This was a case that elevated forensic standards to a world-class level.
Inside the building, three bodies were found in strange positions. Oddly enough, they had all been frantically fleeing for their lives, as if trying to escape something. Even more bizarre was that the only fourth person present at the scene was completely ruled out as a suspect.
Could it be that the murderer was not human?
The case was shrouded in mystery, with constant twists and turns. The deceased were the killers, the killers became the deceased, and one victim turned into another.
Until the very last moment, you would have no idea who the real culprit was. Could you handle that?
"The deceased shows no external injuries, but there is a significant amount of blood coming from his mouth and nasal cavities."
Fortunately, the forensic expert managed to get the body to "speak" at a critical moment; otherwise, this could have easily become a cold case.
On a day in 2015, a major homicide occurred in Siping, Jilin.
Investigator rushed to the scene and discovered a man on the stairs between the third and fourth floors, with a trail of blood droplets leading away. Following the trail led them to a room on the west side of the fourth floor, where another man was found lying face down on the floor next to an open window. Looking down from there, they spotted yet another man on the ground below.
The horrific scene left all investigators gasping in shock. Who could the murderer be? Why were their methods so brutal?
Initial investigations revealed identification cards and mobile phones belonging to the three victims. The man found on the stairs was named Liu Jie, while the one lying face down indoors was called Zhang Jian, and the man found on the ground below was known as Yan Dong.
According to insiders, these three were childhood friends who had grown up together and shared an incredibly close bond. So why had they ended up dead here?
To uncover the truth behind this tragedy, Forensic Expert Zhou, known for solving numerous major cases, took matters into his own hands.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the time of death for the three victims was quite close, likely between 1:00 and 3:00 in the early morning. The door to the room was intact, with no signs of forced entry. It was evident that the murderer had entered peacefully, significantly increasing the likelihood that the perpetrator was someone familiar to the victims.
In the center of the scene, there was a mahjong table, and the ashtray was filled with cigarette butts, indicating that gambling had taken place here. Therefore, those involved in gambling undoubtedly had significant motives for committing the crime.
The police split into two teams: one group began conducting interviews, while another, led by Forensic Expert Zhou, proceeded with further examinations of the bodies. Suddenly, it was noticed that the wounds on the two deceased individuals inside were remarkably similar, inflicted by a sharp weapon.
On the fourth floor, victim Zhang Jian had a fruit knife lodged in his back—there was no doubt this was the murder weapon.
Curiously, Yan Dong, found on the ground floor, had a different cause of death. He showed no obvious external injuries; however, there was a significant amount of blood coming from his mouth and nose. His belt was broken, consistent with injuries from a high fall and increased pressure in the chest cavity.
This victim was outside the building and must have fallen from the fourth floor.
The investigator initially concluded that all three individuals had been pursued by the murderer and fled upwards.
As the saying goes, you may not be able to run fast, but you must be faster than your companions. Liu Jie and Zhang Jian were caught and killed, while Yan Dong reached the fourth floor first in an attempt to escape through a window but accidentally fell to his death.
The fruit knife left at the scene would undoubtedly become crucial evidence; if DNA could be extracted from it, there would be a high probability of identifying the killer.
Further investigation revealed that both deceased individuals had numerous defensive wounds on their right arms. What could this mean? Just as everyone was puzzled by this anomaly, officers conducting interviews outside made a significant discovery: almost all individuals involved in gambling were ruled out as suspects—they might as well have written "I am not the murderer" on their faces.
When questioned by the Public Security Bureau, Chen Xiang was evasive and attempted to flee upon being found.
After prolonged persuasion and attempts to reason with him, Chen Xiang only admitted to participating in gambling and claimed he was well-known for his kindness throughout the region—how could he possibly commit murder? However, how could his series of unusual behaviors be explained?
The police believed that Chen Xiang might have been stubbornly denying involvement to escape responsibility.
Just as they prepared to continue their efforts to persuade him, forensic experts delivered news that completely ruled out Chen Xiang as a suspect. What could this mean? It turned out that forensic analysis concluded that the murderer was left-handed.
"The bloodstains at the scene were all located on the left side of the Criminal, so we initially judged that this Criminal is left-handed."
The resistance wounds on the arms of the other two victims came from the right arm, which indicates that the murderer used their left hand to wield the weapon, and Chen Xiang is not left-handed. However, the police believed that this guy was definitely hiding something, and with further persuasion and encouragement, he was eager to reveal more details.
It turned out that this gambling scheme was a trap set by Liu Jie and Zhang Jian, aimed at making Chen Xiang's good friend Yan Dong lose everything. The three of them planned to split the winnings afterward. However, Chen Xiang, driven by greed, wanted to keep all the money for himself and slipped away early, which led to him being mistaken for the murderer.
If this statement is true, could it mean that Chen Xiang discovered he had been set up and retaliated by killing? The Investigator quickly rushed to his home, and as soon as they entered, a photo caught their attention—Yan Dong was indeed left-handed, which explained everything.
However, handling cases requires rigor. The police examined the clothes Yan Dong was wearing when he was murdered and found multiple splatter and wipe patterns of blood on the front. Comparisons revealed a mixture of blood from Liu Jie and Zhang Jian.
Meanwhile, Yan Dong's wife received a letter sent by her husband before his death. The content read: "I regarded Liu Jie and Zhang Jian as lifelong brothers, but unexpectedly they have deceived me more than once, leading me to lose my house and all my savings in the gambling game. The debts I owe can never be repaid in this lifetime; I must take revenge."
On another front, after relentless efforts by the technicians, DNA was finally extracted from the knife—it belonged to Yan Dong. With this evidence, the entire sequence of events became clear.
After the gambling game ended, when Yan Dong realized he had been cheated, he took out the weapon he had prepared in advance and killed both men before jumping to his death.
One can't help but sigh; Yan Dong went from being a victim to becoming a murderer.
Thanks to the forensic expert playing a crucial role, the truth of the matter was restored, preventing innocent people from being implicated.
At last, the case was solved.
