The person serving food was a very beautiful woman. Wang Niu was momentarily stunned, and confusion arose in his heart. He looked around and realized that everyone eating here was either an old man or an old woman; there wasn't a single young man in sight. This made him even more puzzled, as the place felt incredibly strange.
A sudden impulse to leave this place surged within Wang Niu.
"Little brother, what would you like to eat?" A pleasant female voice reached him.
Wang Niu snapped back to reality and replied to the attractive woman before him, "I... I don't know. Why are you here?"
Curiously, he asked the woman, but her expression changed dramatically, seemingly displeased. Wang Niu was taken aback; he couldn't understand what had gone wrong. Had he said something inappropriate?
Just then, Old Li's voice called out, "Hurry up and get your food; there are important matters waiting for you."
Wang Niu had no choice but to follow Old Li's instructions and quickly got his meal. However, as he prepared to leave the serving area, the woman quietly grabbed his hand, pressing it down. He noticed her mouth moving as if she were trying to say something, but no sound came out.
This struck Wang Niu as odd. He looked at her with a puzzled expression, wondering what she was trying to convey.
At that moment, Wang Niu suddenly felt a strange sensation in his heart. He glanced down and saw that the woman had slipped a small note into his hand.
Surprised, he looked back at her before taking a seat in front of Old Li with his tray.
Old Li's gaze was fixed on him, making Wang Niu feel somewhat guilty. Did Old Li see the interaction between him and the woman? Just as he was about to speak, he noticed Old Li glance at the woman serving food before shifting his attention back to him and asking, "Do you know where that woman comes from?"
Wang Niu was taken aback by Old Li's question and felt confused. He couldn't understand why Old Li was speaking so seriously about the woman.
Seeing that Wang Niu seemed distracted, Old Li scolded him sternly, "What are you thinking? I'm talking to you seriously, yet you act like a mute!"
This was the first time Old Li had spoken to him like this.
Feeling embarrassed, Wang Niu lowered his head and quickly apologized.
Old Li sighed as he looked at him. "I'm not trying to scold you on purpose; I'm doing this for your own good. You still don't understand the ways of this place. Since Old Chen recommended me to you and entrusted you to me, I must treat you well and not betray Old Chen's trust. Everything I say is for your benefit. Remember not to trust anyone here too easily, especially women; otherwise, you'll get into big trouble."
Old Li's expression was very serious, and Wang Niu remained silent as he focused on eating from his plate. After a while, when they were finishing their meal and about to set their trays aside, the woman appeared again and subtly gestured towards Wang Niu.
Wang Niu paused for a moment; he understood what the gesture meant—she was warning him to be careful.
But careful of what?
Moreover, since he didn't know her at all, why would she hint at such things?
Wang Niu felt perplexed as he followed Old Li out of the place.
They walked into the Funeral Home, and as before, Wang Niu felt a strange sensation. Old Li led him into a changing room filled with white clothing. Old Li casually handed him a white outfit and told him to put it on.
Wang Niu was taken aback; this was the first time he realized that one wore white clothes in a Funeral Home.
However, he was self-aware enough to understand that since Old Li asked him to wear it, he should comply to avoid upsetting him.
After getting dressed, Old Li suddenly said to him, "Wait here for a moment; I need to take care of something."
Wang Niu nodded, watching Old Li's retreating figure. Suddenly, he remembered the note the woman had slipped him earlier.
For some reason, his curiosity surged intensely at that moment. He quickly pulled the note from his pocket. At that instant, his heart raced with anxiety, and even his breathing became rapid.
He slowly unfolded the note in his hand.
Inside were a few lines: "Be careful of those around you."
Wang Niu's heart sank instantly. What did this mean?
Was the woman warning him to be cautious of Old Li?
But why should he be wary of Old Li? In an instant, Wang Niu's mind became chaotic.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from outside. Wang Niu's heart jolted, and he quickly tucked the note away. His heartbeat quickened, and his face turned pale as the footsteps drew closer, making his breathing more erratic.
"What’s wrong?" Old Li appeared before him.
Wang Niu was startled by Old Li's sudden appearance. The words from the woman's note echoed in his mind: "Be careful of those around you." Wasn't that referring to Old Li?
At that moment, Wang Niu felt an unfamiliar sense of unease towards Old Li.
Old Li noticed the strange expression in Wang Niu's eyes and asked what was wrong.
Wang Niu snapped back to reality. Had he really been foolish enough to believe a stranger? After all, Old Li had saved him. If Old Li wanted to harm him, he could have done so when he had the chance; there was no need for any pretense.
"Nothing. I was just thinking about last night; I’m a bit scared," he said, trying to sound calm.
But for some reason, Old Li's gaze turned peculiar as he looked at him.
This made Wang Niu's heart race even more. Could it be that Old Li had noticed something?
"Are you hiding something from me?" Old Li suddenly stepped closer.
Wang Niu already felt guilty, and now with Old Li pressing him like this, his anxiety deepened.
"I... I don’t have anything," he stammered.
