Wang Niu found himself drawn in by the woman's words, "How much are you willing to pay?"
The woman pulled out a thick stack of cash, and Wang Niu's eyes widened in surprise. He swallowed hard and asked her, "Are you saying this much?"
The woman nodded, confirming his assumption.
Wang Niu was momentarily stunned; he hadn't expected her to be so generous.
This amount of money could sustain him and Uncle Chen for quite some time.
Seeing that he was silent, the woman thought Wang Niu was dissatisfied with the amount. She quickly added, "If you think it's too little, I can double it for you."
With that, she produced another stack of bills.
Wang Niu was completely taken aback, hardly believing what was happening. This woman didn't seem like someone who had money to spare.
He felt conflicted; he wanted the money but worried about Uncle Chen's reaction.
But if he didn't take it, how would he and Uncle Chen manage?
After a moment of hesitation, Wang Niu accepted the money.
"Can I take this?" The woman asked, her gaze shifting to a clay figurine on the top shelf.
It was a completely black figurine tied with a red string.
For some reason, Wang Niu felt an eerie sensation from the figurine; it was unsettling and frightening.
"Yes, please take it quickly," Wang Niu urged her, waving his hand.
The woman looked at him with gratitude as she took the figurine away.
Wang Niu stared at the two stacks of cash in his hands, feeling a rush of exhilaration. Even if Uncle Chen scolded him later, surely he would forgive him given this windfall.
After all, without this money, their lives would be even harder.
Wang Niu waited for a long time, but Uncle Chen still hadn't returned. It was already evening, and according to their usual schedule, Uncle Chen should have been back by now.
Wang Niu looked at the two stacks of cash in his hands and felt an inexplicable sense of unease.
Earlier, he had seen Uncle Chen sell the clay figurines from the shelves, but it didn't seem like he had taken this much money before.
At that moment, strange sounds began to emanate from the shop, resembling the cries of children.
Fear crept into him; where were those sounds coming from? There were no children in the store.
Wang Niu cautiously glanced around, seeing nothing but emptiness. His heart raced even more. Suddenly, a dark shadow flashed past him.
He couldn't help but shiver and continued walking forward. Out of nowhere, he seemed to see the clay figurines on the shelves come to life, their eyeballs suddenly glowing.
Wang Niu jumped in fright. Terrified, he wanted to turn and run, but for some reason, his body froze in place, unable to move at all.
A wave of dread washed over him as his scalp tingled.
“Cackling.” The chilling sounds echoed in Wang Niu's ears once more.
A wave of cold swept through him as he instinctively turned to look behind him. To his horror, terrifying faces appeared behind him.
“Ah!” He screamed in terror.
In an instant, everything went black before Wang Niu's eyes as he fell into unconsciousness.
The next day, he was awakened by a familiar voice calling him. When he opened his eyes, he was surprised to see Uncle Chen had returned.
"Uncle Chen!" Wang Niu shouted.
Uncle Chen's expression was quite awkward as he looked at Wang Niu with a blank face. "Do you still remember what I told you before?"
Wang Niu was momentarily taken aback, not understanding Uncle Chen's meaning right away. He shook his head, which instantly made Uncle Chen angry. "Didn't I tell you? The things on that shelf cannot be sold to customers! How could you sell one?"
Wang Niu, startled by Uncle Chen's shout, suddenly understood. His face flushed red, and he lowered his head, too afraid to speak.
Seeing him like this only made Uncle Chen angrier. "What do you mean by this?"
Realizing Uncle Chen was upset, Wang Niu hurriedly handed over the money he had in his hand. But when he saw the money, he was dumbfounded. This wasn't cash; it was clearly Joss Paper meant for the dead!
How could this happen?
"Uncle Chen, this..." For a moment, Wang Niu didn't know what to do.
Uncle Chen sneered. "Do you know what trouble you've gotten yourself into?"
It was the first time Wang Niu had seen Uncle Chen like this, and he felt lost, unsure of how to react.
"Uncle Chen, what have I done?" Wang Niu's tone was filled with urgency.
