Living Funeral
The flashlight I was holding illuminated a pale hand reaching in from outside the window. Damn, it scared me so much that I almost fell off the beam. I gasped and shouted, "Who are you?" The hand froze in mid-air.
My heart felt like it was lodged in my throat as I struggled to catch my breath, staring at that hand without daring to relax for even a moment.
The window was made of wood and should have had a layer of paper covering it, but that paper had long since disappeared. Yet, I still couldn't see anyone outside; that hand just appeared out of nowhere.
I called out again, but there was no response. Damn it, this was really creepy. I kicked at the hand, but to my surprise, as soon as my foot made contact with that pale hand, it immediately grabbed my foot.
I had only intended to test the waters, but I never expected this to happen. I struggled fiercely until I finally gave up on keeping my shoe.
The knocking from outside continued, accompanied by someone shouting, "Is Chen Fei in there?"
I yelled back, "Is that you, Jiang Hao?"
Upon hearing my response, the voice outside replied, "It's me. You dropped your ID card. I heard some noise in here, so I brought it over. Are you okay?"
I asked Jiang Hao, "Can you check if there's anyone outside the window?"
Jiang Hao acknowledged and ran off. That hand was still hovering there, gripping my shoe, making me feel increasingly anxious. What on earth was going on? Was this a ghost? My mind raced as my body steadied itself on the beam again. Slowly, the pale hand released my shoe and began to retract. Then a voice spoke, saying, "I will come back."
I watched helplessly as that hand withdrew. Damn it, it scared half my life out of me. I took a moment to adjust my breathing; I felt completely unwell.
I swallowed hard to calm myself down when Jiang Hao's voice came from outside again. He shouted, "There's no one out here!"
I realized then that Zhang Family Village was indeed eerie. I told Jiang Hao to head back to the entrance of the ancestral hall while I started to run back along the beam. As I turned around, I suddenly came face-to-face with someone. Our eyes met—damn it, I was genuinely terrified at that moment.
I tried to control my emotions and cursed under my breath as I pushed the corpse's face away. Damn it, when did this hanging corpse get so close to me?
I crawled down and reached the entrance of the ancestral hall. I called out for Jiang Hao and asked him to push the door open. Jiang Hao obliged and gave it a shove.
The door let out a heavy groan as it moved, and I told Jiang Hao to stop pushing.
Jiang Hao listened to me and ceased his efforts. He asked, "Chen Fei, what were you doing in there? What caused such a commotion? If it weren't for the noise you made, I wouldn't have noticed you at all."
I asked Jiang Hao to step aside; I needed to get out. Before leaving, I turned back to glance at the shrine. It was eerily quiet inside, as if nothing had happened at all.
I wiped the cold sweat from my brow and looked toward the window where I had just seen a hand reach in. But upon looking again, I was met with a ghastly face. I cursed aloud, and Jiang Hao hurriedly asked what was wrong.
When I looked again, there was nothing there. My palms were clammy with sweat.
"I'm fine," I said. Instead of fully opening the door, I cracked it just enough to slip through. I turned off my flashlight and stepped out of the shrine.
Once outside, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. I closed the door securely, but Jiang Hao leaned in, trying to peek inside, only to be blocked by me.
"What’s in there?" he asked curiously.
I replied, "There's nothing in there; you’d better not look." Jiang Hao glanced at me and said, "Chen Fei, you really look pale and are sweating so much. You weren't scared, were you? You have quite the nerve." He handed me my ID card.
I'm not someone who likes to carry a wallet, so my ID and bank cards are usually kept separately. Sometimes when I pull out things, it's easy to misplace important documents.
I took the ID card from him and said thank you.
"Don't mention it," Jiang Hao replied. "After all, you just saved my girlfriend's life."
I nodded and turned to close the shrine door more tightly. After securing it with a latch, I also wedged a piece of wood in place.
My heart was still racing; it hadn't calmed down yet. The shrine felt too eerie; an ordinary person entering might not come out alive.
Jiang Hao looked at me and asked what was really inside that made me act so mysteriously.
I said to him, "You can explore anywhere in Zhang Family Village, but this place is off-limits. Trust me; you must listen to me." My tone was serious.
"Hey, man, you're being way too serious. We're about to have a barbecue. Do you want to join us?" Jiang Hao said.
I glanced at Jiang Hao, the sweat on my forehead and palms still hadn't dissipated. His earlier expression had been quite terrifying, and I felt a bit uneasy around him.
As we walked back, I asked Jiang Hao, "Does your girlfriend really have a family history of illness?"
Jiang Hao replied, "She probably doesn't. That's why I believe you. She's possessed; otherwise, do you think after you just exposed her, I'd still be handing you my ID? I'd have knocked your teeth out by now."
I thought to myself that Jiang Hao seemed to be a sensible person. I checked the time; it was nearly nine in the evening. I planned to visit Zhang Xun's house later.
The title of Zhang Family Village as Ghost Village seemed quite fitting. When we arrived, they had already set everything up. Strangely enough, Jiang Hao's girlfriend was nowhere to be seen.
Jiang Hao asked, "Where's Dan Dan?"
One of the women replied, "Dan Dan just went to the restroom."
I looked at the three women who remained here; their outfits had changed into Cheongsam-style dresses. I couldn't help but glance at them a few more times.
One woman said, "The quality of these clothes is really good. If sold outside, they'd cost at least a thousand bucks."
"The key is that they're also very clean. We look beautiful in them; this can be considered a little reward for our adventure," another chimed in.
The women giggled together.
I remembered that Zhang Xun's house number was 11 in Group 10. At that moment, several men were busy grilling chicken wings and other food. I was really hungry and planned to grab something to eat before heading over.
The night was pitch black, but a bonfire illuminated the area where we stood. Jiang Hao enthusiastically introduced me to several people.
About fifteen minutes later, Dan Dan still hadn't returned.
So Jiang Hao asked again, "How long has Dan Dan been gone?"
A woman said, "It's strange, Dan Dan has been gone for almost forty minutes. Why hasn't she come back yet?"
"Maybe she couldn't find the restroom?"
I glanced around; in the countryside, what restroom was there? One could just find a spot to relieve themselves. A few more minutes passed, and Jiang Hao grew anxious, thinking about going to look for her.
Just as he was about to set off, Dan Dan returned. She was dressed entirely in black, and her flashlight was off, as if she had been feeling her way back in the dark.
I looked at Dan Dan. Her hair was disheveled, and she wore a black Cheongsam, a dress that accentuated a woman's figure perfectly. At that moment, her slender form was on full display, but her face looked somewhat odd—pale to the point of being unrecognizable.
After glancing at me, Dan Dan became agitated and shouted, "Jiang Hao, why is this pervert still here?"
I thought her voice sounded normal; there was nothing wrong with it. It was just that she was too worked up.
Jiang Hao replied, "Dan Dan, it was really a misunderstanding."
But Dan Dan angrily retorted, "I don't care! Make him leave! He saw everything! Can you still tolerate this? Are you even a man?"
Jiang Hao's face turned grim at Dan Dan's words. Not wanting to make things difficult for him, I said, "I'll take my leave." I turned to walk away, but after just a couple of steps, Dan Dan suddenly rushed over and hugged me tightly.
