Everyone looked puzzled. How could the White Robed Man possibly be the Old Scholar?
The White Robed Man waved at me, signaling me to help him up. Jiyao said, "Hao, be careful."
"It's fine. He has never had any intention to harm me," I said as I stepped forward to assist the White Robed Man.
The White Robed Man looked at me and then at Yang Sanqian, saying, "With descendants like you in the Yang Family, the Old Man feels proud."
Yang Sanqian's face also showed sorrow as he asked, "What exactly is going on? You are the ancestor, Yang Kaishan?"
The White Robed Man weakly replied, "Yes and no."
"Are you a manifestation of One Qi Transforming into Three Purities?" I asked in confusion.
A hint of approval appeared in the White Robed Man's eyes. "You truly are extraordinary, knowing about One Qi Transforming into Three Purities. Indeed, the Old Scholar remains the Old Scholar. The black-robed man and I are manifestations produced from the first Daoist Arts he perfected a year ago. One Qi Transforming into Three Purities was created by Laozi Li Er. Once it is cast, it cannot be reversed; the manifestations are almost identical to the true self, possessing the same memories and Cultivation Method. The White Robe leans towards goodness, while the Black Robe represents evil."
Thousands of years ago, under the leadership of Laozi Li Er, the Daoist Sect rose to prominence. Li Er was renowned for his unparalleled achievements and was called Laozi by the world.
As the founder of the Daoist Sect, Laozi was not only eternally unmatched but also incredibly wise. He traveled across nations, comprehending the great principles of the world, ultimately writing the Tao Te Ching, which spread throughout society and educated countless beings.
After establishing the Daoist Sect, Laozi effectively opened a path for humanity to ascend to immortality. To this end, he sealed his insights into natural laws within an extraterrestrial stone known as the Martial Dao Classic.
However, despite being the founder of the Daoist Sect, Laozi was born in an era of great chaos among humanity when demons roamed freely. This period is referred to as ancient times.
During ancient times, Great Demons ran rampant, fierce beasts were everywhere, and humanity was weak, constantly fleeing from demon beasts' pursuit while gradually forming city-states and nations.
Originally a cowherd from the State of Chu, Laozi experienced immense suffering before reading countless books and becoming a disciple of a Refiner. He served as an official in Chu and traveled across nations to preach and teach while uniting with various states against demon beasts, gaining widespread fame.
At sixty years old, Laozi's cultivation method astonished both ghosts and deities; he could ascend during daylight and rise effortlessly through the clouds. He wielded his sword as he ventured deep into mountains, slaying countless demon beasts. Even ancient divine beasts like the Azure Dragon and Taotie could not escape his cleansing; he continued slaying while taking on disciples along his journey, becoming renowned far and wide. Countless ancient ferocious beasts lay dormant, unwilling to confront this mortal god of slaughter.
Humanity hailed him as a Saint; kings from various states united to honor Laozi Li Er as Taishang. National sages would also pay their respects to Laozi with reverence befitting a Saint.
After being conferred sainthood and establishing the Daoist Sect, Laozi devoted himself to studying the refining techniques passed down by Refiner. The Daoist Sect spread its teachings across nations as Laozi outlined numerous methods for refining qi. The Daoist Arts included Cultivation Methods, medical secrets, and talismans compiled into a single work known as the Dao Jing.
Once the Dao Jing emerged and became widely disseminated among people for all to practice, it brought forth even greater calamities.
Laozi exterminated demon beasts and founded the Daoist Sect while writing both the Dao Jing and Tao Te Ching with intentions to educate beings against formidable foes so that common people could live prosperous lives. However, he did not foresee that rulers would propagate Daoism solely to strengthen their armies and dominate other nations.
Nations swallowed nations, nations devoured city-states, city-states oppressed the common people, and the common people turned against each other.
Countless lives perished tragically, and beasts were hunted to extinction. In just a few decades, the Daoist Sect reached its peak; anyone could learn the Dao, and everywhere was filled with the Dao. Countless Daoist Sects rose during that era, and it was common for those in the Mahayana Realm to be merely thirty years old. At that time, the Dao Fruit Realm was feared by all, for everyone would produce Dao Fruits within themselves. The Dao Fruit was the essence of a cultivator's being, and consuming it could grant Divine Abilities.
The human race slaughtered one another as various sects emerged. Laozi traveled through the world, feeling sorrowful in his heart. He announced a revision of the Dao Jing, improving upon the flaws of the Dao Fruit Realm. No one was allowed to privately transmit the original text; otherwise, they would face death without mercy. Yet disputes continued unabated and escalated.
In his later years, Laozi felt increasingly powerless. At this time, ancient Refiner masters and some hidden Great Demons emerged, while countless powerful figures from the Daoist Sect also rose to prominence. Chaos ensued as members of the Daoist Sect invaded royal powers across nations, placing divine authority above imperial rule.
