The man nodded without hesitation and said, "You're right. It's not just one thing; I also want to join forces with you to kill the Tree Sage. I've been watching you ever since the Tree Sage publicly declared you the future Spirit King."
"Why should I believe you?" I looked at the man, my thoughts becoming complicated. My intuition told me that what he said was true.
"Because if you don't trust me, then you'll become like me next. Everyone around you will pay the price for your inaction," he said seriously.
His deep gaze shook me to my core, as if I could see the sins of the Tree Sage reflected in his eyes.
"Have you thought it over?" he asked.
"You still haven't told me the cause of all this. Why should I cooperate with you? It's impossible for just the Tree Sage to wipe me out," I replied.
He looked at me, something flickering in his eyes before he said, "Alright, if you want to know, I'll tell you. Perhaps you don't understand this world, or maybe you're not from this world, so you don't know. But even the people here are unaware because their memories have long been erased by the Tree Sage."
"What do you mean?"
"Of course, it's because the Tree Sage is covering up its own crimes."
I was taken aback by his words. He looked at me and said, "Before you, I was also chosen by the Tree Sage as the Spirit King. But do you know why I ended up like this?"
Looking at his face, my heart raced with a thousand thoughts, as if I could guess what he would say next.
"It’s because of the Tree Sage," his tone was filled with rage, his dark eyes blazing like they were about to erupt with fire.
"What do you mean?" My voice grew urgent, a fire igniting in my chest; after all, I had trusted the Tree Sage completely.
Hearing his words made me feel as though I had been deceived on a grand scale.
The man glanced at me calmly, as if he could foresee the expression on my face. "Before you, there were many Spirit Kings, and they all had no idea of their ultimate fate. I was one in a million fortunate enough to stumble upon the dirty secrets of the Tree Sage."
He began to recount his story.
Every year, before the spiritual energy gathering commenced, the Tree Sage would announce an important matter in front of everyone: the selection of the future Spirit King. The anticipation for this future Spirit King was immense; everyone yearned to be chosen because the power of a Spirit King was unparalleled, though it was, of course, subordinate to the Tree Sage.
The Tree Sage would select a Spirit King who could be of assistance to him, as this meant that the chosen Spirit King would be capable of helping him with important matters in the future.
The man felt "honored" to be selected by the Tree Sage. At that time, he was overjoyed, and many envied him, believing he would rise above all others.
However, those people did not realize that being chosen as the Spirit King marked the beginning of a nightmare.
For a while after becoming the Spirit King, the man lived quite comfortably; life as a Spirit King was fulfilling. But how could such days last?
The nightmare soon arrived, catching not only him but everyone in this world off guard.
At that very moment, millions of children had gone missing across the entire world.
These individuals came to the Spirit King Palace to report this matter to him. Upon hearing it, he felt an immense pressure; after all, losing so many children was a grave issue, especially since these were the most precious children from ten tribes.
He began to investigate the situation. As he neared the conclusion of his inquiry, something strange occurred: every person in this world seemed to have forgotten that millions of children were missing. It was as if everyone had resigned themselves to this tragedy.
This incident raised his suspicions; it was impossible for such a significant event to go unnoticed by everyone. Thus, he began to secretly investigate further.
One night, he left the Spirit King Palace. The moonlit world appeared eerily strange, filled with red gas everywhere. He recognized what this gas was: it was the lost memories of those people. Someone had employed the Night Demon Technique—a form of Evil Arts capable of extracting others' memories—to enhance their own abilities. Officially, such Evil Arts were forbidden; how could anyone still practice them?
The man immediately became alert and began investigating the matter.
Through covert inquiries, he discovered that the repressed memories were being sent directly to the Moon Cave, using the moon as a conduit.
This Moon Cave was the dwelling place of the Tree Sage.
Upon realizing this, the man was taken aback, as if everything had gone awry.
To verify his findings, he secretly put in a great deal of effort, nearly being detected by the Tree Sage.
After gathering sufficient evidence, he called everyone together, intending to expose the Tree Sage's ugly truth. However, he had underestimated the situation; how could someone as cunning as the Tree Sage allow himself to be caught?
Thus, all of the man's plans fell apart.
When he presented this information and all the evidence before the crowd, they remained skeptical and even misunderstood him, thinking he was slandering the Tree Sage. After all, to these people, the Tree Sage was a sacred figure.
The man knew it would be difficult to overthrow the Tree Sage but persisted nonetheless. He expended all his spiritual energy to restore everyone's memories. Suddenly, their recollections returned; they remembered losing their children and combined this with the evidence he had previously provided. Faced with this proof, the towering image of the Tree Sage was immediately met with resistance from everyone present.
Yet they were naive; the Tree Sage was far too powerful, capable of overshadowing them all.
When the Tree Sage appeared, everyone became extremely agitated and unleashed their spiritual energy to attack him.
But they could not inflict even a scratch on him. Instead, all their unleashed energy was absorbed by the Tree Sage, transforming into his own strength. He became even more formidable than before, and everyone grew increasingly wary of him.
The Tree Sage cared little that people had uncovered his secrets because his spiritual power was so high that he could easily subdue them at will.
The Tree Sage unleashed his spiritual power, immobilizing the others. Now, the only ones who could move freely were the Tree Sage and the man.
The Tree Sage's face showed no signs of panic; instead, he calmly regarded the man. The man looked at the unmoving crowd below and felt a sense of foreboding wash over him. He never expected that despite all his calculations, he would still be defeated by the Tree Sage.
"Hmph, you have quite the audacity to try to deceive me like this," the Tree Sage said in a calm tone, though his expression betrayed his true feelings.
"How dare you, as a guardian of this world, commit such acts? You should feel ashamed before these people," the man retorted, unafraid as he locked eyes with the Tree Sage.
"What a joke. What do these people have to be ashamed of? They should be thanking me. If it weren't for me, this world would have been destroyed. Do you really think this world can last forever? Let me tell you, there are many worlds within this space. Do you know how many worlds have been devastated by the distortions of time? I have made great contributions for them; taking their children is only natural. I need to replenish my Divine Power. As for you, how ungrateful can you be? If I hadn't appointed you as Spirit King, do you think you'd even have the right to speak to me?" The Tree Sage glared at the man.
The man sneered but chose not to respond further; instead, he launched an attack. However, he was unaware of just how immense the Tree Sage's Divine Power truly was. Once they clashed, he quickly realized that the hidden strength of the Tree Sage was beyond his capacity to resist.
In less than a moment, the man was defeated and slammed to the ground by the Tree Sage's Divine Power.
"If you forget this incident, I can still allow you to remain as Spirit King—an eternal Spirit King. What do you say?" The Tree Sage offered an enticing proposition, but how could the man possibly agree to such terms?
