Under the city walls, the Citizens who had obtained the petals were overjoyed and immediately consumed them. Moments later, I noticed dark shadows emerging from their bodies, resembling Evil Spirits.
I was somewhat surprised and asked Ruoxi what that was and how those Insane Citizens could have such things.
Ruoxi turned to me and said, "Because this Madness Realm is used by the Heavenly God to cleanse evil thoughts."
I was confused, not understanding what Ruoxi meant. Seeing my bewildered expression, Ruoxi explained, "You know, everyone has evil thoughts, even the Heavenly God. If the Heavenly God cannot cleanse these thoughts, they would turn into monsters and could no longer reside in heaven. Therefore, this Madness Realm naturally became a place for the Heavenly God to purify evil thoughts. Here, the Citizens, being kind-hearted in heaven, are not controlled by the evil thoughts that fall upon them; instead, they simply age rapidly. Haven't you noticed how many elderly people there are here? Just look."
Her words struck me deeply. I looked around and indeed saw many elderly individuals. But how could the Heavenly God do such a thing?
"Do those Citizens know?" I asked.
Ruoxi shook her head, a complex smile appearing on her face. "How could they know? After consuming the petals, their evil thoughts will be cleared from their bodies, and they will feel a great sense of comfort, believing it to be a blessing from above. Look at those who ate the petals; don't they seem much younger?"
I was taken aback and looked again. Those Citizens who had consumed the petals indeed appeared significantly rejuvenated.
I couldn't help but feel it was unfair for them. Ruoxi seemed to sense my thoughts and chuckled lightly. "There are many unfair things in this world. Come on, let me take you to see something."
I nodded and glanced back one last time, wondering if Bulei and her Dad had managed to obtain any petals.
Following Ruoxi, we arrived at a place unlike any other—a heavily guarded area that resembled a dungeon.
"What are we doing here?" I asked.
Ruoxi did not answer but walked inside, so I had no choice but to follow her.
Upon entering, we found ourselves in a winding path illuminated by lamps hanging at intervals along the walls.
After walking for quite some time, I finally saw an end ahead. However, Ruoxi stopped without proceeding further, a strange smile appearing on her face that sent chills down my spine. Instinctively, I took a few steps back.
Ruoxi's gaze suddenly fell to my feet, mocking me, "You've become my husband, yet you're still so timid? Do you even know who I'm going to take you to meet?"
I was taken aback and shook my head.
Ruoxi continued, "I'm going to take you to meet the leaders of the Ghost Gate Cult throughout history."
I was shocked; I never expected that the leader of the Ghost Gate Cult would be imprisoned here. Wait, how could there be multiple leaders? I had always thought there was only one.
Driven by curiosity, I followed Ruoxi into the depths.
Before us stood a massive pillar surrounded by chains. This was the only dungeon in this place. In the corner, I noticed a dark figure, as if someone was crouching there.
Ruoxi pointed to that corner and said, "That is the leader of the Ghost Gate Cult."
I froze for a moment, my curiosity reaching its peak. At that moment, I didn’t realize how close danger was creeping toward me.
I cautiously approached the iron cage in the center. Just as I was about to reach the edge, the figure in the corner suddenly moved, sending a shiver down my spine.
I swallowed hard. Before I could react, a chill breeze swept past me. Instinctively, I blinked, and when I opened my eyes again, I found a terrifying face staring back at me—especially those lifeless and hollow eyes. I jumped back in fright, but to my surprise, that face became animated with excitement, and dark energy began to swirl around her.
She was an elderly woman, but there was nothing warm about her; she exuded an aura of sheer terror.
The old woman was glaring at me intently. I glanced back at Ruoxi.
Ruoxi's face remained calm, which eased my heart. But what I didn't know was that in the next moment, I heard a creaking sound in my ears, as if something had snapped. I turned toward the source of the noise.
To my horror, the elderly woman stretched out her wrinkled hand and began to tug at the thick chains.
My heart raced with alarm. Just as I was about to call out to Ruoxi, I realized she had vanished.
