Human Sacrifice
Huang Laohu was taken aback by Elder Hong's words, then knelt down and said, "Elder Hong, I have worked diligently in the Water Storage Room for so many years. I may not have made any contributions, but I have certainly endured hardships. Are you really going to let me die because of the words of this mysterious woman?"
Elder Hong sighed and replied, "Some people are beyond your reach for a lifetime. You have never even seen this person in the sect, but I am not afraid to shatter your illusions. Everyone in the Water Storage Room is laboring for that person."
I stepped forward and asked, "Elder Hong, are you saying that all of us in the Water Storage Room work day and night just to satisfy that esteemed individual watching the waterfall on the mountain?"
Elder Hong said, "Exactly. Otherwise, do you think the Azure Cloud Sect would entrust you with the problem of drinking water? You truly lack self-awareness."
"Elder Hong, Elder Hong, please spare my life. Considering how obedient I have been over the years, even if I were a dog, wouldn't you hesitate to kill me?" Huang Laohu crawled closer to Elder Hong as he pleaded.
Elder Hong replied, "I won't kill you; you can end it yourself."
With that, Elder Hong turned and descended the mountain.
"Elder Hong, spare my life! I have discovered someone hoarding a precious treasure—this kind of medicine has miraculous effects for healing!" Huang Laohu exclaimed while holding up a vial.
"That might save your life," Elder Hong said without looking back. He clearly did not take Huang Laohu's words seriously.
Huang Laohu's expression turned fierce. He quietly drew a whip from his waist and suddenly charged at Elder Hong, shouting, "Old man, I'll make you pay!"
"Bold!" two Dao Children shouted in unison. One pointed a finger at Huang Laohu's abdomen while the other struck him with a palm, sending him flying several meters away into the crowd, where he landed convulsing.
The Dao Child named Brother Ma remarked, "A mere Entry-Level Realm waste dares to offend our master? I'll shatter your Qi Sea and see how you continue to struggle."
Everyone was astonished that the once arrogant Huang Laohu was so easily defeated before two children.
The Dao Child turned to me and said, "That esteemed person just appointed you to be in charge of the Water Storage Room from now on. I seem to have some impression of you; what was your name again?"
I replied, "In response to Brother Ma, my name is Yang Hao."
The Dao Child nodded and said, "From now on, you will be the head here. Yellow Tiger has had his Qi Sea destroyed by me and is essentially useless. Handle him as you see fit; killing someone like that brings bad luck. Just do your job well and don't let me down."
Without even glancing at the others, the Dao Child left.
"From now on, Brother Yang Hao is the new boss of the Water Storage Room!" Three Sons shouted, and everyone cheered in response.
I shook my head and glanced at Huang Laohu, who lay on the ground unable to move. "Tie him up and execute him tomorrow morning when we start working."
After that, I walked into the large dormitory. My room had been burned down, so I could only sleep on the Room Manager's bed.
Zhu Cong ran over to me, calling out "Brother Hao" as he tried to ingratiate himself, helping me tidy up the bed. Once he finished, I told him to step aside and sat down on the bed to begin meditating.
I had expected to face a fierce battle, but I never anticipated such an ending.
All of us in the Water Storage Room were busy not for the Azure Cloud Sect but merely to supply water for that unfamiliar woman's artificial waterfall. It felt ridiculous.
More than anything, it was tragic.
It was tragic that Jiang Yang was killed by me, that the Room Manager was thrown to death by Huang Laohu. The once-mighty Huang Laohu was nothing before the elders; he was even less than a dog. His cultivation was utterly crushed before the two Dao Children, and he was rendered powerless without understanding how it happened.
I had successfully become the boss of the Water Storage Room, yet my mood was even more somber. On one hand, Rabbit Dies, Fox Feels Sad; on the other hand were the words of that Red-Clad Woman—looking down on everyone as if they were ants. Killing a long-standing leader of the Water Storage Room wasn't just a whim; she didn't care who was in charge—she only cared whether her waterfall could continue to flow.
After everyone returned to the dormitory and fell asleep that night, I took out the Qi Gathering Pill I had obtained. Initially, I planned to consume it before confronting Huang Laohu, but fearing unforeseen circumstances, I decided against it. Now, sitting in meditation with my eyes closed, I swallowed it.
The Qi Gathering Pill quickly dissolved, and soon its medicinal power spread throughout my body. I sensed the incredibly thin Spirit Energy in the surrounding air, while the potency from the pill surged through my Meridians, far stronger than any Dao Qi I had cultivated. It coursed through my limbs and bones, expanding my blocked Meridians.
When I opened my eyes again, it was already the next morning, and the room was empty. Zhu Cong stood nearby, nodding and bowing as he said, "Brother Hao, everyone is waiting outside."
I nodded and got up to head out. The people from the Water Storage Room stood neatly in front of the door, as if awaiting my inspection.
The motivational speech I had prepared and the reprimand for Huang Laohu after defeating him were no longer on my mind. At that moment, Huang Laohu was tied to a tree stump, his face covered in blood, barely clinging to life after being beaten by countless people who secretly hated him.
I approached Huang Laohu, who lifted his head and said, "You won. I didn't expect to fall into your hands."
I asked, "Did you kill someone named Wang Hai before?"
"Do you know him?" Huang Laohu replied.
