The pattern was surprisingly that of a lotus flower. I gasped, realizing it was the same design as the one associated with the man in the surveillance footage. Uncle Tiger also noticed something and instructed me to take a picture of the pattern first. As I was snapping photos, Uncle Tiger entered the room, sniffing the air before his gaze settled on the iron rack where the body lay.
After I finished taking pictures, I put my phone away and walked over to Uncle Tiger. At that moment, I caught a whiff of a strong burnt smell mixed with something strange. Instinctively, I glanced around but saw no signs of anything burnt. Uncle Tiger suddenly spoke up, "It's this substance."
In his palm appeared a clump of black material that resembled soil. I sniffed it again and confirmed that the burnt smell indeed emanated from this substance. "Uncle, how could there be this stuff on the body rack?" I asked.
Uncle Tiger replied, "Because someone brought Corpse Mud here. That person broke the talisman sealing the female corpse and placed Corpse Mud on her body, thereby breaking the Shroud's power, which allowed her to get out of bed and walk."
I nodded, realizing why there was no Shroud on the female corpse; it had been burned along with the Corpse Mud. Uncle Tiger seemed very interested in the Corpse Mud in his hand, fiddling with it, which puzzled me—why was he so fascinated by it?
Then Uncle Tiger said something that left me stunned: he claimed that the aura from the Corpse Mud matched that of the mother of the Ghost Child inside the female corpse because their energies were identical. I looked at him in surprise as he led me out of the Funeral Home and directly to a villa.
By now, the villa had been surrounded by Captain Wu's men, and many police officers were busy inside. Uncle Tiger glanced around and instructed me to call Captain Wu. Just then, Captain Wu walked out; since there weren't many people around, he spotted us immediately and ushered us into the villa.
Inside, there were no coffins left; everything had been cleared out thoroughly. While we observed the villa, Captain Wu reported on its condition. After giving his instructions to Captain Wu, Uncle Tiger immediately sent people into the villa to remove any remaining coffins and burn them on site. They also discovered a lot of Joss Paper and Ingots on the second floor—items meant for the deceased—which Captain Wu wasted no time in burning as well.
After hearing Captain Wu's report, Uncle Tiger suddenly turned to him with a grave expression and said, "Wait! Didn't you see any Dead Infants in the coffin?"
Captain Wu looked taken aback and shook his head, stating they hadn't seen any Dead Infants; when they arrived, the villa had already been sealed off with no signs of anyone entering. But both Uncle Tiger and I sensed something was off—didn't Captain Wu notice the large hole outside?
Exchanging glances with Uncle Tiger, we silently moved to a corner outside the villa while Captain Wu followed us out. But when we reached our destination, we were dumbfounded; when we left last night, we hadn’t blocked up that large hole—but now it had been filled in with a new wall.
Captain Wu stared at it in confusion and remarked, "This doesn't make sense; how could there be a new wall here?"
"Someone must have blocked up the hole overnight and moved out any Dead Infants from inside," I speculated. "And all those who appeared last night are gone too."
"A woman? Where would there be a woman in this villa?" Captain Wu looked at me in surprise.
Ignoring our conversation, Uncle Tiger strode back into the villa. Captain Wu and I exchanged puzzled looks before following him inside. Uncle Tiger approached where he believed something significant had happened; his gaze fixated on the newly patched wall as if deep in thought.
We watched him quietly for some time until he finally shifted his focus from the wall to the floor. Out of curiosity, I looked down too and noticed several drops of cement leading to an area where they abruptly stopped.
Suddenly, an idea struck me—I jumped up excitedly and moved closer to inspect further. At first glance, everything seemed normal, but upon closer inspection, I realized that part of the floor was uneven—one side higher than the other.
I bent down to knock on it; surprisingly, it echoed back at me—was there space beneath? My excitement surged as I stood up to share my discovery with Uncle Tiger and Captain Wu.
Uncle Tiger's eyes lit up as he ordered Captain Wu to pry open that section of flooring. Captain Wu called for assistance, and soon enough they managed to lift it away revealing a hidden basement beneath.
Everyone present was astonished; who would have thought there was a basement concealed within this villa?
"Uncle, could this explain where all those missing Dead Infants went and where those people appeared from?" I suggested.
"Yes," Uncle Tiger replied thoughtfully. "But this basement might be very dangerous."
Captain Wu stepped forward to peer into the basement before drawing his gun from his waist. "I'll go first; better safe than sorry," he declared.
Just as he was about to descend into darkness, Uncle Tiger stepped in front of him with a serious expression saying, "Captain Wu, no! You might not be facing humans down there."
Captain Wu hesitated but was about to speak when Uncle Tiger continued: "To avoid unnecessary incidents, I'll go down myself. Wang Niu, you stay up here with Captain Wu."
With that said, Uncle Tiger began descending into the basement. I gritted my teeth and followed him down despite his protests.
Uncle Tiger paused when he saw me trailing behind him and sighed helplessly. "Wang Niu, why don't you listen?"
I lowered my head without responding; no matter what happened, I had to stick with Uncle Tiger.
Seeing my determination made him sigh again before instructing me to stay close and not act recklessly.
Once he agreed for me to accompany him down into the basement, my heart soared with joy as we entered what turned out to be an expansive space resembling a playground.
Around us were black chess pieces planted firmly into place; it felt like some sort of ritual was taking place here.
When my gaze landed on what lay at its center, I froze—there stood an enormous coffin capable of holding two people comfortably.
Uncle Tiger approached it cautiously; when he peered inside and saw who lay within, his expression flickered momentarily. Not wanting to miss anything important, I hurried over too.
Inside lay a woman who appeared completely unharmed with rosy cheeks—as if she were merely asleep.
"Uncle! How could there be a woman here? Could she be related to last night's events?" I asked incredulously.
Uncle Tiger shook his head before placing his hand over her nose; after several seconds passed his expression turned peculiar.
I remained silent beside him; clearly he had plans of his own regarding this situation.
Sure enough, just moments later Uncle Tiger crouched down again for another look inside the coffin before calling for my help in pulling something out from within.
I responded quickly and reached inside blindly until my fingers brushed against something solid—cold yet firm.
Without thinking much more about it I pulled hard—and gasped in shock when what emerged was none other than that female corpse from the Funeral Home!
However—the most alarming detail was that her once swollen belly had vanished entirely leaving behind only a gaping tear where clearly someone had extracted her Ghost Child from within.
I inhaled sharply while catching my breath as I glanced at Uncle Tiger who wore an astonished expression but quickly regained composure before asking how we should proceed next.
"The best course of action is to burn both this corpse and that woman lying in this coffin," he stated decisively.
I blinked in disbelief feeling as though I'd misheard him so I asked again: "But she looks alive! Her complexion is healthy—couldn’t she just be unconscious?"
Uncle Tiger didn’t respond but instead approached her directly pulling her out from inside while stripping away her clothing without hesitation.
I wanted to protest but found myself speechless at what felt like an inappropriate action—yet almost immediately regretted even thinking such thoughts moments ago.
