I immediately ran up to the rooftop, which was vast and wide. As I approached, everything was shrouded in darkness, with only a few lights flickering in front of me. Then I saw a familiar silhouette.
It was A Yao.
A wave of joy surged in my heart, but something felt off. Why was A Yao dressed like that? She wore all white—white clothes and white pants, and the style seemed very casual. Suddenly, I felt a jolt; this style resembled Feng Jie’s so much. Could it be true what A Yao said—that Feng Jie had gotten involved with her?
I cautiously walked over, trying not to let Feng Jie notice me. After all, I wasn’t sure if Feng Jie had taken over A Yao’s body.
But before I could reach A Yao, she slowly turned around and looked at me with an icy gaze.
I hesitated; that look was too unfamiliar. This wasn’t A Yao. She had never looked at me like that before.
I immediately stopped in my tracks and said to the figure before me, “You’re not A Yao; you’re Feng Jie.”
To my surprise, the “A Yao” in front of me let out a strange laugh upon hearing my words. The sound sent chills down my spine. I gasped as “A Yao” took a step closer to me, her face twisted into a smile that felt more like a sneer. My heart sank further; what did Feng Jie want?
I could only retreat, unwilling to take any risks with A Yao. It seemed that Feng Jie had indeed entered A Yao’s body.
However, I found myself cornered. “A Yao” stopped and said expressionlessly, “Wang Niu, this is the life you owe to Feng Jie. If it weren’t for you all, heh heh, how would I have died? Why should you live so happily while I can only wander in the Underworld?”
As she spoke, blood began to flow from “A Yao’s” eyes, and her face instantly twisted into something terrifying.
I swallowed hard and turned my gaze away; the visual shock was overwhelming. But how could Feng Jie’s transformation be so drastic?
“Look at me, Wang Niu,” Feng Jie suddenly became agitated and shouted at me in a frenzied tone. “I saved you and saved A Yao! Why are you still afraid to look at how I died?”
Taking a deep breath, I slowly turned my gaze back to “A Yao.” At that moment, it was no longer A Yao’s face but Feng Jie’s.
Seeing me look at her, Feng Jie suddenly broke into an eerie laugh that felt insane.
Her eyes sharpened as if she were talking to herself or perhaps addressing me directly: “Do you know? I really envy A Yao. Why does she get to have the love you cherish while I can only be toyed with and then discarded?”
I pondered for a moment, wondering what Feng Jie meant.
Seeing me in a daze, Feng Jie smiled again, but this time there was a hint of sadness in her laughter. She said, "You all have no idea, right? Heh heh, I've suppressed myself for so long, always pretending to be the model student. I listened to my teachers at school and obeyed my parents at home. I've never been myself. Even on weekends, I worked part-time, living without any sense of self."
Her words stirred something within me. Although I didn't often interact with Feng Jie, I had heard occasional mentions of her from A Yao, and my impression was quite good. I never expected to hear such a different side of her.
Feng Jie continued, "Until I met a man. His presence brought me so much joy, but it also caused me great pain. Ah, why does he treat me like this?"
As she spoke, Feng Jie's expression twisted into one of rage as she glared at me fiercely. I swallowed hard and instinctively took a few steps back.
Then, I saw Feng Jie's face transform into that of A Yao, who collapsed. My heart raced as I quickly rushed to support A Yao.
In no time, A Yao opened her eyes. When she saw me, she looked momentarily confused before realizing she was on the rooftop. Surprised, she asked what was going on.
I didn't dare tell A Yao about Feng Jie's possession and quickly made up an excuse. However, A Yao remained skeptical. I insisted that she go down first; it was late, and staying here would make her sick. Reluctantly, A Yao agreed and followed me downstairs to rest.
Perhaps out of fear, A Yao asked me to stay with her. This was the closest we had ever been.
Although we slept together without crossing any boundaries, it filled my heart with happiness and sweetness.
The next morning, I woke from my dreams and opened my eyes to see A Yao's sweet sleeping face. My heart instantly warmed. I quietly got out of bed, washed up quickly, and headed out to buy breakfast for A Yao. However, as soon as I opened the door, I was met with a bizarre sight.
