After we finished discussing, both Captain Wu and I felt a heavy sense of oppression. It was clear that the police were aware of the incident back then, yet it had been covered up.
The officer who handled the case at that time was Officer Chen, a highly experienced individual who specialized in unusual cases and possessed some knowledge of spells.
Records indicated that after the incident in that alley, it became desolate. Later, due to urban development, the houses behind that alley were scheduled for demolition to make way for a road.
On the day of the excavation, something supernatural occurred.
As the operator drove the excavator into the alley, something inexplicable happened—the machine suddenly reversed and crushed the operator's body, killing him instantly. This bizarre event terrified everyone present.
It was common knowledge that the place was haunted, and as rumors spread, fear escalated, leading many workers to refuse to continue. This situation left the city's leaders in a panic, and they handed this strange matter over to Officer Chen.
Determined to fulfill his duty without risking more officers' lives, Officer Chen bravely entered the alley alone. He intended to negotiate with the spirit of the deceased woman, hoping to appease her anger and leave peacefully.
To his surprise, he did find her spirit, and she agreed to his request. However, for reasons unknown, the next morning Officer Chen's body was found hanging at the entrance of the alley.
At this point, Captain Wu and I were left speechless.
This raised a troubling question for me: If the deceased woman had already agreed to Officer Chen's terms, why would she still kill him?
Captain Wu nudged me and asked, "What exactly did the woman in the alley want? And wasn't He Wei afraid to enter that place?"
I shook my head. "Not necessarily, Captain Wu. Don't forget that He Wei is part of the Ghost Gate Cult. These two entities are inherently sinister; perhaps they could even join forces."
Captain Wu furrowed his brow in silence.
Just then, an officer rushed in and exclaimed that something terrible had happened again.
At this moment, I furrowed my brows. Why did everything seem to happen at once?
After asking, Captain Wu and I learned that the body of the bride who had been in the car accident was missing. The family was very anxious and had reported the case.
Captain Wu instructed the officers not to panic, to follow the procedures for registration, and to calm the family's emotions.
Once the officers left, I asked Captain Wu if the bride's family hadn't buried her body and had instead left it at the site of the accident.
Captain Wu nodded in agreement.
Earlier, I had heard Captain Wu mention that many drivers had encountered problems at that intersection. Could there be a connection?
I thought for a moment and asked, "Is the place where the bride had her accident close to the intersection?"
Captain Wu replied that it was nearby. It seemed like I had an idea, so I asked Captain Wu to take me to review the surveillance footage of those drivers who had encountered issues; perhaps we could find some connections.
Captain Wu pulled up the surveillance on his computer, and soon enough, images of those drivers' incidents appeared on the screen.
I became alert, focusing intently on the footage. The scenes of the drivers' accidents looked quite similar, just as Captain Wu had described earlier.
Suddenly, I noticed a white figure swiftly darting past one of the indicator light poles in the footage.
I urged Captain Wu to pause the video immediately. To my surprise, a white shadow indeed appeared on the screen. I kept staring at this white shadow; for some reason, it felt somewhat human-like, albeit a bit blurry.
I pointed at the white shadow and asked Captain Wu if it was possible for the technicians to clarify what that shadow was.
Captain Wu agreed and called over a technician.
Soon, the technicians managed to clarify the white shadow.
When the image appeared, it startled the technicians; it clearly resembled the tragic figure of the bride who had died before.
Even Captain Wu and I were taken aback, gasping at the sight. This could explain why such a significant incident occurred at the intersection.
"I understand now," I said excitedly to Captain Wu. "This might be related to that bride."
Captain Wu looked at me in confusion, and I continued, "Did this bride not get married to her groom?"
Captain Wu nodded and confirmed that was indeed the case.
"Exactly! The bride died like this, and she must be unwilling to accept it. Her resentment is strong, so it's natural for her to cause trouble at the intersection. We just need to go there tonight and see what's going on."
That night, Captain Wu and I immediately went to stake out the intersection.
Before eleven o'clock, the intersection was very quiet and normal. However, after eleven, for some reason, the atmosphere around us suddenly changed; it felt cold and eerie.
I focused my gaze on the center of the intersection, where the traffic light was located, and I noticed some faint black mist beginning to appear.
I turned to Captain Wu and said, "It's here."
Captain Wu paused for a moment, glanced at me, then looked back at the intersection. "Is it that deceased bride?"
I replied that it might be since black mist had emerged around the traffic light. The presence of such things indicated that something was there.
Captain Wu scoffed and complained about how he couldn't see the black mist himself.
I chuckled and turned my eyeball around, saying, "Captain Wu, do you want to see this black mist?"
Captain Wu immediately became interested and said, "Do you have a way?"
I nodded and asked Captain Wu to wait for me here. Then, I went to find Sleeve Leaf and used the juice from it to apply on Captain Wu's eyelids, asking him if he could see anything now.
Captain Wu opened his eyes and looked towards the indicator light. Suddenly, he excitedly moved closer to me and said, "Little brother, I... I can see the bride!"
My heart skipped a beat. Had she appeared so quickly? Indeed, she had. However, the sight of the bride was terrifying; her face was almost entirely gone, with only an eyeball remaining.
I quickly instructed Captain Wu to hide. If she discovered us, both of us could be in danger.
Captain Wu nodded, and we kept a close watch on the Ghost Bride.
I saw the Ghost Bride emerge from the indicator light, drifting around the intersection as if searching for something.
Captain Wu whispered, "Little brother, what is she doing?"
I shook my head. Just then, the sound of a car approached from a distance, drawing both my and Captain Wu's attention. At the same time, the Ghost Bride turned her gaze towards it.
A bad feeling arose in my heart; this car might be in trouble.
As the car drew closer and was about to reach the Ghost Bride, she suddenly revealed herself to the driver inside. The driver panicked and began swerving uncontrollably. In that moment, tragedy struck—the driver's body was impaled by a falling steel bar.
If it weren't for our strong mental fortitude, Captain Wu and I would have screamed in shock because the scene was incredibly gruesome.
Moreover, an even more bizarre scene unfolded.
After seeing that the driver had died, the Ghost Bride entered the car and attached herself to him, leaning down to kiss his lips.
This left both me and Captain Wu feeling a bit awkward, and after a moment, the Ghost Bride was still kissing the driver.
I couldn't help but feel puzzled. Just then, the Ghost Bride rose from the driver, and at that moment, Captain Wu and I saw a white shadow emerge from him.
Suddenly, it dawned on me; the Ghost Bride was absorbing the driver's soul.
"Captain Wu, did you see that?" I asked.
Captain Wu nodded, confirming he had seen it.
At that moment, everything became clear to us. However, what did the Ghost Bride need so many souls for?
When dawn broke, the Ghost Bride vanished, and Captain Wu and I stepped outside as well. We still had a murder case to deal with, so we had no choice but to handle it first.
By the time we finished with that case, it was already noon.
Captain Wu and I returned to our lodging, hoping to get some rest. Just as we walked in, we happened to run into Uncle Tiger coming out. We greeted him before preparing to head to our room when Uncle Tiger suddenly stopped us.