Some rising experts from the Mahayana Realm and Tribulation Realm challenged Laozi's disciples for glory in victory until a self-proclaimed demon appeared, defeating all of Laozi's disciples. This caused great turmoil as he sought to transform the Daoist Sect into a demonic sect and challenged Laozi himself. Although Laozi emerged victorious, he was wounded. Later, surrounded by demons attacking the Dao Ancestor's gates, Laozi watched in despair as his own creation—the Daoist Sect—was on the verge of being destroyed after a century of development. With a heavy heart, he unleashed his long-contemplated Daoist Arts: One Qi Transforming into Three Purities.
Once One Qi Transforming into Three Purities was activated, one person became three; the other two possessed identical memories to the original body. However, one inclined towards good while the other leaned towards evil. Initially controlled by the original body, they eventually developed independently as no one wished to be under another's control.
The three versions of Laozi severely injured the demonic sects; no one could withstand them as they exterminated countless demons without anyone daring to resist.
Fortunately, when Laozi established One Qi Transforming into Three Purities, he was already one hundred sixty years old. Three years later, on a clear morning, Laozi ascended to heaven. A few days later, the other two versions of him also vanished from the world. Thus began the widespread legend of the Three Pure Ones: Yuqing Primordial Sovereign, Supreme Spirit Treasure Master, and Supreme Purity Taoist Virtue. No one knew who their original body was; however, Laozi became known as the Supreme Old Lord.
In the Dao Jing, Laozi categorized the realms of Daoist practitioners into Nine Major Realms: Refining Qi, Purple Qi Coming from the East, Foundation Establishment, Spirit Transformation, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, Dao Fruit, Mahayana, and finally Transcending Tribulation. Except for him, no one in later generations could survive the Nine Thunder Tribulation. Historical records of all Daoist Sects noted that those who dared to attempt Transcending Tribulation were renowned figures of their time; none survived—every attempt ended in death and obliteration.
Later on, seeing humanity's excessive greed, some claimed that Laozi did not leave behind methods for Transcending Tribulation. The Martial Dao Classic he established had never led anyone to enlightenment in subsequent generations. As for One Qi Transforming into Three Purities, it was destroyed when he departed from this world. This divine technique could only be used once in a lifetime but was too perilous; an unintentional mistake could lead to great chaos.
Throughout his life, Laozi had seventy-two disciples among whom two were particularly famous: Taiyi and Queen Mother of the West. These two became revered ancestors worshipped by Serpent Cult and Yaochi respectively.
Laozi achieved remarkable accomplishments throughout his life without ever tasting defeat; his only mistake was placing too much trust in human nature.
Human nature is unpredictable; even as an Ancestor of the Daoist Sect, he could not grasp it.
After White Robed Man finished speaking, he looked at Yang Sanqian and said: "In those days, another version of me overly revered martial power and orchestrated the Death and Life Register Incident that caused you harm. I feel deeply ashamed."
Everyone fell silent, unsure how to respond. Although this person possessed all of Old Scholar's memories, he ultimately embodied a benevolent spirit—he could be seen as another individual entirely.
Finally, White Robed Man turned to Guo Daozhen and said: "Daozhen, I feel remorseful towards you; at present I cannot even move to bow my head in apology."
Upon hearing White Robed Man's words, Guo Daozhen froze momentarily. For so many years he had sought revenge against Old Scholar; though this person was not Old Scholar himself, he had completely inherited Old Scholar's memories. Yet this person's heart leaned towards goodness and his cultivation method was upright; just one apology made Guo Daozhen tremble within.
White Robed Man then looked at me softly and said: "Daring to attempt the Dao truly reflects my descendant Yang Kaishan's spirit; I cannot assist you directly but can only pray for you in spirit."
As White Robed Man spoke these words, he infused his last trace of Dao Qi into my body—righteous energy surged forth striking at my Nascent Soul’s surface injuries. Although cracks on my Nascent Soul’s surface did not heal completely, I felt somewhat more relaxed and less tormented than before.
The life essence of the Old Scholar dissipated, and he took his last breath. The Dao Body shattered, transforming into Lightfeather, which floated gently, scattering in all directions across the mortal realm.
The Supreme fell, turning into Lightfeather, like spring flowers withering, evoking a sense of sorrow.
Meanwhile, the Emei disciples wept, surrounding Miao Shengnan.
Miao Shengnan sat among them and said, "Since the founding of the sect by the White-Browed Ancestor, the Western Sichuan Emei has stood firm within the Daoist Sect for generations. The Arched Eyebrows cannot perish by my hand. Bai Xiaoxiang, from this day forth, you are the Nineteenth Generation Sect Leader of the Emei Sect. Accept the Token."
As she spoke, Miao Shengnan held the Washing Flower Sword in both hands and presented it before Bai Xiaoxiang.
Bai Xiaoxiang's eyes were red as she accepted the Washing Flower Sword and softly called out, "Master."
All the Emei disciples knelt on the ground. Miao Shengnan looked at Rouer and beckoned her to come closer.
"Rouer, come here. The Sect Master Uncle has something to say to you."
