"Bet big or small, once you buy, you're in for the ride! Oh my, the two gentlemen have won again! Congratulations to both of you, truly a stroke of good fortune, wealth flowing in, unstoppable!"
"Haha, where are you? Today my brother and I are happy, so everyone gets a share of the cattle and pigs. However, the last two barrels of wine will be kept for ourselves."
"Thank you for your generosity, I, Zhang Fan, will definitely serve you well in the future..."
"How dare you!" A loud shout startled everyone inside and outside the room. "You, Zhang Fan, and you two useless ones! When did our Myriad Spirit Sect become so lawless? You are openly gambling here, disregarding the rules and neglecting your duties. Instead of working hard for a bright future, you spend your days drinking and having fun while we cultivators starve. What kind of behavior is this?"
"Oh ho! Isn't this the scholar? Come, come, my brother and I have missed you. Sit down. How have you been these past month? Have you made any progress with the Sect's techniques? By the way, what is our Myriad Spirit Sect's technique called?" Long Xiao Wu was tipsy and red-faced; upon seeing the scholar, he became lively and started chatting away.
"Our Myriad Spirit Sect's technique is called the Universal Scripture. Ever since I began cultivating this technique, I've progressed from the sixth level of Qi Refinement Stage to the seventh level. However, due to my hunger..."
"That's where you're wrong! If you're hungry, just come to our back mountain's firewood room; there are plenty of cattle and sheep for you to eat. Here, take this pig leg. We're all brothers now; don't be polite with me or I'll get angry!" Long Xiao Wu grabbed a greasy pig leg from the table and handed it to the scholar. After spending time with Zhao Yang, his already mischievous nature had become even more unruly.
Seeing such hospitality from Long Xiao Wu made the scholar lose his earlier confidence as a representative seeking justice. As they say, one doesn't strike a smiling face; especially when someone is patting his shoulder and chatting amicably. He hesitated for a moment wanting to refuse but felt too hungry to maintain any pretense. With everyone watching, he sat down and began to gnaw on the pig leg.
The few companions who entered with him were left dumbfounded; this change happened too quickly!
"Come on! Aren't you all hungry? Come in and eat something! You see, you came empty-handed; put down your swords and knives first. Let's eat before we talk; don’t be polite with us or I’ll get angry!" Zhao Yang chimed in again, pulling those who had entered into the house. With good food and wine laid out before them, those who had initially planned to kill everyone inside were now disarmed by such hospitality. After being scolded a bit but still treated kindly, they no longer harbored any murderous intent.
"You guys hurry to the kitchen and add more dishes! And what about those outside? My brother and I have been called useless trash in the Outer Sect all day long and have been bullied enough. Only these brothers here treat us kindly. Bring out those last two barrels of wine; today we drink until we drop!" Zhao Yang instructed his subordinates to prepare food and drinks. Over this past month, dozens of people had been trained to follow orders without complaint because every time he feasted on meat and wine, he invited everyone to join in.
The helpers brought out prepared stewed meat from the kitchen and followed Zhao Yang's method to season it with various spices while placing several bowls of vinegar on the table. Everyone was unfamiliar with this way of eating and didn't know how to proceed at first. Zhao Yang smiled brightly as he picked up a small knife from the table to slice a piece of prime meat from the center of the platter. Dipping it in seasoning and then vinegar before tasting it with an expression of pure enjoyment, he exclaimed, "Mmm, this is truly a delicacy! This method of eating is a family tradition from my hometown; my ancestor was once a royal chef in the palace. This dish is something only emperors are qualified to eat! Don’t just stare at it; dig in! We can talk after we finish eating."
Several people were already drooling with hunger, and they didn’t care about the knives on the table anymore. They simply tore into the roasted pig with their hands, quickly devouring it completely. Zhao Yang, seeing that everyone still seemed unsatisfied, chuckled and asked, “I wonder what brings you all here to my humble abode today?”
Among them, a burly man with a bushy beard replied, “Brother, ever since you came to this back mountain woodshed, none of us from the Outer Sect have had a proper meal. None of us have reached the Foundation Establishment Stage yet, so we can’t fast for long. That’s why we agreed to come here today to confront you. There are thousands of disciples waiting outside the courtyard. If it weren’t for us few high-level cultivators coming in as representatives, they would have rushed in here out of hunger.”
“Let them come in! I’ll take them all on and let them call me useless!” Long Xiao Wu shouted carelessly.
“Brother, you mustn’t be rude. We are all civilized people; fighting is something only uncultured folks do. As members of a great family, we must win people over with virtue. Even if they want to kill us, we should at least wash our necks clean for them to chop!” Zhao Yang pouted and pretended to scold Long Xiao Wu with a serious expression.
Long Xiao Wu took a deep breath, nearly bursting into laughter, but then he solemnly replied, “You are right, brother.”
Zhao Yang nodded and then turned to the others at the table with a flattering smile. “I just heard you say that you came in as representatives because of your high cultivation levels. May I ask what levels you all are at?”
“I’m at the eighth level of Qi Refinement Stage; the others are at the seventh level,” the burly man said. “After a month of cultivation, we’ve all progressed from early to late stages.”
“So that means you’re the top genius of our Myriad Spirit Sect’s Outer Sect? Do you have any leadership skills or charisma?” Zhao Yang asked.
The burly man quickly waved his hands in response. “I wouldn’t dare claim to be the best of the Outer Sect; there are two who are stuck at the ninth level of Qi Refinement Stage. I’ve heard one is already close to perfection in the late stage and could break through to Foundation Establishment Stage within three months if he has enough spirit herbs.”
“Oh, that’s quite impressive! But I’m curious why those two at Qi Refinement Stage level nine aren’t here?” Zhao Yang inquired.
“They’re both at level nine and can go to the Outer Sect’s Alchemist's Chamber to receive Pill of Starvation Resistance for free without limits. They try to minimize mundane activities and focus all their time on cultivation to enter the Inner Sect as soon as possible.”
“I see,” Zhao Yang nodded thoughtfully. He then signaled his subordinates in the woodshed to step back. Once he confirmed there were no outsiders around, he spoke mysteriously, “I have a business proposal that I wonder if you’d be interested in. If you participate, I guarantee your cultivation will soar, and within a year, you’ll be able to enter the Inner Sect!” Upon hearing this, everyone was momentarily speechless. Even the scholar who was gnawing on a pig leg put it down and gathered closer.