My eyes widened in shock. Could it be that Ruoxi wanted her to kill me?
Suddenly, a force landed heavily on my neck from behind, and I felt as if I had been transported to another place. Pain rushed toward me, and in an instant, my entire world crashed to the ground. Almost immediately, it felt as if someone had stomped hard on my back, rendering me unable to move.
"Hehehe, you finally fell into my hands," the Ghost Gate Successive Sect Leader croaked, her voice raspy and ancient, reminiscent of a chainsaw.
In a moment, I was lifted by the Ghost Gate Successive Sect Leader, and I found myself face to face with her.
Her face was terrifyingly grotesque, covered in wrinkles and filled with dark little insects. I couldn't help but retch at the sight.
The Ghost Gate Sect Master cackled with delight as she extended her hand, revealing her sharp nails.
She pressed her hand against her face and made a cut across it.
From the wound emerged white worms.
The Ghost Gate Sect Master pulled out the worms, and a tingling sensation spread throughout my body.
This Old Witch couldn't possibly want to put those worms inside me.
The Ghost Gate Sect Master stared at me intently, a slight smile curling at the corners of her mouth, intensifying the tingling feeling coursing through me.
"Ah, are you afraid? Do you remember how your ancestors slaughtered hundreds of my Ghost Gate Cult disciples?" the Ghost Gate Sect Master said.
I was taken aback; my ancestors...
Before I could gather my thoughts, this Old Witch pried my mouth open and shoved one of the worms inside.
Suddenly, a wave of heat ignited within me, growing stronger by the second. Sparks erupted from my body, sending the Ghost Gate Sect Master flying backward.
She crashed against the wall and fell heavily to the ground, spitting out a mouthful of black blood.
She painfully lifted her head, a look of surprise appearing in her eyes.
She raised a trembling finger towards me, opened her mouth, and the Black Blood seeped out. "You, you are..."
Before she could finish, a sudden flash of fire shot towards us. With a loud bang, huge flames erupted from the Old Witch, incinerating her completely.
I was momentarily stunned and instinctively turned around to see Ruoxi standing behind me.
"You..."
Ruoxi walked over and pulled me up, placing her hand on my forehead and muttering a few words I couldn't understand. After a moment, I felt the pain in my body vanish.
I looked at Ruoxi in surprise, but then anger surged within me. How could she disappear at such a critical moment?
Wait, I seemed to realize something. Earlier, the Ghost Gate Sect Master seemed to be about to say something, but just as they were about to speak, Ruoxi appeared and killed the Ghost Gate Sect Master.
My gaze towards Ruoxi changed.
"What's wrong with you? Aren't you grateful? I just saved your life," Ruoxi said, ignoring my expression and turning her back to me.
I looked at the spot where the Ghost Gate Sect Master had died, feeling conflicted inside.
There was definitely something Ruoxi was hiding from me.
"Shouldn't you fulfill your promise and take me back to my world?" I asked.
Upon hearing this, Ruoxi turned around and looked at me expressionlessly. "Why are you in such a hurry? The formal Ritual Activity hasn't even started yet. There's still tomorrow. Besides, don't you want to say goodbye to your Bulei Sister and her Dad?"
I paused for a moment. Yes, after all, Bulei and her Dad had saved me before. It would be good to say farewell to them.
I had no choice but to agree.
Ruoxi took me away from there and brought me back to the Fragrant Pavilion. She advised me not to wander around at night and mentioned that someone would come to take me to see her early the next morning.
After saying that, Ruoxi left.
I glanced around and walked into my room, closing the door behind me. I immediately lay down on the bed.
I sighed deeply, feeling an indescribable sensation in my heart. If I returned to my original world, how would I explain everything to A Yao?
Lost in thought, I gradually succumbed to sleep.
The next day, a knock on the door woke me up.
It suddenly reminded me of the Ritual Activity Ruoxi mentioned last night. A sense of unease washed over me as I quickly got up, eager to finish it so I could return to my own world.
When I opened the door, I saw a row of women holding a tray filled with various ornaments, reminiscent of a queen's coronation ceremony.