"What have you done? Didn't you act on your own? Let me tell you, in a few years, a woman will come looking for your life," Uncle Chen said calmly as he sat down nearby.
"Ah!" Upon hearing this, Wang Niu became even more anxious. He quickly threw the paper money onto the ground and knelt before Uncle Chen. "Uncle Chen, I was wrong! Please save me!"
Uncle Chen let out a cold laugh. "Save you? Wang Niu, you're too naive. This is trouble you've brought upon yourself. Even if the heavens themselves came down to help you, they wouldn't be able to save you. If you hadn't sold that clay figure to that woman, you'd be safe and sound. But now? You know what your actions mean—you've essentially sold your own life."
"What are you talking about, Uncle Chen? Are you trying to scare me?" Wang Niu was completely stunned.
"Scare you? Ha! If you don't believe me, just wait and see. Three days from now, no woman will come looking for you," Uncle Chen said as he walked out the door.
Wang Niu wanted to follow him, but for some reason, he felt as if there were eyes watching him from outside. He had no choice but to retreat back into the shop on the second floor.
Uncle Chen had left, and now Wang Niu was all alone in the store.
Suddenly, a sound echoed through the silence, causing him to shudder. The noise instantly reminded him of the scene from last night.
He swallowed hard and walked to the back of the shop.
Uncle Chen's earlier words kept replaying in his mind, prompting Wang Niu to lock the front door of the store.
As time passed slowly, Wang Niu felt increasingly anxious. It was already the third day, and he couldn't shake off the uncertainty of whether Uncle Chen's words were true.
That night, his anxiety intensified. Whether it was just his imagination or not, he felt a chilling breeze sweep through him.
He quickly reinforced the door and, once done, returned to his room. He covered himself with a blanket and fell asleep almost immediately.
At that moment, the clock in the shop began to chime incessantly, heightening his fear. Normally at this hour, he would have been fast asleep, but tonight, sleep eluded him.
Time dragged on without any disturbances, which only made him more uneasy.
By three in the morning, his eyelids began to droop. Just as he was about to drift off, a knock sounded at the door.
The sudden noise jolted Wang Niu awake, banishing all traces of sleepiness.
He carefully got out of bed and made his way to the shop, noticing a figure swaying outside the door, resembling a woman.
Wang Niu's heart skipped a beat. Could it be true what his master had said? Was that woman really here to claim his life?
Instantly, he felt a chill enveloping him.
Fear gripped him, and he dashed back to his room, pulling the covers over himself even tighter.
"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid," he kept telling himself.
Suddenly, the sound seemed to draw closer, and he could vaguely hear the woman's footsteps.
The woman.
At that moment, his door creaked open with a groan, and a sliver of light seeped in from outside, illuminating Wang Niu's eyelids.
Though he didn't open his eyes, he sensed an extremely resentful gaze directed at him.
"Ha ha ha," a woman's voice echoed in his mind.
He trembled in fear, burying himself deeper under the covers.
"Exchange your life for mine; you are the one who harmed me," the woman's voice repeatedly pierced his ears.
Suddenly, he felt something pressing down on him. At first, it was light, but soon it became heavier and heavier.
A terrifying thought struck him: could it be that the woman was lying on top of him?
"Ha ha ha," a laugh rang directly in his ears. Not only that, but he also felt the woman rolling back and forth on him.
Wang Niu was engulfed in panic; he truly didn't know what to do. He had once heard Uncle Chen say that if a woman kept pressing down like this, it would bring great misfortune.
Gritting his teeth, he resolved to push the woman off the bed.
A loud sound reached Wang Niu's ears, like a woman falling from a bed.
His breathing quickened, unsure if the woman would attack him.
However, what struck him as strange was that time passed second by second, and he heard no movement at all. Had the woman already left?
He cautiously pulled back the covers but saw no sign of the woman.
This made Wang Niu's heart instantly relax. Just as he was about to throw off the blanket, suddenly, a drop of blood fell from the beam above, followed by another, and then another.
