I furrowed my brow as I left this place with Feng Ju.
Along the way, noticing my change in expression, Feng Ju asked me what was wrong.
After a moment of thought, I replied, "I've always felt that fortune teller is suspicious. I can't shake the feeling that he is from the Former Heavenly Court and possesses greater power than us."
"What do you mean he's from the Former Heavenly Court? That's impossible!" Feng Ju exclaimed, disbelief etched on her face.
"I'm just speculating; we need to investigate further," I said, my tone growing serious. If that fortune teller truly was from the Former Heavenly Court, things could get complicated.
"Should we head to the village first or continue monitoring the fortune teller?" Feng Ju asked, looking puzzled.
"The village. Those Evil Spirits are about to wreak havoc there. We need to return and prepare. Plus, we don't know if the Dragon Matriarch will show up," I replied.
"Alright, Wang Jun. If that's the case, let's head back and get ready. Tomorrow night is the Ghost Festival," she said.
I nodded at Feng Ju, my heart heavy with concern. If we didn't handle this situation well, it could lead to an influx of Vengeful Spirits.
We returned to the village, and the men sighed in relief upon seeing us. "Masters, we thought you had abandoned us! We're glad you're back. Can you tell us what to do?"
I acknowledged them with a grunt and took a serious look around the small village. It resembled a circular plaza, with houses situated on either side, forming what looked like a formation.
"Each of you needs to quickly make a scarecrow and write your Birth Date and Time on it. Hand it over to me and leave this place immediately. Wait until after the Ghost Festival before returning, understood?"
The men immediately set to work upon hearing my instructions.
Watching them leave, I couldn't relax; uncertainty gnawed at me about whether this plan would work.
"Wang Jun, are you worried?" Feng Ju asked.
"Yes. While using scarecrows to represent those men is a good idea, once those Evil Spirits catch wind of it, they'll intensify their search for them. There are too many Evil Spirits; controlling them will be difficult," I explained.
"But can we set up a formation to trap these Evil Spirits inside?" Feng Ju suggested.
"I thought of that too, but if someone outside tries to disrupt the formation, the consequences would be unimaginable. So, I need you to keep watch outside while I deal with the Evil Spirit inside," I said.
"Sure, Wang Jun, you can count on me," Feng Ju replied, patting his shoulder.
After making arrangements, Feng Ju hid in a concealed spot outside to wait for the Dragon Matriarch's arrival, while I stayed inside. At that moment, the men brought over the completed scarecrows.
"Master, we have finished making them and written down the Birth Date and Time," one of them said.
I nodded and checked them over. Once I confirmed everything was in order, I instructed them to return the scarecrows to their respective homes.
After everything was set up, the men quickly left.
Once they were gone, I cast a spell on the scarecrows. With the magic applied, they transformed into human forms resembling the men from earlier.
They began to move as if they were normal people. Just then, I suddenly felt a strange wind.
I heightened my vigilance and looked around, only to see a dark shadow appearing in the small village—an old woman.
This made me suspect that this old woman might be a shaman.
The old woman walked into the village but got stuck at the entrance before she could take another step.
The air around her turned cold. She glanced ahead as if she understood something and reached out her hand to touch it. A wisp of black mist appeared on her hand, further raising my suspicions about her identity; she must be a shaman.
Before long, the formation I had set up was easily unraveled by the old woman. This struck me like a bolt from the blue—how could this be possible?
The old woman was able to break it herself.
She stepped inside and began surveying the houses in front of her. Then she approached the nearest one, causing my heart to race with anxiety.
As she entered, a sinister glint flashed in her eyes. At that moment, the scarecrows moved toward her. Sensing their approach, the old woman immediately turned around and fixed her gaze on them.
The Scarecrow looked at the old woman, confusion evident in his eyes. "Who are you, and how did you end up in my home?"
Upon hearing the Scarecrow speak, the old woman's expression mirrored his confusion. "Are you from around here?"
The Scarecrow paused for a moment before nodding. The old woman approached him and placed her hand on his body.
"What are you doing?" the Scarecrow said angrily, pushing her away.
The old woman looked a bit embarrassed and smiled. "It's nothing. I just wanted to know how things are in your village. I noticed a sense of lifelessness here, so I came to take a look. Since you're all right, that's good."
With that, she turned to leave, and the Scarecrow called after her, "You're really crazy!"
The old woman's expression stiffened as she walked away.
I finally felt relieved and quickly moved to the Scarecrow's side, placing my hand on him to check for anything unusual. To my surprise, I detected a strange aura emanating from him—an energy that the old woman had infused into his body, seemingly to verify his identity.
Fortunately, it seemed that the old woman had no doubts about the Scarecrow's identity.
I released the Scarecrow and made my way to Feng Ju's hidden spot.
When Feng Ju saw me arrive, he said, "Wang Jun, what's wrong? Is there something serious going on?"
I nodded and replied, "Did you notice anything unusual just now?"
Feng Ju paused for a moment before responding, "What kind of unusual? I didn't see anything. Did something happen on your end?"
I nodded solemnly. "Yes, something indeed happened. An old woman came to the village."
"The old woman?" Feng Ju's eyes brightened at once, his tone becoming urgent. "Was she the Dragon Matriarch?"
I shook my head. "I'm not sure, but I have a feeling she is the Dragon Matriarch, which is why I came to tell you."
Feng Ju's expression changed dramatically as he turned to me and said, "This is impossible! If the Dragon Matriarch were here, I would definitely feel it. But I don't sense anything at all. What's going on?"
I paused for a moment, glancing toward the village. Above it, I could see dark clouds of mist beginning to form.
"Wang Jun, what do you think that is?" Feng Ju pointed toward the sky above the village.
I furrowed my brow and replied, "I understand why you can't feel the demonic energy. That old woman used her Popularity when she arrived. She masked her demonic aura with it, along with some sorcery. Once she leaves, her demonic energy will become visible in the sky above the village."
Feng Ju looked enlightened, but just as he was about to speak, a white figure appeared in midair. "Look, Wang Jun! It seems someone else has arrived."
As soon as Feng Ju finished speaking, I caught sight of the newcomer—it was the fortune teller we had seen in another town.
"Isn't that the fortune teller we saw before? What is he doing here?" Feng Ju exclaimed in surprise.
I shook my head; perhaps this fortune teller had a purpose similar to that of the old woman.
The fortune teller's gaze was fixed on the demonic energy hovering above the village.
"Wang Jun, what is he doing?" Feng Ju asked, puzzled.
I shrugged; I wasn't sure about the fortune teller's actions either.
At that moment, something strange happened. The fortune teller suddenly emitted a very intense light. In an instant, this light shot into our eyes, causing us to instinctively close them. After a while, our vision began to clear up.
