Wang Niu looked around, and a chill ran through his heart; Old Li was nowhere to be seen.
"Master Old Li," he called out tentatively several times, but there was no response. The eerie silence made him anxious. Could it be that Old Li was trying to scare him?
Just as he was feeling increasingly uneasy, he suddenly heard mournful cries coming from all around the village. He swallowed hard and instinctively glanced around.
At that moment, the small oil lamps beside him inexplicably extinguished all at once. Meanwhile, the moon in the sky became extraordinarily bright, illuminating everything as if it were daytime, which made Wang Niu feel something was off.
Suddenly, a series of whistling sounds filled Wang Niu's ears, and dark shadows began to appear in the night sky, swaying around him incessantly.
Wang Niu lay back on the bed and shut his eyes tightly, too frightened to peek. For some reason, these entities did not leave; they continued to circle around him.
He dared not open his eyes, keeping them firmly shut. However, this was not a solution, as those things were pressing down on him.
Furrowing his brow, he tried to push them away. Just then, Old Li's voice reached him: "If you want to return to normal, don't move. These ghosts are absorbing your Ghostly Aura. If you stir, you'll anger them."
Wang Niu immediately froze in place, listening to Old Li's words. At that moment, he felt reassured; Old Li had not actually left.
After a while, he sensed that his body felt much lighter and that the surrounding stillness had returned. He cautiously opened his eyes, and everything had returned to normal. Old Li emerged with a grin on his face. Wang Niu nearly exploded with anger; after all, he had just been terrified.
Wang Niu jumped out of bed and stormed over to Old Li. Just as he was about to speak, Old Li cut in: "Don't be angry; I was watching over you. Look, those ghosts have absorbed all the ghostly energy from you."
Wang Niu paused for a moment and glanced at himself; it did seem like what Old Li said was true.
Old Li gave him a knowing look and walked out of the small village. Just then, an eerie cry echoed behind him, startling Wang Niu into quickly following the old man.
Old Li chuckled at Wang Niu's panicked expression and stopped walking. "You can't act like this; if you get to my place like this, you might just scare yourself to death."
Listening to the old man's words, Wang Niu was suddenly startled. Could it be that Old Li's family was involved in the business of dealing with the dead?
Old Li's lips curled into a slight smile as he said softly, "Did Old Chen not tell you what I do?"
Wang Niu shook his head in confusion. Regardless, he decided to follow Old Li; after all, he had nowhere else to go, and Uncle Chen had told him that only Old Li could save him.
"I prepare the deceased for their final appearance. Do you understand?" Old Li's expression immediately turned serious.
Wang Niu was taken aback, momentarily at a loss for words.
Seeing his reaction, Old Li chuckled a few times and said, "If you're scared, you can leave. Besides, your Ghostly Aura has dissipated, so logically speaking, there shouldn't be any danger."
With that, Old Li continued walking ahead. Wang Niu felt a jolt of surprise and hurriedly followed him, saying, "Master Old Li, that's not what I meant! No matter what you do, I want to stay with you."
Wang Niu's tone was very sincere. Upon hearing this, Old Li stopped and looked at him seriously. "Are you sure? Once you’re with me, it means accepting my line of work and stepping into this world."
Wang Niu hesitated for a moment, feeling conflicted. After a while, he nodded earnestly and said, "Alright then. From now on, I'll rely on Master Old Li to guide me."
Old Li looked at Wang Niu with a satisfied expression after hearing his response and nodded. The two of them left the place together.
By the afternoon, they finally arrived at River Town.
River Town was quite a complex little town. The people here were amusing. As Wang Niu observed the crowd, he felt somewhat puzzled. Just then, Old Li turned his head towards Wang Niu and said, "Let's go. We just need to walk a bit further to reach our place."
Wang Niu nodded and walked alongside Old Li. At that moment, someone tapped him on the back. He nearly yelped in surprise. Instinctively turning around to look, he saw no suspicious person, which left him feeling quite strange. Who had just tapped him?
Could it have been an accident?
