the ancient flood dragon's corpse so early but delayed taking action. I thought perhaps he wasn't good at swimming or didn't know how to proceed. Now it seems his aim isn't just the ancient flood dragon's corpse but rather the Jade Dragon that emerged after its death! He wants Jade Dragon to absorb the remaining dragon energy within the Giant Serpent so that when it transforms into a perfect Jade Crawler, he can capture it and consume its inner dan—becoming one of those rumored Perfect Foundation powerhouses!"
“Perfect Foundation?” Zhao Yang asked, puzzled.
“Could it be true, Xiao Wu? Are you saying there exists a Perfect Foundation that surpasses the Flawless Foundation in theory?” Scholar Xiu, who had read numerous texts on cultivation, inquired with interest upon hearing Long Xiao Wu mention a theory he had come across in a certain Daoist text.
Long Xiao Wu nodded and said, “That's right. The Perfect Foundation is not merely theoretical; it truly exists. This is an ancient saying passed down in my family. The Jade Crawler is a Divine Artifact formed from the fusion of the Dragon Soul and the Water Spirit. It is ethereal and almost celestial, possessing almost no offensive power. However, it is incredibly difficult to capture in water due to its remarkable speed. Catching it is extremely challenging unless something can attract it, like the immense dragon energy remaining within the Giant Serpent, or…”
At this point, Long Xiao Wu hesitated. Zhao Yang, being astute, quickly deduced that Long Xiao Wu was referring to his Destiny Pearl. The fact that Long Xiao Wu was willing to lend him the Destiny Pearl was tantamount to entrusting his life to him. Even if some matters remained unspoken, it was enough for him to know that Long Xiao Wu was a brother worth sharing hardships with.
Zhao Yang patted Long Xiao Wu on the shoulder and deliberately changed the subject. “What exactly is this Perfect Foundation you speak of? Is there really a distinction between perfect and imperfect foundations?”
Upon hearing Zhao Yang's question, Scholar Xiu immediately became animated. Clearing his throat, he said, “When it comes to cultivation theory, if I claim to be second best, no one would dare call themselves first. You are correct; there are indeed distinctions in how cultivators establish their foundations, much like how various types of Spiritual Roots differ in quality during the Qi Refinement Stage. When cultivators break through to the Great Perfection of the Qi Refinement Stage, they form a Foundation Stage above their Dantian, within their Qi Sea. The quality of the Foundation Stage varies according to the cultivator's Spiritual Root, which can be categorized into different types: Fragmented Foundation, Ordinary Foundation, Imperfect Foundation, and Flawless Foundation. Generally, cultivators with a mixed spiritual root form a Fragmented Foundation. The surface of a Fragmented Foundation is riddled with cracks in its spirit energy, making it impossible to establish a complete circulation system. Consequently, they absorb spirit energy at an excruciatingly slow rate and find it challenging to achieve significant accomplishments throughout their lives. A cultivator with slightly better spiritual roots may form an Ordinary Foundation, which is considerably better than a fragmented one. Although an Ordinary Foundation also has cracks on its surface, they are shallow and allow for proper circulation of true qi. Next comes the Imperfect Foundation, which can typically only be cultivated by geniuses with single attribute spiritual roots. An Imperfect Foundation may have one or two minor cracks but is otherwise quite stable. Finally, there is the nearly perfect type known as the mirror-like Flawless Foundation. Those who possess a Flawless Foundation are elite geniuses among geniuses; each one is a candidate for sect leader status. Although it is called flawless, there are always some minor imperfections during its formation. These flaws do not affect cultivation but may hinder future enlightenment. If someone manages to cultivate their foundation to perfection, they will be nurtured as successors by various sect leaders. However, as for what you mentioned about the theoretical existence of a Perfect Foundation, while it may exist in theory, it has never appeared throughout history.”
Zhao Yang nodded thoughtfully. He hadn’t realized there were so many intricacies involved in establishing a foundation. Considering his own chaotic root that contained various spiritual root attributes, he couldn’t help but feel anxious—could he end up with a Fragmented Foundation?
Continuing from where Scholar Xiu left off, Long Xiao Wu added, “What you mentioned are merely records from millennia ago. I can assure you that there indeed existed a Perfect Foundation, and not just once. From the time of the Ancient Celestial Era, through the subsequent eras, no more than ten individuals have ever achieved a true Perfect Foundation. Each one of them was a figure who dominated their contemporaries.”
“How do you know this so clearly?” Although aware that some things were best left unasked, curiosity compelled Scholar Xiu to inquire further.
“Because my ancestor was one of them,” replied Long Xiao Wu, candidly revealing without any concealment.
This revelation left both Zhao Yang and Scholar Xiu astonished. Zhao Yang recalled the aura he had sensed from Long Xiao Wu, along with what he had said before jumping into the fish pond about feeling the essence of origins. Then he thought about how Long Xiao Wu possessed the unique item known as the Destiny Pearl. Suddenly realizing something alarming, Zhao Yang's face turned pale as he glanced at Long Xiao Wu, fearing he might transform into some elongated creature as well.
