I asked Captain Wu what was going on.
Captain Wu furrowed his brow and said that recently, for some unknown reason, there had been numerous car accidents at the intersection. At first, everyone thought they were just ordinary accidents, but they kept happening without pause. It seemed that any car passing through the intersection at night, as long as there was a man inside, that man would surely die, while the women remained unharmed.
After hearing this, I suggested that perhaps Captain Wu was onto something, considering it was late at night and intersections were indeed prone to accidents.
However, Captain Wu shook his head and explained that it wasn't like that. They had checked the surveillance cameras, and the strange thing was that when cars approached the middle of the intersection, they inexplicably veered off course and crashed into the traffic light. What was even more terrifying was that above the traffic light, there was a metal frame designed to protect it, yet somehow it would fall down and impale the men inside the cars, leading to their deaths. Many men had died in this manner, and as word spread, rumors began to circulate about a vengeful spirit haunting the intersection. This frightened many people away from crossing there, causing congestion on other routes while leaving the intersection eerily empty. This situation could not be tolerated in the city center, so higher-ups assigned Captain Wu and his team to find a way to resolve the issue and quell the rumors.
Captain Wu had considered various solutions but none had worked. He suddenly thought about that intersection; perhaps there really was something sinister at play.
I pondered for a moment and asked Captain Wu if these accidents had only started happening recently.
Captain Wu sighed heavily and replied that he had encountered such incidents frequently lately. His department had essentially become the Supernatural Special Cases Department.
I couldn't help but chuckle and teased him that this was actually quite special.
Captain Wu shot me a glare and said it was anything but good. He hadn't resolved He Wei's case yet; how could he explain this to the families? Just days ago, those families had come to the police station in an uproar. Although he knew those missing persons had turned into ghosts, he couldn't just tell their families that. Even in death, people deserved to see their loved ones or at least their bodies. Without any remains to show them, how could he face the families?
As Captain Wu spoke, something flashed through my mind, and I pulled him up from his seat.
Captain Wu asked where I was going.
I didn’t tell him because I wasn’t sure if the bodies of the missing persons were in the cinema.
When we arrived at the cinema, I was surprised; it had turned into a ruin in such a short time.
Captain Wu seemed to have guessed my intentions and asked if I suspected that the bodies of the missing persons were here. I nodded and walked into Room Seven, with Captain Wu following closely behind me.
I stared at the Screening Room, recalling scenes of ghosts sitting there before. After a moment of contemplation, I excitedly told Captain Wu, "You should call some people over to move these chairs and dig underneath them; we might discover something."
Captain Wu was momentarily taken aback and said, "Little brother, this is on the fourth floor. If we dig under the chair, we might just break through the ceiling of the third floor."
I paused for a moment, realizing that Captain Wu had a point. If the connection between the third and fourth floors was thin, and someone happened to pass by on the third floor, it could lead to an accident.
After thinking it over, a perfect plan emerged in my mind. The ghosts that had appeared earlier must have been summoned by something, and the places they occupied were likely their "roots," meaning where their bodies were located.
As I spoke, another thought struck me. It seemed that every time those ghosts appeared, a movie had to be played. Could there be something in the Projection Room?
"I got it!" I exclaimed excitedly as I ran toward the machine room, only to find that the door was locked.
At that moment, Captain Wu walked up beside me and asked what was wrong. I pointed at the lock in front of me and urged him to open it; there had to be something inside that attracted those ghosts.
Captain Wu nodded, pulled out his gun, and shot at the lock on the door. A spark flew and a loud sound echoed as the lock clicked open.
I eagerly opened the door and stepped into the machine room. It was pitch dark inside, so I felt around for the switch and turned on the lights.
In an instant, I was stunned by what I saw.
The entire wall was covered in red Thai script. Not only that, but even the player in the machine room looked bizarre, with a black hole fixed on top that resembled a human head.
"Oh my God, what is this?" Captain Wu exclaimed.
I furrowed my brow; why was there Thai script here again? Was this related to the Ghost Gate Cult?
"Captain Wu, do you remember something?"
"What is it?"
"After the car accident, you should know who was behind it. At that time, we were overwhelmed with many things, so we overlooked a detail: the ghosts trapped inside the mud figures were taken away by He Wei. Although this cinema has been abandoned, it doesn't mean He Wei will abandon it," I said.
Captain Wu immediately caught onto some sensitive information and asked, "Are you saying that He Wei will use this cinema for something again?"
I nodded and turned on the player. Instantly, I noticed the black hole on the player suddenly rotating, facing the screen outside. Within seconds, I heard some sounds.
Thud, thud.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances. At that moment, a series of footsteps echoed towards us, capturing our full attention. Could it be that the ghosts had returned?
Sure enough, just as Captain Wu and I suspected, it was indeed those ghosts. In no time, the seats in the theater were filled with them.
"Hey, little brother, look! What's under those seats?" While I was lost in thought, Captain Wu nudged me and pointed at the seats.
I looked over and saw an eerie green light emanating from beneath those seats.
This only heightened my excitement; perhaps my suspicions were correct after all.
I turned off the player, and at that moment, the ghosts occupying the seats vanished instantly—a scene that Captain Wu witnessed clearly.
Before I could say anything, Captain Wu pulled out his phone and called the officers at the police station to come over.
I chuckled and said, "It seems that after spending so much time together, we've even lost our tacit understanding."
Twenty minutes later, the officers arrived. Under Captain Wu's and my direction, they moved the chairs aside and used tools to dig underneath.
Captain Wu and I were extremely tense, fearing that there might be nothing down there. Our eyes didn't dare to leave for even a moment.
After a while, a police officer screamed, and I rushed to his side with Captain Wu. The officer, pale-faced, pointed to the ground and said, "That's a rotting corpse."
Captain Wu and I looked over and saw the decaying body covered in various black insects, with white bones exposed.
We both struggled to suppress our nausea as we pulled the body out.
The moment the body was revealed, it’s no exaggeration to say that everyone present vomited because the stench was overwhelming. Soon after, the second, third, and fourth bodies were unearthed.
In an instant, the entire Screening Room was filled with a foul odor. I couldn't bear it any longer and stepped outside, leaving everything to Captain Wu and his team.
An hour later, the cinema was cleaned up, including everything from the control room. At the same time, Captain Wu notified the families to come and identify the bodies.
After all this commotion, it was already evening. I stayed with Captain Wu until the end, exhausted and sitting on the ground, gasping for breath.
Captain Wu tossed me a bottle of water and asked if I was okay.
I nodded, and a relaxed expression appeared on Captain Wu's face as he said, "Little brother, thanks to you, I've had a bit less pressure. The missing persons case is temporarily closed; we just need to catch He Wei."
I responded with a grunt. Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. To my surprise, it was an unfamiliar number.
I answered it and was thrilled to hear good news from the hospital: Uncle Tiger had woken up and was fine. He wanted to see me as soon as possible.
Excitedly, I jumped up and pulled Captain Wu along as we ran toward the hospital.
