Fat Ma was stuck outside, anxiously shouting, "Old Sun, you mustn't do anything foolish. Even if you don't care about yourself, think about Hilly Big Sister."
I hesitated for a moment before yelling back, " Fat Ma, stop talking nonsense!"
Upon hearing my response, Fat Ma laughed and said, "Old Sun, you finally see reason!"
I didn't reply and pushed forward a bit more.
The Mud Man asked me seriously, "Are you really going in?"
I nodded.
He followed up with another question, "What are you going in for? We usually do this to seek profit and avoid danger."
I couldn't answer him right away. But I still wanted to see what 'it' was. I had nearly been killed by it several times and still didn't know who the real culprit was.
I answered him with my actions as I moved forward.
The Mud Man realized he couldn't stop me and said, "Then I'll go with you."
"No way. It's dangerous ahead. If we both squeeze in, it will be hard to maneuver. You just stay outside and support me," I said in one breath.
The Mud Man didn't insist anymore. Knowing that it feared light, he prepared a flare.
I began to move forward. It was only a distance of one or two meters, but in the cramped and low space, combined with my nervousness, my movements were very slow.
I kept my finger firmly on the trigger of the Submachine Gun, thinking that as soon as it appeared, I would fire immediately.
Hmm, I could stand up now, within a meter of that wall. The walls were covered in cobwebs, and there were many shriveled corpses of dead mice scattered on the ground, along with other creatures that thrived in the darkness—cockroaches, grasshoppers, and the like.
A stench of decay lingered in the air, making it hard to breathe.
My heart raced tightly; could it be...
I suddenly looked up, but all I saw was darkness. The visibility range of the Searchlight had blurred above, unable to reach any end.
I exhaled, trying to make some noise. If all went as expected, it was definitely hiding above.
I kicked the wall a few times to create a commotion.
Upon hearing the noise, the Mud Man asked me what was happening.
"Nothing," I replied.
I continued to make noise, banging the butt of my gun against the wall, creating a rhythmic thudding sound.
Yet above me, that pitch-black space remained utterly silent.
I stopped my actions and glanced up again. Suddenly, I felt a chill on the back of my hand. I hurriedly looked down and saw a droplet of liquid that resembled spit. I wiped it away; it was somewhat sticky.
"Did you see that?" the Mud Man shouted at that moment.
I was distracted, glancing outside when suddenly, the Fur wrapped around my face. I had no time to react; I pulled the trigger and fired upward. Perhaps the bullet sparked as it shot out, and to my shock, the Fur caught fire, retracting like tentacles from my face.
Soon, a scream echoed through the air. This scream was different from those made by the Zongzi and Face-Eating Monkey; it resembled a human's cry of pain—ah! It sounded almost like that of an adult man.
I pressed tightly against the wall, a strong smell of burning flesh filling the air as the flaming Fur continued to fall, sparks scattering everywhere.
The Mud Man shouted for me to get out quickly.
But I ignored him. Things had reached this point; the truth was about to reveal itself. No matter what happened, I wouldn’t retreat. After a moment, the flames dimmed slightly. It was then that I reminded myself to look up; astonishingly, it had extinguished the fire on its own.
A face illuminated by the red glow caught my eye, and my first impression was one of age—so old that I couldn't find words to describe it.
The second feeling was a sense of dread that traveled from the tips of my nerves down to my toes. It glanced at me with what seemed like resentment but was too preoccupied with putting out the fire.
I began to back away when something fell from above, landing right in front of me. I bent down to pick it up as a sharp sound continued to ring out, and the flames went out.
Suddenly, it seemed to stir. I immediately crawled outside and shouted, "Mud Man, run!"
The Mud Man hadn’t moved after I got out. I urged him anxiously, "What are you waiting for? Get back!"
Once I was out, he quickly tossed a flare inside and said, "Buy us some time to escape." With that, he hurriedly crawled out after me.
The flare lasted about a minute before it extinguished.
After crawling for several more minutes, I could vaguely see Fat Ma's figure in the distance.
Suddenly, I felt something grab my foot. I turned around and was instantly struck by a chill; its skin was shriveled and wrinkled all over, as if its entire body had withered away.
Its eyes bulged out, staring at me intensely. I struggled hard, and surprisingly, I managed to break free. Its grip wasn't very strong.
The mud figure had already crawled out. It was still pursuing me relentlessly. As we neared the exit, I shouted, "Fat Ma, pull me up!" I reached my hand out.
Upon hearing my call, Fat Ma immediately grabbed my hand and pulled me with all his might, dragging me out along with that ghastly creature.
"Damn!" Fat Ma cursed as he raised his gun. When the creature saw the gun barrel pointed at it, it recoiled instantly, moving with astonishing speed. Fat Ma fired a volley of bullets into the interior. Afterward, he blew on the muzzle and muttered, "Looking for death."
However, it seemed that none of the shots hit their mark because the creature was indeed quite strange. It resembled a human in some way; that thought flashed through my mind.
I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead and gasped for breath. "We shouldn't linger here; let's head down first!" I urged them.
Fat Ma insisted on being the last to descend. "If it dares to show its face again, I'll take care of it."
The mud figure slid down the rope first, followed by me and then Fat Ma.
Once we were all down, we exchanged glances. "What did you see?" Fat Ma asked me.
I replied, "It was a terrifying face; honestly... I don't know how to describe it exactly. It looked somewhat human..."
As soon as I finished speaking, both of them stared at me in horror, their faces clearly expressing disbelief.
"Maybe it didn't look like that," I quickly retracted my statement.
"Fat Ma" pressed on, "So, does it look like him or not?"
After a moment, I replied, "I don't know."
"Fat Ma" had no choice but to drop the subject. Suddenly, I remembered that I had picked something up earlier in the chaos and had hastily stuffed it into my pocket. I took it out, realizing that I hadn't examined it closely before; now I looked at it intently.
As the object came into view, all three of us were stunned. Especially "Fat Ma," who snatched it from my hand and muttered under his breath, "Old Sun, this thing belongs to its rightful owner."
I remained silent, tacitly agreeing.
This was the Oracle Bone that I had pulled from that suit of armor. "Fat Ma" placed the Oracle Bone back into his pocket.
I had looked at it briefly before but hadn’t noticed anything significant. However, this Oracle Bone had previously been taken by "Brother Jiang." Could it be that "Brother Jiang" had met with misfortune?
"Fat Ma" said, "That guy must have gotten his comeuppance."
I couldn't deny this; if I had faced that cursed object alone, the chances of death would have been over ninety percent—if not certain death. Thankfully, there were three of us, and our firepower was decent enough to narrowly escape.
We had seen "Brother Jiang's" skills before, but encountering this thing could easily lead to trouble for him!
At that moment, the clay figure spoke up, "He definitely hasn't run into any trouble." Then he asked me, "Did you find any bodies inside?" I shook my head.
"So that means after a fierce struggle, 'Brother Jiang' managed to escape," I continued along with the clay figure's line of thought.
