Raymond pressed his fingers against his temples, the feeling of dizziness intensifying. Everything before him began to blur, and his ears seemed filled with a buzzing sound, like an unshakeable whisper. He shook his head vigorously, trying to clear his mind, but the strange sensation lingered.
"Enough, Isabella. We need to leave now," he said in a low, impatient voice, laced with suppressed anger. "Did you hear me? We have to go! We can't reach the outpost; something's wrong, and the signal is terrible! Not to mention the people in the tent area—they might be in trouble too!"
Isabella's gaze remained steadfast, unfazed by Raymond's warning as if it meant nothing to her. The white light of the flashlight cast a pale and stern look on her face, yet it radiated an unwavering determination.
"We still have time," she replied, her tone tinged with anxiety and stubbornness. "We must delve deeper and find the purpose of our coming here. This isn't just an escape mission; we can't return empty-handed!"
Raymond rubbed his forehead in frustration, feeling as if something were tearing at his brain. "Isabella, damn it! What are you thinking?!" He pointed toward the tunnel behind him, raising his voice further. "Every step we take here is getting weirder! We can't even save our own lives; how can we think about Super Cell? Are you out of your mind?"
"I'm not out of my mind," Isabella retorted coldly. "You don't understand how significant this is for us."
"We can't reach the outpost," Raymond repeated, suppressing his anxiety and anger, his knuckles turning white around his gun. "Do you know what that means? Something unimaginable could be happening to Allison and the others. If we don't leave now, we won't be able to save them either!"
Jonas stood between them, trying to remain calm under the pressure, but Raymond's tone was spiraling out of control. He knew the situation was extremely dangerous. As the leader, he felt the tension and the brink of collapse within the team—Raymond was clearly more restless than he had anticipated.
Raymond stood there, eyes filled with anger and confusion as he stared at Jonas. They had fought side by side countless times, facing life-and-death situations together; their mutual understanding and trust had allowed them to escape time after time. Jonas was the only person Raymond unconditionally trusted, yet at this moment, that trust was shaken by Jonas's choices.
"What are you doing?" Raymond's voice was low and hoarse but brimming with suppressed fury. "Jonas, we've been through too many dangerous missions already, but this one is different. This place, these things—it's completely beyond our understanding! And you're choosing to stay here?"
Jonas took a deep breath; he knew Raymond's concerns were valid. This wasn't an ordinary expedition; it was a test of life and spirit. Yet Jonas's gaze remained resolute; he couldn't back down. "Raymond, I know you don't understand my decision, but I have to do this. It's my responsibility," he said slowly, his tone firm yet resigned.
"Responsibility?" Raymond shouted incredulously, disappointment etched across his face. "What kind of responsibility is this? Jonas, we should have left already! That damned Super Cell and these crazy experiments aren't worth you dying alongside this woman!" He angrily gestured toward Isabella. "She's completely lost her mind, and you're not far behind!"
Jonas did not turn back to look at Isabella. He knew that the decision he was making at this moment had nothing to do with her. It was his responsibility as the captain and a fulfillment of an inner commitment. "I understand what you're saying, Raymond. But I can't let her go down there alone. This isn't just her mission; it's mine too. She needs me."
"She needs you?" Raymond laughed incredulously, but his laughter was filled with bitterness and pain. "That woman has never cared about us! She only cares about herself, her plans, her ambitions! And you? Can't you see? You're willing to sacrifice all of us for her!" Raymond's tone was laced with disappointment for his friend; he felt he was losing Jonas, losing the meaning of their struggles together.
They had fought side by side, enduring the harshest trials of the battlefield. Jonas was Raymond's only trusted leader. But at this moment, that trust was shattered by a mad scientific experiment; Jonas no longer seemed like the steady, calm captain he once knew. The anger in Raymond could not be contained; he clenched his fists, wanting to shake this former friend awake.
"Raymond, I won't let you stay behind to bear the risk. This time, I will finish this with her." Jonas finally turned to look at Raymond, a hint of sadness in his eyes. He knew he was losing Raymond's trust, but he could not change this reality. "You take the others back and ensure everyone's safety."
Raymond's fist slammed against the stone wall beside him with a dull thud. His breathing became heavy, each word filled with anguish. "Jonas, do you know what this means? You will die here! We've been through so much together; I've always followed you because you could always make the right decisions. But this time—this time you're wrong!"
Jonas did not respond to Raymond's accusations; the turmoil and helplessness within him left him speechless. The silence between them grew heavier, as if the entire cave pressed down on their chests.
Raymond's gaze turned cold and sharp. "Fine, since you've made your decision, so be it." His voice was low, tinged with a chilling finality. "But remember, Jonas, this is your choice. I just hope you come out alive; don't make me regret not dragging you away." After saying this, Raymond turned and waved his hand at the remaining mercenaries, his voice carrying an undeniable command. "Let's go!"
Just as he turned to leave, Raymond paused for a moment and glanced back at Jonas—a look of pain and disappointment intertwined in his eyes, as if saying, "Goodbye, friend." He quickly led the mercenaries away, their footsteps echoing in the empty cave until they gradually faded.
Jonas watched Raymond's retreating figure, feeling a heavy pressure and helplessness in his heart. He knew that his choice might cost him the most trusted partner he had known for years, but it was a responsibility he had to bear. Isabella stood behind him, still resolute and persistent. In that moment, her determination intertwined with his heavy burden, filling Jonas with an unavoidable sense of mission.