Wang Niu shook his head and continued walking forward. However, before he could take a few more steps, someone tapped his shoulder again several times.
Wang Niu felt a surge of irritation as he turned away again, pretending not to see anyone around him. This only fueled his frustration; if someone was playing a prank on him, it was going too far.
He became more cautious and turned again. Just then, he suddenly felt an odd sensation. He quickly glanced back, only to accidentally catch sight of a terrifying ghostly face grinning at him.
He screamed in terror.
Wang Niu's scream drew the attention of everyone nearby.
They stared at him as if he were a monster, and Old Li, who was walking ahead, turned to look at him. "What's wrong with you?"
Taking a deep breath, he replied to Old Li, "I... I just saw something horrifying."
Old Li paused for a moment before responding, "Are you too tense? If there were something scary, I would have noticed it. Just relax a bit."
With that, Old Li continued walking, but Wang Niu's heart was filled with unease.
He had thought he had escaped those things, but they seemed to be growing bolder instead.
He hurried to catch up with them. After walking for a while, they arrived at Old Li's place.
Old Li lived in a Funeral Home.
Although Wang Niu had mentally prepared himself for this, once he arrived, he couldn't help but feel anxious.
"Are you scared?" Old Li asked as he looked at him.
Wang Niu forced himself to suppress his fear and replied to Old Li, "I'm not scared."
Old Li smiled lightly and walked into the Funeral Home, while Wang Niu stood frozen for a moment before following him inside.
As soon as he entered, Wang Niu was hit by a foul odor that resembled the smell of medicine.
"Master Li, what is that smell?" Wang Niu asked, clutching his stomach; the stench was overwhelming.
Old Li stopped and looked at Wang Niu. "That's the smell of the solution used to clean the bodies."
The thought of that made Wang Niu feel dazed. Old Li smiled mysteriously and said to him, "Do you want to take a look?"
Wang Niu initially wanted to refuse, but his instinctive reaction was to agree. He felt a pang of regret as Old Li led him to the area where they washed the bodies.
The closer they got, the more pungent the smell became.
Wang Niu felt as if he might faint from the stench but managed to hold himself together. Just then, Old Li turned around and pointed to a dark red door in front of them. "It's right here. Are you sure you want to go in?"
Looking at the dark red door, Wang Niu felt an inexplicable sense of dread. He took a deep breath and replied to Old Li, "Yes."
He thought that since he had come this far, it would be embarrassing to say he wouldn't go in.
After all, he was a grown man.
"Good," Old Li said with satisfaction as he led Wang Niu inside. When the red wooden door swung open, Wang Niu felt as though something had struck him; his body trembled slightly. As the door fully opened, he saw a puppet hanging in mid-air.
The puppet looked incredibly tragic and horrifying, nearly scaring him to death.
He took a deep breath, repeatedly reminding himself to calm down, while Old Li had already stepped inside.
Wang Niu intended to move forward but found himself frozen in place, unable to move at all.
After a while, he finally regained his composure. Taking a deep breath, he continued to walk forward.
At that moment, an unexpected scene unfolded. A puppet hanging in mid-air suddenly fell, landing right on his neck. In an instant, he felt a chill around his throat.
Unable to hold back, he let out a loud scream. Hearing the commotion, Old Li rushed out from inside.
"What happened?" Old Li's gaze fell on Wang Niu's neck. When he saw the puppet there, his expression changed dramatically. He immediately threw the puppet to the ground and pulled out a lighter, setting the puppet ablaze without hesitation.
Wang Niu was stunned by Old Li's actions. Just as he was about to ask what was wrong, Old Li's tone shifted drastically as he said, "Don't speak! Quickly turn around!"
Seeing Old Li's serious demeanor made Wang Niu's heart race. Could there be something wrong with that puppet?
Not daring to be careless, he quickly turned around. Old Li lifted up the back of his shirt, looking extremely tense. When he saw that there was nothing on Wang Niu's back, he couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief and muttered to himself, "Thank goodness there's nothing."
Wang Niu was taken aback by Old Li's words and turned back to him, asking, "Master Li, what were you just saying?"
