I instinctively tightened my body, spreading my hands to warm them by the fire.
A cold gust of wind swept through, and I cursed inwardly. I stood up and looked around, but seeing nothing unusual, I sat back down.
Suddenly, a whooping sound echoed in the air, startling me into standing up. The whooping changed, morphing into a howl...
Oh no! It was the call of a brown bear.
Da Shu quickly emerged from the tent, and I woke up Fat Ma and Mud Man.
The grass and trees shook violently, and soon a brown bear appeared in our line of sight.
"This is an adult brown bear; be careful," Da Shu warned.
With a loud roar, the bear charged at us. I couldn't dodge in time, but Mud Man grabbed me just as I stumbled. I fell but quickly got back on my feet, facing the bear.
My heart sank in fear. Without thinking, I kicked the bear hard and took off running while it was still stunned.
But unexpectedly, the bear came crashing down on me like a mountain. It knocked me to the ground with a heavy thud. I felt the air leave my lungs and coughed up blood.
Damn it! I thought, hoping I hadn't broken any bones. I tried to struggle free, but it was futile. My hands pressed against the ground had gone numb.
Just then, a gunshot rang out, and the bear released me, getting back on its feet. Fat Ma's shotgun was still smoking.
The bear let out a roar that echoed through the night before charging after Fat Ma, who yelped and ran away.
I struggled to get up, and only then did I feel a sharp pain in my hand. I gritted my teeth and endured it.
When I looked up, I saw Fat Ma climbing a tree.
I felt anxious and cursed him; climbing a tree like that was just asking for trouble against a bear!
Ignoring the pain in my hand, I shouted, "Fat Ma, don't climb the tree!"
Upon hearing my words, Fat Ma let go of the tree and yelled back, "Why didn't you say so earlier, Old Sun?"
The pain intensified, and beads of sweat formed on my forehead as the Mud Man rushed over to help Fat Ma.
I glanced at the big tree, unsure when that guy had disappeared.
With no other choice, I ran up too. Fat Ma shouted, "Mud Man, distract it! I have a gun!" The Mud Man immediately picked up a thick branch and swung with all his might, smashing it down onto the brown bear.
The bear turned around and let out a roar but ignored him, continuing to chase after Fat Ma.
Fat Ma cursed, "Dead Mud Man, have you eaten today?"
The bear stood up in anger, its claws raking across Fat Ma's back. He let out a scream as several red gashes appeared on his skin.
With no other option, the Mud Man chased after them. I picked up a stone and quickly followed suit. Aiming carefully, I threw it at the bear's back.
This time, the bear was truly enraged. It turned around just in time to spot the Mud Man, who hadn’t anticipated the bear’s sudden attack and tried to flee.
But he couldn't escape the bear's strike and was knocked down to the ground.
I stepped forward and grabbed the Mud Man, who took the opportunity to get up, wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, and ran off cursing, "Damn it! I fell for their trick!"
Feeling embarrassed, I said, "I threw a stone at him just now!"
The Mud Man was momentarily speechless upon hearing the reason.
Fat Ma shouted from behind, "Nice job, Mud Man!"
The Mud Man, furious, spat out a mouthful of blood. At that moment, we had become brothers in misfortune.
Suddenly, Fat Ma launched a surprise attack from behind. A gunshot shattered the night sky, and the back of the brown bear was torn open. Fat Ma's triumphant laughter echoed as it seemed that the shotgun was indeed useful.
The brown bear staggered a few steps, nearly falling over. Fat Ma shone his flashlight on the bear and muttered, "Not good," before running away immediately.
Surprisingly, the brown bear did not pursue Fat Ma but continued towards me and the Mud Man.
The Mud Man and I exchanged glances and started running again.
The speed of the brown bear was not to be underestimated; we were completely being chased down.
I couldn't take it anymore! My hand hurt so much that I felt weak all over.
At that moment, Fat Ma's frantic screams reached us.
When Fat Ma fired again, the brown bear surprisingly dodged.
Fat Ma's eyes nearly popped out in shock, and the Mud Man and I were equally astonished.
"Run!" I shouted as I finally realized the situation.
The two of them snapped out of their daze, but Fat Ma didn't flee. Seizing the opportunity, he fired another shot. The brown bear seemed to sense the danger and dodged as soon as it saw Fat Ma raise his gun.
Mud Man and I took the chance to move over to Fat Ma's side.
Fat Ma grinned proudly and said to me, "Old Sun, just watch me now."
Although the brown bear was scared, it didn't run away. It kept growling and making noise.
Ignoring everything else, Fat Ma fired again, but missed completely.
He muttered, "Mistake, mistake! Still not as good as the M11 Submachine Gun!" He fired again, "Damn it, why isn't it firing?"
Fat Ma's expression changed as Mud Man and I realized something was wrong—he was out of bullets. While Fat Ma was still fiddling with the shotgun, I urged him to run as the brown bear was closing in. In his panic, Fat Ma slipped and dropped the shotgun on the ground.
"Don't pick it up," I called out.
With no other choice, Fat Ma started running.
The injured brown bear spotted the shotgun on the ground and picked it up. In a fit of rage, it snapped the shotgun in half.
Fat Ma glanced back and sighed, "So strong."
After venting its anger on the broken shotgun, the bear's hatred shifted back to us.
I felt a chill run down my spine; my hand had just been crushed. If it got hold of me now, it would likely be more than just a broken hand.
The Mud Man had sustained internal injuries, while Fat Ma had likely only suffered some superficial wounds.
As we ran, Fat Ma asked, "Where's that kid, Da Shu?"
I replied, "I don't know where he went."
Fat Ma cursed under his breath, "Son of a dog!"
I struggled to keep up with them when suddenly a burning pain shot through my back. I turned to look and felt a jolt of fear as I saw the claws of the grizzly bear just grazing my skin.
I had once again earned myself a glorious injury. This couldn't go on! We were going to be worn out. The grizzly bear seemed oblivious to fatigue, its eyes clouded by hatred, I thought to myself.
I shouted, "Let's split up and run!"
Since Fat Ma was sandwiched between us, after Mud Man and I dispersed, only Fat Ma was left running alone.
My intention was to distract the bear, but I hadn't expected it to be so single-minded, fixated solely on Fat Ma.
Fat Ma complained bitterly about our betrayal.
At that moment, I heard Da Shu's voice calling out to draw the bear toward me.
Following the sound, I spotted a flashlight beam shining from a tree about one hundred meters away from us.
I yelled, "Fatty, lure it toward the light!"
Fat Ma shouted back in panic, "Where's the light?"
I pointed behind you, and as I spoke, Fat Ma let out another scream; a gash had been torn into his backside by a brown bear.
"Today is just my luck!" Fat Ma complained, one hand clutching his rear as he circled around a large tree and came back.
I led the way for the hefty man towards the light.
At that moment, I was in excruciating pain, my palms slick with cold sweat. The tension in my mind only made my body feel weaker.
Suddenly, I couldn't hold on any longer and collapsed to the ground.
The Mud Man stopped, pulled me up, and helped me move forward.
Fat Ma caught up with us then and shouted, "Mud Man, put Old Sun on my back!"
As Fat Ma passed us, he scooped me up and placed me on his back. He then ran with all his might; the light was just ahead when he stumbled and fell at a critical moment.
I tumbled off his back, a sharp pain radiating through me. The Mud Man steadied me, and gritting my teeth, I stood up again. The pain intensified, but it also sparked a surge of strength within me.
Fat Ma's physical condition was much better than mine; after a bit of struggle, he got back on his feet.