After hearing his words, Old Li didn't believe him at all. Just as he was about to speak, a voice came from outside, "Old Li, what are you doing? Hurry up and come out; there are two corpses waiting for you to handle!"
Only then did Old Li shut his mouth, shooting him an unhappy glare before stepping outside.
Once Old Li left, Wang Niu felt a whirlwind of confusion in his heart. He had no idea what to do next, and it seemed Old Li had noticed his unease.
Suddenly, a method appeared in Wang Niu's mind.
He quickly took out a piece of paper, found a secluded spot, and burned it.
After finishing, Wang Niu let out a deep sigh of relief, but in the blink of an eye, he froze again. Old Li was gone; what was he supposed to do now?
Was he supposed to just wait here for Old Li to return?
But that would be too boring. Suddenly, Wang Niu thought of the room Old Li had taken him to yesterday. Perhaps Old Li was still there.
Wang Niu followed the path Old Li had led him down and arrived at the door of the room from last night. It was locked now. He paused for a moment, noticing an unusual green grass hanging at the entrance. How strange; how could something like this suddenly appear?
At that moment, the door inexplicably swung open. The green grass hung in the middle of the doorway, swaying despite the absence of wind. This made Wang Niu feel very uneasy; surely nothing terrifying was about to happen again?
Just then, a cough echoed from inside the room. It sounded somewhat like Old Li's voice.
Wang Niu hesitated for a moment, but after a while, he decided to step inside. No matter what happened in this eerie place, he could only look up to Old Li.
However, to his surprise, as soon as he entered, the door closed behind him.
Wang Niu couldn't help but gasp in shock, his heart racing.
The coughing grew louder from within, making Wang Niu increasingly anxious.
He stepped further inside; the platform where the corpses were supposed to be lay empty. However, there were faint traces of blood on it. Not only that, but some blood had also dripped down onto the pristine white sheets.
The sound of coughing indeed came from behind the curtain.
Wang Niu gasped, feeling as if he were rooted to the spot, unable to lift his legs. Just then, a shadow suddenly appeared on the curtain, swaying ominously. This made Wang Niu's heart race; he knew that whatever was behind the curtain might not be human, but something terrifying.
Suddenly, the curtain made a tearing sound, and a long crack appeared in the middle.
Wang Niu's mind became a whirlwind, especially when he saw a face emerge on the curtain.
It was a dead person.
Suddenly, the corpse hidden behind the curtain stood up and eerily approached Wang Niu.
His pupils dilated in shock, and he felt completely frozen.
Just as the corpse was about to get closer, the door was violently slammed open. He didn't know who burst in, but they threw a white cloth directly over the corpse.
The dead body collapsed right in front of him, and he was freed.
At that moment, it felt as if all his strength had been drained away; he slumped down onto the ground.
"Are you okay?" A familiar female voice came from behind him.
He turned to see who it was and found that it was the woman.
"You... what are you doing here?" he asked her in surprise.
She smiled at him. "If I hadn't shown up, you would have been done for. My name is Ling'er."
Hearing her words, Wang Niu felt a wave of gratitude wash over him. If she hadn't arrived in time, he might have been dead.
"Thank you."
Ling Er shook her head, a faint smile appearing on her face as her gaze fell upon the corpse on the ground. Wang Niu noticed this and felt a surge of confusion rising within him. Just as he was about to speak, Ling Er turned her attention to him and said, "Don't ask those questions, because they are strange matters. Let's go; staying here will only bring you more trouble."
Wang Niu paused for a moment, sensing that the woman named Ling Er seemed to imply something deeper in her words.
Was she suggesting that he leave the Funeral Home?
At that moment, Ling Er picked up the corpse from the ground. Wang Niu's eyes remained fixed on her, and he suddenly felt that she was struggling a bit with the weight. He wanted to offer his help, but Ling Er's sharp reprimand stopped him in his tracks.
"Get out of here quickly and don't stay any longer!" Ling Er's tone had turned fierce, and her expression matched it.
Wang Niu was taken aback by her demeanor and could only comply, stepping outside.
Just then, he heard Old Li's voice behind him, nearly causing him to cry out in fright.
He turned around to see Old Li looking at him with a troubled expression. "What are you doing here?"
Wang Niu was startled by Old Li's serious demeanor and hurriedly explained himself. Upon hearing this, Old Li's face turned grim as he strode toward Wang Niu. "Do you even know what you were just saying?"
Wang Niu was momentarily stunned, unsure of what Old Li meant by that.
Old Li's gaze shifted to the room behind him. Wang Niu felt a chill run down his spine and instinctively turned around, only to be met with a pale face staring back at him.
Old Li immediately pulled him away. "What has been going on with you lately? You've been acting so paranoid. How could this door have opened?"
It was then that Wang Niu realized the door had indeed not been opened at all.
But what had just happened to him?
Old Li gave Wang Niu a deep look before leading him away from there. Once they were outside the Funeral Home, Old Li turned serious and said, "Tell me, did you sign a contract with that woman in the cafeteria?"