At the entrance lay items for a Ritual for the dead.
Suddenly, a surge of anger welled up inside me. Who could be so cruel as to place such things at someone's home early in the morning? Wasn’t this cursing someone to die early?
I disposed of the items properly and went to the security room to check the surveillance footage. Soon enough, a figure appeared on the screen—fully armed and wrapped up tightly; it was impossible to tell if it was a man or a woman. After placing the items down, they bowed several times at the entrance and seemed to mutter something before leaving. I had the security guard copy the footage for me and saved it on my phone before heading out to buy food.
With such an incident weighing on my mind, my mood soured naturally. After hastily purchasing breakfast, I prepared to head back when unexpectedly I bumped into someone. To my surprise, it was Feng Jie's mother. Feeling guilty, I apologized sincerely, but instead of accepting my apology, she glared at me coldly and said that I would pay for this one day before walking away.
Throughout the journey, the words of Feng Jie’s mother echoed in my mind like a spell, continuously looping in my thoughts.
I returned to my rented place, and at that moment, A Yao was already awake. Her face still bore an expression of unease. When she saw me come back, she sighed in relief and said, with a hint of grievance, that I must tell her whenever I go out in the future; otherwise, she would feel insecure.
A Yao's words touched me deeply. I nodded and handed her the items I had bought.
Just then, my phone suddenly rang. To my surprise, it was Captain Wu calling me. I immediately answered; it was unusual for him to call so early unless it was something important.
Before I could say anything, Captain Wu spoke urgently on the other end, "Little brother, something's wrong. It's serious. You need to come to the police station right away."
After saying that, he hung up.
My heart sank a little. I turned to A Yao and reluctantly kissed her forehead before rushing to the police station.
After all, I could tell from Captain Wu's tone that this was serious.
Upon arriving at the police station, I saw many officers gathered together; the atmosphere felt off. I hesitated to speak up when Captain Wu walked out from inside and spotted me, pulling me over.
The officers dispersed upon seeing Captain Wu, and I caught sight of what they had been gathered around—twenty corpses.
The sight of those who had died so tragically made me look away immediately.
Captain Wu sighed heavily and motioned for me to follow him into his office.
"Little brother, do you know who those dead people are?" he asked.
I paused for a moment and shook my head.
Captain Wu's expression grew even more sorrowful as he took a breath and said, "They were all police officers."
Captain Wu's words surprised me. How could so many police officers have died?
After a while, Captain Wu's mood improved slightly, and he continued, "Little brother, do you remember what I told you about that phrase in Thai? It truly is a curse."
I widened my eyes in disbelief and looked at Captain Wu. "Are you saying that the deaths of those officers are related to the curse?"
Captain Wu nodded and said, "All twenty bodies belonged to the officers who helped me dig them up. They all died on the same day, and when they died, that phrase was printed on the wall."
"The opener of the coffin is haunted by vengeful spirits; death is inevitable," I instinctively recited.
Captain Wu nodded in agreement.
This made me wonder—could it be that those officers were all killed by vengeful spirits? I asked Captain Wu what their autopsy reports said.
Captain Wu appeared even more helpless as he replied, "The autopsy reports for those officers didn't reveal anything. There were no traces at all, which forced them to suspect that it was related to that curse."
I pondered over Captain Wu's words for a moment before saying, "Can you take me to see that phrase in Thai on the wall?"
Captain Wu paused for a moment before responding, "Are you hoping to find some clues from that phrase? It's pointless. I've seen it myself; the Thai words appeared on the wall as if they just materialized out of thin air. They weren't written by anyone."
Although I didn't mean what Captain Wu implied, his words startled me—materialized out of thin air.
Afterward, we went to the homes of those deceased officers. They had all died in their own houses, which were in disarray as if someone had ransacked them. In addition, there were bloodstains on the walls, and that phrase in Thai was very prominent. For some reason, I felt a sense of deathly threat emanating from those words.