"Yes," I said. "I came to Azure Cloud Sect at someone else's request to investigate his whereabouts."
Huang Laohu said, "He was unruly and dared to openly confront me like you do. However, that night he was drowned by my men in the reservoir at the foot of the mountain and then dismembered and buried. It was a gruesome end."
"Then I have nothing more to say."
Huang Laohu asked weakly, "Before I die, I want to know what kind of person you really are."
"I'm just an ordinary person who grew up in the mountains; nothing more," I replied as I stepped back. Then I called out to everyone, "You should retaliate against Huang Laohu just as he bullied you. From now on, each person will only need to carry 100 buckets of water to finish their shift. Those who work quickly can complete it in half the time and won't have to work at night. Zhu Cong and Three Sons will be responsible for recording how much each person has done."
The crowd cheered. As they rushed towards Huang Laohu, by the time they dispersed, he was already unrecognizable, his flesh torn apart beyond measure.
I glanced at Three Sons and Zhu Cong and said, "You two will take care of the Water Storage Room. I won’t pursue what you’ve done for me in secret. But don’t let those above hold this place accountable; otherwise, before I am killed, you will surely die first. From now on, I will enter seclusion to cultivate my energy, so do not disturb me. Also, bury Huang Laohu's body."
Three Sons and Zhu Cong looked delighted and nodded repeatedly in agreement as I turned and walked toward Huang Laohu's residence.
Last night, after taking the Qi Gathering Pill, the Dao Qi within me was ten times stronger than what I had cultivated myself, and my cultivation speed increased significantly. However, once the effects wore off, my progress slowed down again.
Huang Laohu had accumulated so many Qi Gathering Pills that he couldn’t possibly use them all at once. In his residence, I found no less than a hundred Qi Gathering Pills—leftovers from his monthly consumption.
Having stayed in the Entry-Level Realm for twenty years, he must have become nearly immune to the effects of these Qi Gathering Pills. That was why he had amassed such a large quantity without using them.
Huang Laohu had also collected several pieces of Spirit Energy stones in his home. Although I didn’t know their purpose, sitting among these stones could enhance one’s sensitivity to surrounding Spirit Energy. After consuming the second Qi Gathering Pill, warmth spread through my Dantian as Dao Qi surged violently, crashing through my Meridians. I felt all the Acupoints in my body opening up, frantically absorbing the medicinal power. The Dao Qi transformed from a thread into a strand and then into a stream. I gradually adapted to this cultivation speed until a gentle flow emerged within me.
Looking at the empty plate before me, I realized that all the hundred or so Qi Gathering Pills had been consumed. My hand rotated slightly, and the empty plate flew into my palm.
"Late Stage of Qi Entry Realm doesn’t seem too difficult," I murmured to myself as I stepped out of the room.
The leaves on the trees had fallen completely, and the air had grown increasingly cold. As I reached the base of the water tower, I saw Three Sons and Zhu Cong directing everyone in their tasks. Their hands were freezing as they breathed warm air onto them. Upon seeing me approach, they hurried over to greet me.
"Brother Hao! You finally emerged from seclusion!" Zhu Cong exclaimed.
"I hope nothing went wrong while I was in seclusion?" I asked.
"No, everyone understands your intentions well; they’ve been particularly diligent with their work and even found time to cultivate their Dao Qi," Three Sons replied.
I nodded and asked, "How much time did I spend in seclusion this time?"
Zhu Cong replied, "Just one day short of a whole month. Tomorrow is the day for distributing Silver Coins and Qi Gathering Pills. During this time, the two Managers from the Miscellaneous Room came looking for you, but I and the Three Sons turned them away."
I acknowledged this, surprised that my seclusion had lasted an entire month. During this time, I had neither eaten nor drunk anything; I had only absorbed the Spirit Energy from the Qi Gathering Pills to sustain myself. Feeling hungry now, I asked the Three Sons to prepare some food for me.
After sitting still for a month, I was disheveled, with unkempt hair and a scruffy beard, and my clothes had developed an unpleasant odor. When I finished bathing and changed into fresh clothes, everyone looked at me in astonishment.
Seeing my inquiry, the Three Sons said, "Brother Hao, how have you become so much younger?"
I wasn't sure if it was due to taking large amounts of Millennium Medicine King Ointment or if my cultivation had made a sudden leap forward. Regardless of the reason—perhaps from consuming too many Qi Gathering Pills—my once white hair had vanished, and my skin had smoothed out, restoring my original appearance.
I brushed off their curiosity with a casual excuse, and they didn't dare to press further. The next morning, everyone lined up as the two Managers from the Miscellaneous Room walked up from the mountain with difficult expressions. Upon seeing me, they looked quite displeased. I glanced at the Fat Steward and said, "Oh, your leg seems to be healing quite well!"
The two Managers' faces darkened. After distributing the Silver Coins and Qi Gathering Pills, they said, "Yang Hao, don’t think that just because you’re the head of the Water Storage Room we’re afraid of you. Soon enough, people from the Outer Sect will come to deal with you."
I smiled and replied, "You don’t need to bother finding anyone. Just inform the Manager of the Outer Sect that I, Yang Hao, want to enter the Outer Sect."
At this statement, everyone gasped in surprise. The Thin Steward looked at me in disbelief and asked, "You want to challenge the Outer Sect and become an Outer Sect Disciple?"
