I initially didn’t pay much attention, thinking it was the phone ringing on the television. However, when I listened closely, I realized it was indeed my own phone ringing.
I was taken aback; could it be that I hadn’t turned it off properly before?
I picked up my phone, only to find the screen black, yet the ringtone continued to sound. Leaning in closer, it seemed to be coming from my phone after all.
I thought to myself, this is unbelievable! Even if this call is for me, how am I supposed to answer it?
To be honest, I had tried to accept the bizarre events that had happened to me over the past few days, but those occurrences had all been in a state of unconsciousness.
Now, with my mind clear, the fact that a call came through while my phone was supposedly off was astonishing, especially since my phone was out of credit…
Holding the phone, I stared blankly into space, guessing it must be that girl calling.
But I had no idea how to answer the call. I quickly turned on my phone, and surprisingly, the call hadn’t disconnected. Once the phone powered up, I pressed the answer button.
For me, this was a rather unique experience of answering a call. I felt a mix of anxiety and unease.
As soon as I pressed the answer button, just as I expected, a woman’s voice came through on the line.
“Get out of here quickly; that old lady died last night.”
“What do you mean? Which old lady?” The word "died" made me particularly sensitive. As soon as I heard it along with "old lady," my previously relaxed demeanor instantly shifted back to tension.
"The old lady who stole your box died last night due to some evil spirit. You were the last person she met, and she might come looking for you tonight. I can help you hold her off for a while, but remember, don't go anywhere near the East City Ruins."
My mind was in chaos as I hurriedly asked, "Then where should I go?"
"You should stay in the Pet Store for now. There's a black dog there; evil spirits generally won't dare to approach it. However, you need to leave the Wooden Box at the hotel."
As I received this woman's call, I felt completely exposed. No matter where I was, it seemed she could know my every move.
"Can you tell me who you are?" This was a question that had always intrigued me; I wanted to know the answer and was particularly eager for it.
But the response on the other end was, "Leave here now; if you wait too long, it will be too late."
Then the call ended abruptly. After hanging up, I thought I heard someone mutter "fool."
I sat on the bed in a daze. Before leaving, I glanced at the Wooden Box. Leaning on my cane, I exited the hotel; it was eight o'clock in the evening.
The old lady who stole my box actually died. Damn it! She stole my box and now wants to haunt me—what kind of grievance is this?
On the way, I hailed a Taxi and followed the woman's instructions to arrive at a Pet Store.
Sitting in the car, I thought, why do I trust this woman I've never even met when I don't believe Wang Wei or Zhang Dexin?
When I reached the Pet Store, I went inside and took a seat.
I had seen Lin Zhengying's ghost movies before and knew that black dogs ward off evil spirits. So, after entering the Pet Store, I began searching for a black dog and ended up staying right next to one.
During this time, the staff kept asking me what breed of dog I was interested in. I simply replied that I was just looking around.
This Pet Store was relatively large, and perhaps because it was still early, there were quite a few adults and children inside, all browsing the dogs.
But even by ten o'clock at night, I remained beside the Little Black Dog, staring at it while it stared back at me.
"Sir, this dog is a Teddy Dog; it's very smart. Would you like to buy one to take home?"
I thought to myself that I could barely afford to take care of myself, let alone a dog. Time passed quickly, and soon it would be eleven o'clock. I wondered if that old lady would come looking for me.
Feeling anxious, my gaze kept drifting toward the door.
At that moment, everyone in the Pet Store had left, leaving only me and a few employees behind.
The staff must have thought I was crazy; I had been there since eight o'clock, fixated on a Little Black Dog for over three hours. If I were them, I would think such a customer was insane too.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we are about to close."
Hearing those words made my heart sink. I glanced at the time; it was nearly midnight. The thought of going outside filled me with dread.
I had never believed in ghosts before, but now I was convinced they existed. It was all Wang Wei's fault for making me believe that there were indeed spirits in this world.
It was the dead of night, and I shouldn't have been out...
"Sir..." the shop assistant reminded me.
I was cursing under my breath. At this hour, with my cane, where could I possibly be going? That old lady really had to find me at this time.
Just as I was about to turn and leave, the little black dog suddenly barked.
After three hours of silence, the dog decided to make a sound. No way, I couldn't just leave like this! If that old lady showed up, I would be in big trouble.
In the end, I reluctantly bought the little black dog.
Once outside the shop, I held the little black dog tightly. This black dog was said to ward off evil spirits; surely the old lady's ghost wouldn't dare approach me with a dog by my side.
Holding the black dog gave me an unexpected boost of confidence.
The dog stayed quiet in my arms as I leaned on my cane and walked forward. It was past eleven now, and there were fewer people shopping; most were out for late-night snacks.
I walked aimlessly until I decided to sit down at a late-night snack shop. After taking a seat, I ordered a few random dishes.
However, when I turned my head, I was shocked to see someone burning ghost money right in the middle of the street in front of a barbecue stall.
At first, I thought I must have been seeing things. Even after rubbing my eyes several times, the scene remained unchanged.
It was strange; why would someone be burning Joss Paper in the middle of the road at this hour?
At that moment, Boss brought me some barbecue. I asked him, "Boss, who is that person in the middle of the road?"
Boss set down the barbecue and glanced at the road. "Bro, are you drunk? There's no one on the road."
That couldn't be right! There was definitely someone there. Just as I was about to argue, someone called out to Boss.
My gaze lingered on the road. Although it was nighttime, vehicles were still passing by.
However, none of these cars slowed down at all for the person burning Ghost Money in the middle of the road. I continued eating my barbecue, captivated by this strange sight before me.
As I munched on my food, a car sped past. The previous cars had all swerved to avoid the person burning Joss Paper in the center of the road, but this one seemed to head straight for him.
Just when I thought a car accident was about to happen, the vehicle passed by without a scratch, and the person on the road had vanished. I pulled my gaze back, but at that moment, my Little Black Dog began barking incessantly.
I looked down and gasped! An old lady was sitting directly across from me at my table.
My face turned pale.
At that moment, Boss brought me some drinks. Noticing my grim expression, he asked, "Bro, are you sick? If you're sick, you shouldn't drink."
I found myself breathing heavily, unable to respond to Boss. Didn't he notice that there was an old lady sitting across from me at my table?
Clearly, Boss hadn't seen her, but I had.
The Little Black Dog in my arms kept barking, and I tried to soothe it into silence.
At the same time, I was frozen in shock, completely stunned by the sight before me.
I didn't dare move. The old lady stared at me with a gaze that seemed to hold endless grievances, her face etched with deep wrinkles as if carved by a knife.
We remained locked in this tense standoff.
Finally, I couldn't help but tremble as I spoke, "What do you want from me? It's not like I caused your death."
Suddenly, the old lady reached out a hand toward me. The Little Black Dog barked even louder, and I feared she was about to attack.
Grabbing for my cane, I intended to make a run for it, but my foot was injured. As soon as I moved, I lost my balance and fell to the ground.
The Little Black Dog bolted from my arms, barking incessantly at the old lady.
Seeing me on the floor, Boss rushed over to help me up. But just then, the old lady suddenly said to me:…
