I looked at Ruoxi, who wore a puzzled expression, sighed, and decided not to continue speaking.
"Little brother, this is bad," Captain Wu's voice came from outside.
Ruoxi and I turned our gazes toward the door.
Captain Wu rushed in, panting and looking anxious. I asked him what was wrong.
He pointed outside and said, "You need to go take a look quickly. I don't know what's happening, but those people are suddenly rolling on the ground."
My heart sank as I immediately thought of the people we had brought back from the secret chamber. Could something have happened to them?
Before Captain Wu could finish, I stepped out the door and headed to their quarters. As soon as I arrived, I heard agonizing cries; something had indeed gone wrong.
Upon entering, I saw that all of them were rolling on the floor, black mist emanating from their bodies.
Ruoxi and Captain Wu hurried over as well, and the expressions on those people's faces grew increasingly pained.
"What happened to them? When did you notice?" I asked Captain Wu.
He replied, "Just a minute ago, I went to get some food with the paper effigy Boss. I was about to deliver it to their room when I saw them like this."
I frowned, realizing they might have suffered some ordeal in the basement.
"Is there any way to help them?" I anxiously asked Ruoxi as I looked at their suffering faces.
Before Ruoxi could respond, the paper effigy Boss walked in holding a torch. We were taken aback; what was he doing?
"There’s no way to save them. They are no longer human. We need to burn them quickly; if we don’t act fast, they will turn into monsters. They are even more terrifying than the Ghost Gate Cult members—it's like a virus."
"Is it really that exaggerated?" I glanced at these people. Aside from having lost their arms, they still looked human.
The Paper Figurine Boss let out a cold laugh and said, "You'll find out soon enough."
With that, the Paper Figurine Boss took out a bottle from his pocket and splashed the contents onto these individuals.
In an instant, a foul odor filled the air, and the cries of pain from those people intensified. A cloud of smoke appeared before us, and it dawned on me that what we had just smelled was the scent of burning flesh.
"Take a good look at them," the Paper Figurine Boss instructed.
All our gazes converged on the ground. As the smoke dissipated, we witnessed a bizarre scene: scales began to emerge on these people's bodies, resembling those of fish.
"What is happening?" I was stunned. Not only did they have scales, but they also bore large, grotesque wounds that looked quite disturbing.
"Did you see that? If those wounds start oozing yellow pus, the smell will spread. If anyone here catches a whiff, they'll be infected and turn into creatures like them. At that point, you'd have more enemies, and it could endanger others as well."
I hesitated and looked at Captain Wu. His expression mirrored my concern. After all, we had exerted great effort to rescue these people; it felt wrong to just burn them.
"Wang Jun, you should listen to the Paper Figurine Boss. Burn them," Ruoxi urged me when she saw my indecision.
"Yeah, little brother, just burn them. It's for the sake of preventing more casualties," Captain Wu chimed in.
I gritted my teeth and nodded. Taking a step back to allow the Paper Figurine Boss to act, I watched as he showed no hesitation. He hurled the torch directly at those people.
In an instant, flames erupted on their bodies, sending sparks flying in all directions.
A great fire erupted from those people, engulfing them completely. Strangely, they showed no signs of struggle, remaining as still as corpses.
The flames burned for a long time before they gradually extinguished.
"Look at the ground," Captain Wu said in astonishment, pointing at a pile of objects left behind.
We turned our gaze and saw a scattering of fish scales on the ground. Were these things shed from those people?
"Look, those people have turned into fish monsters. If we hadn't burned them, they would have harmed many others," Paper Man Boss stepped forward and addressed us.
Looking at the pile of fish scales, my heart felt heavy and complicated, filled with guilt, much like a doctor who had tried to save a patient only to have them suddenly die on the operating table.
"What's wrong, little brother?" Captain Wu noticed my unusual expression.
I shook my head, assuring him that I was fine.
Suddenly, the floor beneath us began to shake violently, almost causing us to lose our balance. A loud noise erupted, resembling thunder but not quite.
"What’s happening?" I looked towards Paper Man Boss, since the disturbance came from his area.
Paper Man Boss furrowed his brow, his gaze sharpening. "Something must have happened outside the barrier. I need to check it out."
Seeing the seriousness in Paper Man Boss's demeanor, we followed him outside. When we reached the edge of the barrier, Ruoxi stopped me and said, "Wang Jun, let's not go out just yet. Let's see what's happening outside from here."
I nodded in agreement while Captain Wu stood beside me, momentarily stunned as he called out my name. "Wang Jun."
I looked at Captain Wu's stunned expression and smiled, saying, "Yes, I am Ruoxi's husband. Is there something wrong with her calling me Wang Jun?"
As I finished speaking, I deliberately glanced at Ruoxi, who also smiled back.
Captain Wu had a strange look on his face, but he couldn't quite pinpoint what was odd about it.
"Wang Jun, look, it's the people from above; some Celestial Officials have arrived." At that moment, Ruoxi's gaze shifted toward the barrier outside.
After hearing Ruoxi's voice, we all turned to look outside and saw a group of people appearing beyond the barrier. They were dressed just like those we had seen at the Feast of Demons.
What were they doing here?
"What are they doing here?" Captain Wu asked.
Ruoxi turned to us and said, "It must be related to us. Didn't Wang Jun mention that the Ghost Gate Sect Master hosted these people in his lair? They must be using these individuals to eliminate us because the Ghost Gate Cult members cannot enter here. Besides them, people from the Celestial Realm and Underworld can come in."
Ruoxi's words made my heart tighten. I still hadn't solidified my identity, and now these people had appeared.
Moreover, the Divine Power emanating from these individuals was greater than ours; dealing with them would not be easy.
"Little brother, if it comes to worst, we can confront them. We're not afraid of trouble," Captain Wu said.
I shook my head and replied, "No, we have many things to consider. These Celestial Officials have already allied with the Ghost Gate Cult; it's clear their intentions are ruthless. You have to understand that there are still people living here. If we act against them now, others will be caught in the crossfire."
Upon hearing this, Captain Wu was at a loss for what to do.
"Yes, we have many concerns," Ruoxi continued, "but you don't need to worry. The Celestial Official won't take action against us openly, but we shouldn't let our guard down."
I nodded. At that moment, I noticed a disturbance at the edge of the barrier; it seemed the Paper Boss was about to bring them in.
"How could the Paper Boss bring them in?" I asked in confusion. "Isn't that just adding trouble for us?"
Ruoxi smiled and explained, "He can't refuse them. This is an inn, and there's no reason to turn away guests. However, there is a rule here: no fighting inside. Don't worry; as long as we remain cautious of them, we shouldn't encounter any major issues."
I acknowledged her words. The Paper Boss led them inside, and our gazes collided with theirs.
Their eyes were filled with hostility; it was clear they had made some sort of agreement with the Paper Boss.
"Everyone be careful," Ruoxi warned us quietly, watching closely.
Captain Wu and I nodded in response. Once they entered the inn, we returned to our quarters.
Ruoxi stopped in front of our lodging and looked around. Captain Wu and I paused as well, asking her what was wrong.
"We need to set up a barrier here," Ruoxi said. "This way, everyone's safety can be ensured."
