I finished reading the report and calmly retorted, "Fu Jing, are you sure the evidence is real?"
"What do you mean?" Fu Jing frowned.
"As a housewife without any source of income, where would I get the money to buy pesticide?"
"Besides, I take care of my mother-in-law every day. When would I have the time to buy pesticide?"
"The so-called evidence you have is nothing but a deliberate forgery."
Fu Jing was so agitated that he jumped up, gripping the report tightly as if he wanted to crush it.
Seeing him like this made me chuckle. He really was getting into his role.
"Fu Jing, don't take yourself too seriously."
I picked up the report and lightly dusted it off.
"Your mother didn't commit suicide at all. Have you forgotten that recording?"
"That voice was clearly someone impersonating her."
"Stop playing the victim here."
Fu Jing was so enraged that he almost laughed; he raised his hand to hit me but was stopped by the police.
"Zhao Yuan, say that again!"
"You malicious woman, you use your wicked thoughts to judge others. Do you think everyone is like you?"
"You took my mother's Social Security Card to buy pesticide, intending to harm her."
"Zhao Yuan, you truly have a heart of stone."
"I had no idea about your plan; otherwise, I definitely wouldn't have let you succeed!"
I looked up and caught sight of the camera in the corner. Fu Jing really knows how to put on a show, but since he wants to act, I'll play along for a while.
"Fu Jing, stop acting. Don't you just want your mother-in-law dead?"
"Why don't you go commit suicide now and apologize to her?"
I spoke calmly, without any emotion. The police, seeing our heightened emotions, separated us. They went to investigate the transaction details of my mother-in-law's Social Security Card. But they were destined to find nothing because I had never used that card.
Fu Jing was growing anxious in the police station, getting up one moment and sitting down the next.
"Officer, it's been so long; why is there still no result?"
"Do you even know how to handle a case? If you can't, I'll go find your superior!"
He complained restlessly. I took a sip of tea and said lightly, "Fu Jing, why are you in such a hurry?"
"Aren't you convinced that I'm the one who killed your mother-in-law?"
"What's wrong? Are you feeling guilty?"
Fu Jing shot me a glare. "Zhao Yuan, don't get too smug too soon."
"Even if you've spent money to erase the transaction records, that recording is enough to convict you!"
I laughed. "Fu Jing, are you sure that's your mother-in-law's voice?"
"Don't forget, she can no longer speak."
"That autopsy report was forged by you, wasn't it?"
Fu Jing slammed the table and shouted, "Zhao Yuan, stop spouting nonsense here!"
"Officer, don't listen to her lies; she is the murderer!"
The police looked at us and said in a deep voice, "Mr. Fu, please calm down."
"The autopsy results show that your mother's throat was unable to produce sound, so that recording cannot be used as evidence."
"What?" Fu Jing was taken aback.
I raised an eyebrow, surprised that my guess had turned out to be correct.
"But... but there were indeed fingerprints of Zhao Yuan found on the pesticide bottle!"
"She must have done something while feeding my mother!"
I scoffed lightly, "Fu Jing, are you confused?"
"I take care of my mother-in-law every day; if I had poisoned the food, the poison should have remained on the lunchbox and my cooking utensils."
"But you ate it; how come you're fine?"
Fu Jing was left speechless by my question, stammering for a long time without being able to respond.
