The Ghost Gate Sect Master retracted his gaze and continued, "So the King of Hell is still on our side. Let's go."
With that, the Ghost Gate Sect Master crossed the bridge and reached the other side. Seeing this, Captain Wu and I naturally did not linger and hurried to join him. After walking for a while, we came upon many wooden houses, each one closely packed together, their eaves adorned with red lanterns. The entire area was bathed in a crimson hue, creating an eerie atmosphere.
Moreover, the decorations here had an exotic feel to them.
"This is where the King of Hell resides," the Ghost Gate Sect Master suddenly turned to us and said.
At that moment, sounds of wood creaking emerged from the houses. We turned to look and saw figures in strange attire appearing before us.
Their faces were ghostly pale, and their makeup was shockingly grotesque, especially around their eyebrows and eyes, resembling someone who had attempted to apply makeup without any skill.
"Why do these people look so ugly?" Captain Wu whispered to me.
I had already been suppressing a laugh, but upon hearing Captain Wu's comment, I couldn't hold it in any longer and burst out laughing. At that sound, those figures turned their gaze toward me, their eyes dark and menacing. I shivered involuntarily as the Ghost Gate Sect Master shot me an expressionless glare, prompting me to quickly compose myself.
"Please," a woman dressed in red stepped forward. Her demeanor was very assertive as she gestured for the Ghost Gate Sect Master to enter.
He nodded and walked into the house, with us following closely behind. At that moment, the Red-Clad Woman exhaled a breath of Yin Qi toward us, instantly rendering both Captain Wu and me immobile.
I widened my eyes in shock at what was happening, while Captain Wu's expression mirrored my own fear. The Ghost Gate Sect Master seemed unaware of our predicament as he continued inside.
In no time at all, he disappeared from our view, and the next second, we were seized by those standing around us and taken to another location.
Before long, Captain Wu and I lost consciousness. When we finally opened our eyes again, we were met with a horrifying sight: it appeared to be a dungeon filled with various Evil Spirits. Their cries echoed throughout the cell as we found ourselves locked up in a central chamber.
Our situation was dire; we were flanked by rows of Evil Spirits on both sides, every move we made was under their watchful eyes.
"What is going on?" Captain Wu asked me in a low voice.
I shook my head, suddenly recalling something that sent a chill through me. Could it be that we had been deceived by the Ghost Gate Sect Master?
Or perhaps he never intended for us to help him at all; instead, he had lured us into the Underworld as hostages to appease the King of Hell.
The thought sent a wave of cold dread over me. I never expected the Ghost Gate Sect Master to be so treacherous. There was also the possibility that he had already discovered our presence and was using the King of Hell to deal with us, setting a trap to eliminate us.
Realizing this, anger surged within me. We had been so naive, falling for the Ghost Gate Sect Master's tricks.
Captain Wu noticed my expression and furrowed his brow, asking what was wrong.
I shared my thoughts with him, and his face turned pale as he asked what we should do.
At that moment, I felt anxious too, but I knew that panicking would not help. We needed to remain calm.
Since we were already captured, it would be better to sit down and think of a plan.
I pulled Captain Wu down beside me as I pondered our next move.
After a while, it seemed someone was approaching. I immediately grabbed Captain Wu and lay flat on the ground. The footsteps grew closer, and my heart raced faster with each step, unsure of what awaited us.
"You two, wake them up," came a commanding voice filled with authority.
My heart sank; that voice must belong to the King of Hell.
Moments later, Captain Wu and I felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over us. We had no reason to continue pretending to be unconscious, so we opened our eyes and feigned expressions of terror.
"Who are you? Why have you brought us here?" I took a step back.
"Heh, no wonder your master brought you here; it turns out you're both fools. Heh, but does the Ghost Gate Sect Master really think he can use such idiots for a trade?" The man standing in front of us was visibly angry.
Beside him, the White Soul Reaper quickly spoke up, "King Yan, don't be angry. They aren't fools; I believe they could be useful."
Upon hearing the White Soul Reaper's words, King Yan turned to him and asked, "What do you mean?"
The White Soul Reaper cast a sly glance at us and pulled King Yan aside, whispering something. Captain Wu and I had no idea what they were discussing, but judging by the White Soul Reaper's expression moments ago, it certainly wasn't anything good.
The two continued their conversation for quite some time, which made both Captain Wu and me increasingly uneasy. After all, this was the Underworld, King Yan's territory. If they truly intended to do something to us, it would be easy for them.
"Release them," King Yan commanded as he approached us, addressing the Ghost Soldiers on either side.
"Yes, King Yan." The Ghost Soldiers complied and let us go.
"You are not from the Ghost Gate Cult, are you?" King Yan stepped closer to me, his gaze piercing. Instantly, a chill ran down my spine; he knew.
"Heh, as expected. The White Soul Reaper was right," King Yan suddenly smirked.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances before maintaining our calm demeanor. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"White Soul Reaper, explain to them what this is all about," King Yan said as he looked at the White Soul Reaper.
The White Soul Reaper nodded and stepped forward, producing a mirror. I was momentarily taken aback, unsure of the White Soul Reaper's intentions, but in the next second, everything became clear.
The mirror reflected our appearance as we crossed the Bridge of Helplessness, and to my shock, we looked entirely human.
At that moment, something struck my heart hard, leaving my face pale.
"Ah, The King of the Earth, if I'm not mistaken," the King of Hell said.
"What?" I turned sharply to look at him. The King of Hell repeated himself.
"You actually know," I exclaimed in surprise.
"Don't worry; I'm the only one who knows. The Ghost Gate Sect Master is unaware. He still thinks of you as his own people. He deceived you by bringing you here just to placate us," the King of Hell explained.
"What do you mean by that?" I quickly pieced it together. The King of Hell must have his own plans; perhaps he wanted to cooperate with us, though there were certainly motives we were unaware of.
"My meaning is quite simple: cooperation," the King of Hell stated.
"What kind of cooperation?"
"Naturally for a greater cause. This isn't the place for discussions; let's have something to eat first," he said with a smile.
Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a hidden agenda behind that smile.
We followed the King of Hell out of the dungeon and arrived at an unexpectedly beautiful location. I never imagined there could be such a lovely place in the Underworld.
Surrounded by fireflies, we stood before an Open Platform, reminiscent of the place we had visited during the Feast of Demons.
Soon, Ghost Soldiers brought forth a lavish spread of food. However, neither Captain Wu nor I felt inclined to partake; who knew what kind of meat it was? It could very well be human flesh.
"Why aren't you eating?" The King of Hell looked at us with an expression of displeasure.
"Since we need to discuss serious matters, let's get on with it," I replied.
"Good, you truly are The King of the Earth, straightforward in your speech." With that, the King of Hell approached us holding a cup of wine. "You should be aware of the current state of the Three Realms."
I nodded. Since the King of Hell had brought this up, it indicated he was already informed. There was no benefit in lying to him; honesty would serve us better.
"Well, you know about the Ghost Gate Sect Master's ambitions, right?" The King of Hell scrutinized us.
"We know. He wants to swallow the Three Realms."
"Correct. Once the Ghost Gate Sect Master merges the Three Realms, he will come after people like us—including you."
"What do you mean? Didn't you say the Ghost Gate Sect Master hasn't figured out our identities yet?" Captain Wu asked, puzzled.
"You really are naive. Do you think the Ghost Gate Sect Master would let you go?" The King of Hell shot a glare at Captain Wu.
