The woman was surprisingly alive, yet she seemed as if she were dead.
Wang Niu gasped in shock. Suddenly, it felt as if a mysterious force had pulled him into the stone coffin. His eyes widened in an instant, and just as he was about to struggle, he felt a heavy blow to his back. A piercing pain surged through his entire body.
It was as if all his strength had been drained away, leaving him sprawled over the woman's body.
Cold sweat broke out all over him. At that moment, the stone coffin's lid came crashing down, trapping him and the woman inside.
"Ah!" Wang Niu was taken aback by this sudden turn of events.
He struggled desperately to push the stone door open, but it was futile.
A chilling laugh echoed from the woman.
Wang Niu froze for a moment, unable to look at her. He felt movement beneath him; the woman was waking up.
Wang Niu was paralyzed with fear, unable to move as she drew closer. He could do nothing but watch helplessly.
Suddenly, the woman's face lunged toward him, and in an instant, a bloody mouth was right in front of him. Wang Niu's vision went black, and he lost consciousness.
When he awoke, it was already afternoon, and everything around him had changed.
"What happened?" Wang Niu stared at his surroundings in disbelief. Wasn't he in the Cursed Graveyard? How did he end up here, near a shop?
While he was still dazed, he suddenly heard footsteps behind him.
Wang Niu turned around sharply and saw Uncle Chen approaching with a serious expression on his face.
Wang Niu quickly got up from the ground and gently brushed off the dust from his clothes. "Uncle Chen, what is this?"
Before he could finish speaking, Uncle Chen immediately interrupted him, grabbing him and pulling his shirt open.
Wang Niu was taken aback by Uncle Chen's action and hurriedly asked what was wrong.
Uncle Chen snorted coldly, pointing at his stomach. "Look here."
Wang Niu blinked in confusion and looked down at his abdomen, where he saw a long red mark that was quite alarming.
"What... what happened?" Wang Niu was startled, his face turning pale.
He remembered that there had been no mark on him before; how could such a red mark suddenly appear?
His mind raced as if it were about to explode, and he suddenly thought of the woman in the stone coffin from last night.
Could it be that woman?
Panic set in for Wang Niu as he shook his head and looked at Uncle Chen. "Uncle Chen, what is going on?"
Uncle Chen sneered, refusing to say anything, and turned to leave.
Wang Niu hurriedly chased after him, blocking his path. "Uncle Chen, what is happening? Please tell me why this is happening to me!"
Uncle Chen glanced at him indifferently before walking into the shop. Wang Niu's heart sank further; he felt even more uncertain after Uncle Chen's reaction.
"Uncle Chen, what is going on?" Wang Niu's voice trembled with fear.
A slight smirk appeared on Uncle Chen's lips. "Do you know what kind of being that woman you encountered last night is?"
Wang Niu was taken aback by Uncle Chen's words and shook his head in disbelief.
Uncle Chen's gaze turned sharp as he said, "That is a ghost. Do you know why there is a red mark on your body? That is the Yin Yuan Seal. Once this mark appears on you, it means you are being targeted by her. Tonight at midnight, this female ghost will come looking for you with the wedding procession of ghosts."
Upon hearing Uncle Chen's words, Wang Niu was so frightened that he couldn't speak. He never expected that the woman was actually a ghost.
"Ah, Uncle Chen, I don't want to marry that ghost! What should I do? Please help me!" Wang Niu knelt before Uncle Chen.
Uncle Chen shot him a glare. "Help you? How can I help you? Do you know that the Yin Yuan Seal has already been placed? There’s no way to save you now."
Wang Niu felt all his strength drain away, and he collapsed onto the ground, looking utterly lost. "What should I do, Uncle Chen? I don’t want to die so soon!"
Uncle Chen looked at Wang Niu and sighed. "Do you remember what I told you before?"
Wang Niu shook his head, while Uncle Chen's gaze remained fixed on him. "When you were very young, I told you that your identity is different from ordinary people. You are prone to attracting unclean things, so you must be careful. But what did you do? Not only did you ignore my warnings, but you also attracted trouble. Do you understand? Once you've attracted it, you'll never be able to get rid of it."
Uncle Chen's words felt like a sentence of doom to Wang Niu, plunging him into despair.
"Uncle Chen, I was wrong! From the beginning, I shouldn't have let that woman buy the clay figurine. If I hadn't sold her the figurine, none of this would have happened," Wang Niu said regretfully.
Hearing this, Uncle Chen's expression turned helpless. He glanced at Wang Niu before looking away, as if speaking to himself rather than Wang Niu. "You know, even if you hadn’t sold the figurine to that woman, you would still encounter strange and terrifying things."
Wang Niu was stunned. "Why? Is it because of my identity?"
Uncle Chen nodded seriously and continued, "Do you know where you were born?"
Wang Niu looked at Uncle Chen in confusion. This was the first time Uncle Chen had brought up his background. He remembered asking about it before, but Uncle Chen had always glared at him fiercely and refused to answer.
He couldn't understand why Uncle Chen was now willing to talk about it.
He shook his head at Uncle Chen, indicating he didn't know.
Uncle Chen continued, "At that time, you cried out in a small mountain village. In the beginning, there were still people in that village, but everyone was frightened by the scene of your birth. After you cried out, your mother also died. Not only that, at the same time, a Demon Child with a special connection to you was born as well. The aura from him also transferred to you. From the moment you were born, it signified that you were different from ordinary people. If you can survive the visit from the female ghost tonight to collect your soul, then you will live. If not, you can only die; there's nothing I can do to help you."
