Living Funeral
It felt a bit strange, yet oddly comfortable. The gaping wound in my chest seemed to be slowly healing, as if it had merely been scratched by "ghostly energy."
At that moment, my mind was still replaying the words I had just heard: "determine the universe, traverse yin and yang, walk the ghostly path..."
The more I recited them, the more familiar they became. Lin Xue's cries of anguish had not yet ceased. She turned to me and asked, "Chen Lang, what... what did you just do to me?" Hearing her call my name made me feel somewhat nauseous.
Lin Xue was enveloped in a faint red glow, lying on the ground and crying out in pain. "Chen Lang, please let me go."
I looked at Lin Xue in her current state but did not approach her. My body was covered in blood, and the Taoist beside me said, "Have you regained your powers?" I didn’t respond to him. Seeing that calling for help from me was futile, Lin Xue turned to plead with the Taoist instead, but he completely ignored her.
The Taoist muttered to himself, "I don't believe you've regained your powers. You were in such a state before; how could you possibly recover?"
I replied to the Taoist, "If I remember correctly, the Ghost Festival is coming up soon."
"And what do you plan to do then?" he asked.
"Of course, I intend to send you to the ghostly realm," I said.
The Taoist snorted coldly. "With your current state? You look so weak; I don't believe you've regained your powers." Despite his words, I could sense a hint of fear creeping into his demeanor.
He wasn't entirely wrong; I was indeed weak. Although there was a warm flow within me, I still felt drained. The fact that I managed to bind Lin Xue was somewhat unexpected.
I had some confidence in myself; if I backed down now, it would surely lead to my demise. Just then, the weasel chuckled and said, "There's no way he's going to die that easily." After saying this, the weasel burst into laughter but quickly began coughing from choking on its own amusement.
"Chen Fei, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and kill this despicable person!"
"Shut up."
Lin Xue's cries echoed in my ears as the Taoist looked at me with suspicion. He seemed to be having second thoughts but hadn’t fully retreated. Damn it, I cursed inwardly; the Taoist truly was a crafty old fox. He was clearly testing my strength. However, my physical condition was indeed dire; even standing felt unsteady. If I didn’t take a step forward, he certainly wouldn’t back down either. So I began to walk toward the Taoist.
As soon as I took a step forward, the Taoist retreated a step back. This confirmed my suspicions. However, the weasel, eager for revenge, said to me, "Chen Fei, what are you hesitating for? Haven't you fully recovered yet..."
Damn... this was truly a case of a useless ally.
I wiped the blood from my face. The Taoist stared at me for a few seconds before suddenly laughing. Seeing that smile made my heart sink.
The Taoist sneered, "Chen Fei, your acting skills are impressive; you almost fooled me."
Damn it, at this moment, even if I wanted to run, I felt too weak. The wounds on my body were healing, but not fast enough! The Taoist began to approach me, and as I watched him, my expression changed. Just as he was getting close, I shouted, "Stabilize the universe..."
Before I could finish my incantation, the Taoist started to retreat. I wasn't an idiot; even though I was injured and couldn't run fast, staying put would surely lead to my demise. As the Taoist stepped back, I took off running.
Behind me, the Taoist roared in anger, "You tricked me!"
At that moment, I couldn't care less about what was happening behind me; all I wanted was to escape. But after running for a short distance, someone blocked my path. He spoke lazily, "I thought you had really recovered enough to save yourself; turns out you're still half-baked."
I glanced over and realized it was a ghost. I certainly wouldn't consider this ghost a savior; if it wanted to harm me, escaping would be nearly impossible.
I felt a warmth rising from my dantian and asked the ghost, "What do you want?"
The ghost replied, "What do I want? It's just that I can't take on that stinky Taoist alone, so I've brought someone with me." After he spoke, Zhang Xun emerged from the woods, looking as pale as a sheet of paper.
Seeing Zhang Xun made me finally breathe a sigh of relief.
I walked toward Zhang Xun. He looked at me and asked how I felt.
I replied, "I feel a warm current flowing inside me, and my abdomen is burning."
Zhang Xun said, "That's right. You should rest for now." As soon as Zhang Xun finished speaking, the Taoist approached us. Upon seeing Zhang Xun and the ghost, he paused for a moment before saying to me, "Chen Fei, I didn't expect you to find help!"
I cursed at the Taoist, calling him a son of a dog. To think that I had been schemed against to this extent was simply insane and infuriating.
"Your grievances with our sect should have been resolved by now," Zhang Xun said to the Taoist.
The Taoist glanced at Zhang Xun and replied, "And you think you are worthy?"
The ghost let out a cold laugh. "What else do you expect?"
Tension hung in the air as both sides faced off. I stood behind them, curious about this ghost's background. Was he on my side?
"You are not qualified," the Taoist stated.
However, Zhang Xun didn't have time to waste on idle chatter with the Taoist. He drew his Peach Wood Sword and engaged the Taoist in combat. In terms of martial arts, Zhang Xun was indeed lacking, but with the ghost's assistance, they managed to reach a stalemate. I took a deep breath as chaotic thoughts began to swirl in my mind.
I slowly sat down and closed my eyes, trying to focus on the thoughts in my head. The image of the person who had crawled out from a pile of corpses and laughed stuck with me.
The figure among the dead began to speak: "What should those who cultivate the Way value most? It is the righteousness within their hearts. Without that righteousness, there is no meaning in cultivation."
I etched these words into my memory. At that moment, many ghosts gathered around him, standing before him as he continued to speak, almost like he was giving a lecture. I listened along, losing track of time. Gradually, the ghosts dispersed, and the images in my mind began to fade. I exhaled deeply; after hearing this person's words, I felt much clearer.
Just then, someone whispered in my ear, "It seems things are not looking good."
As soon as he finished speaking, I opened my eyes. Sitting next to me was someone chewing on a dogtail grass, appearing completely unfazed. I stared at him for a moment before realizing he looked familiar. After a second glance, it dawned on me that it was Du Feng.
At that moment, Zhang Xun and the ghost were being suppressed by the Taoist. Together, they were no match for him.
Feeling much better now, I prepared to step forward and help, but Du Feng pressed down on my shoulder and said, "Chen Fei, you should have notified me earlier; now look what trouble we’re in."
I replied to Du Feng, "I don’t know who you are."
As I finished speaking, Du Feng was momentarily stunned before responding, "Yours is the same." He added, "You didn't know before, but now you do. Rest for a bit; I'll go over." Du Feng walked away and quickly joined the battlefield.
Once Du Feng entered, I soon noticed two entities resembling Ghost Shadows following closely behind him.
"Ghost Pharmacist, you actually showed up."
Du Feng replied, "I had no choice; you've been too reckless."
The Taoist snorted coldly, "One must act for oneself to survive."
Du Feng retorted, "Then you should just die." As soon as he finished speaking, the two Ghost Shadows lunged at the Taoist, while Zhang Xun and the ghost stood aside, finally getting a moment to breathe.
The Taoist was entangled by the two Ghost Shadows, struggling fiercely and threatening, "Ghost Pharmacist, you'll regret this."
Du Feng stared at the Taoist and said, "If you don't die, that person will be displeased."
"The person?" The Taoist's expression changed after he spoke. I watched from the side as the good times didn't last long; the two Ghost Shadows that had been restraining the Taoist were quickly dispelled by two Yellow Talismans he produced.
The Taoist declared, "Today, I must break this taboo and kill Chen Fei."