As Uncle Chen finished speaking, Wang Niu felt an overwhelming pressure gripping his heart.
He had no knowledge of these matters until now. Hearing Uncle Chen's words made him feel an immense weight on his shoulders.
"Uncle Chen, please just tell me what I should do," he pleaded helplessly.
Uncle Chen stood up and his gaze fell upon a pile of Paper Men. Wang Niu paused for a moment and looked at the Paper Men as well.
"Uncle Chen, what is this?" Wang Niu asked, somewhat confused.
Uncle Chen looked at Wang Niu and said, "Do you remember what I told you before?"
Wang Niu shook his head and replied, "Uncle Chen, are you suggesting using the Paper Man for me?"
Uncle Chen nodded in satisfaction. "You haven't forgotten my words. The Paper Man is indeed the best solution."
Wang Niu felt as if he had grasped a glimmer of hope and asked Uncle Chen for specific instructions. Uncle Chen pointed to one of the Paper Men in front and instructed Wang Niu to take it down.
Wang Niu immediately retrieved the Paper Man. Uncle Chen walked into the back room, and after a while, he emerged holding a bowl of something.
Wang Niu looked over; it was a bowl of red blood.
"Uncle Chen, what is this for?" Wang Niu asked.
Uncle Chen glanced at him without answering and picked up a brush beside him, starting to paint on the Paper Man.
Wang Niu looked strangely at Uncle Chen, who seemed to be writing something. After a while, Wang Niu finally realized that Uncle Chen was writing down his birth date and time on the Paper Man.
"Uncle Chen, what is this?" Wang Niu asked curiously.
"Naturally, it's for substitution. Once this Paper Man has your birth date and time, it will carry your essence. The entities that come to collect souls are all yin beings, and they will take the Paper Man as you. Once they carry it away, you will be safe by dawn," Uncle Chen explained.
"Uncle Chen, can this really work?" Wang Niu's heart was still filled with worry.
Uncle Chen furrowed his brow slightly and said, "It depends on the situation."
Wang Niu's heart sank. He wanted to say something but held back his words.
Uncle Chen glanced around again and suddenly picked up the bowl in his hand, tapping it against the surrounding pillars.
Seeing this, Wang Niu asked Uncle Chen, "Uncle Chen, what is this for?"
Uncle Chen looked at Wang Niu and said, "This is to protect you."
After saying that, Uncle Chen continued with his actions, and Wang Niu felt a warm sensation in his heart.
Once everything was ready, Uncle Chen walked into the inner room. Wang Niu intended to follow him, but Uncle Chen suddenly came out again, holding something that appeared to be a lantern made of paper.
Uncle Chen placed the lantern in front of Wang Niu. "When night falls, you must enter the lantern and not come out. Do you understand? No matter what happens, do not come out. As long as you stay inside, they won't notice you."
Wang Niu nodded. This time, he listened seriously to Uncle Chen's words.
After giving his instructions, Uncle Chen left.
Wang Niu stared at the Paper Man in the center and the lantern beside it, feeling a sudden wave of fear wash over him.
He swallowed hard and closed the shop door. Just as he was about to turn away, a voice came from outside.
Wang Niu was startled; it wasn't even dark yet. Could it be those Demons had arrived?
"Open the door."
He paused for a moment. Wasn't that Uncle Chen's voice?
He quickly opened the door and saw Uncle Chen looking at him with a serious expression. "Who told you to close the door?"
Wang Niu was taken aback. If he didn't close the door, did that mean he should leave it open?
Uncle Chen shot him a glare. "If you close the door, how will those Demons get in? If they don't leave, you'll be in even more danger."
Wang Niu awkwardly smiled and said, "I understand, Uncle Chen. I'll open the door right now."
With that, Wang Niu opened the shop door.
Only then did a satisfied smile appear on Uncle Chen's face. He glanced at the Paper Man and instructed Wang Niu, "Tonight, you must listen to me carefully and not come out, understood?"
Wang Niu nodded earnestly, and then Uncle Chen left.
There was still some time before it got dark, so Wang Niu didn't immediately enter the cage but stood outside watching.
For some reason, nightfall seemed to come unusually slowly, which made Wang Niu feel quite anxious.
As time passed second by second, it was almost dark. Wang Niu's heart skipped a beat, and he stepped into the lantern. For some reason, at the moment he entered the lantern, a whistling sound came from outside, like the sound of wind.
Wang Niu couldn't help but shiver. Could it be those Demons had come?
Then he heard strange sounds coming from outside the door.
His heart tightened more and more.
The temperature throughout his body began to drop.
Then, he heard the sound of a suona, as if someone were beating drums and gongs.
He couldn't help but take a deep breath, the unease in his heart growing stronger.
A chilling laugh echoed again, causing him to shudder. Soon after, it felt like many voices were flooding into his ears.
"Bringing the bride from the shadows, living ones step aside," a strange voice rang out in the pitch-black night sky.
Wang Niu swallowed hard, his body instinctively shrinking back into the lantern.
At that moment, he peeked out from behind the lantern and saw what appeared to be a palanquin suspended in mid-air. There was no one around the palanquin, and he couldn't help but tremble, too afraid to look outside.
