Living Funeral
The text message was from Brother Li. The content read, "Did I not tell you before? I am still alive. You are at the center of a conspiracy; take care of yourself."
After reading it, my anxiety heightened a bit. I quickly replied, asking, "What exactly is your conspiracy? Has Old Wang been dead all along? And why did I clearly see you all die, yet none of you are dead?"
After typing those words, I paused for a few seconds before sending the message.
I waited for Brother Li's response, but I knew he wouldn't reply that quickly, so I thought about putting my phone back in my pocket.
Just as I was about to do that, my phone vibrated. I quickly pulled it out again, only to find Brother Li's reply was just two words: "Wait."
I: ...
Damn it, wait for what? I'm an innocent person caught up in this mess, and now I'm being told to wait. Although my emotions were complex inside, I kept a calm exterior.
I sighed heavily as I stared at the phone screen.
I shoved the phone back into my pocket, but just then, a hand reached out from behind me. I quickly turned around, and the hand retracted swiftly.
Gao Qing stood behind me, her features well-defined; she was indeed a beauty. However, at that moment, I had no mind to dwell on that.
I found Gao Qing's behavior strange—first tasting my blood and then sneaking into my room.
All these actions made me feel that something was off about her.
Since it was summer, the daylight came early, and the room was already dimly lit.
I glanced at Gao Qing, feeling too lazy to speak.
Gao Qing asked, "Who exactly are you? Why do I feel something is off about you?" Her words were direct, and I explained, "Didn't I tell you before? I'm just an ordinary person."
Gao Qing insisted, "It can't be that simple. Otherwise, why would you be investigating that pattern?"
At this moment, Gao Qing was still unaware that her uncle had long since passed away. Naturally, I wouldn't disclose my reasons for investigating the pattern to her.
The events at the funeral home had become increasingly bizarre, shifting from initial terror to the current strangeness. It all felt as if an invisible tentacle was weaving a web of conspiracy, slowly leading us toward an abyss.
I took a deep breath and said to Gao Qing, "My purpose is the same as yours."
Gao Qing quickly picked up on my words and replied, "My goal is..." But then she abruptly stopped, saying, "You're not simple; you're trying to pry information from me."
Just as I was about to respond, the bedroom door opened, and Uncle Liang stepped out, saying, "Qing, Hua has woken up."
Gao Qing hurried over and said, "Let me take a look."
I followed her into the room.
After all, I had put in considerable effort to save Hua. The lights in the bedroom were on, and Gao Qing was already sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at Hua and asking gently, "Hua, tell your sister how you're feeling now?" Her tone had softened considerably.
The ropes binding Hua had already been untied.
I stared at Hua intently, and Uncle Liang did the same. However, after Gao Qing's question fell silent, Hua suddenly pointed at me and exclaimed, "It seems like there's something behind him!"
Upon hearing those words, I immediately reacted.
Everyone's gaze turned toward me, and my heart began to race. I asked, "What did you see?"
Hua raised a hand to rub her eyes and said, "Oh, I think I saw it wrong; the thing is gone again."
Uncle Liang let out a sigh of relief and said, "It must be that Hua has been entangled with the Evil Energy for too long and hasn't fully woken up yet; she probably misinterpreted what she saw."
Uncle Liang then asked, "Hua, do you recognize me?"
Hua quickly replied, "You're Dad, Dad! I'm hungry." Hearing Hua call him "Dad" and say she was hungry nearly brought Uncle Liang to tears from joy!
At his age of around fifty or sixty, the happiness of having a child in his later years was something few could truly understand.
Uncle Liang said, "Alright, Dad will go get you something to eat right now. And Qing, I'll prepare something for you all as well. Can you keep an eye on Hua for me? I'll be back in a moment."
With that, Uncle Liang stood up. Gao Qing remarked that if she knew she was hungry, it should mean she was fine.
I stepped forward and asked Hua, "Can I ask you a question?"
Hua still looked quite weak at that moment. Gao Qing advised me, "Maybe it's better not to ask right now; wait until Hua recovers a bit more."
Hua interjected, "Sister Qing is fine; let this brother ask."
Gao Qing glanced at me, and without hesitation, I quickly asked, "Do you remember what happened before?"
Hua shook his head, unable to remember.
It was normal not to recall things that happened during the possession; I sighed. Was this where the clues ended?
I had intended to show him a photo of the pattern, but I hesitated, fearing it might trigger something in Hua, so I decided against it.
With Hua's response, I chose not to press further.
At that moment, a delicious aroma wafted through the room. Gao Ling had also gotten up and said, "In the early morning, this is really going to make me hungry! Uncle Liang, your cooking is still as good as ever."
Uncle Liang replied, "Then let's all eat a bit later."
Earlier, Hua had seen something behind me, which must have been significant since that girl on the bus had also mentioned it.
I still remembered it vividly.
Before long, we were served the noodles that Uncle Liang had prepared. Hua got out of bed and devoured three bowls in one go; it seemed he was truly starving.
Uncle Liang looked at Hua with joy and said, "Qing, Ling, and this brother here, thank you all so much. Without you, I don't know what would have happened to Hua."
Gao Qing replied, "Uncle Liang, this is what we should do."
However, Uncle Liang then pulled out a few red envelopes from his pocket and said, "This is a token of appreciation for your hard work. Though it's not much, it's my heartfelt gesture."
Gao Ling reached out to take them, but Gao Qing slapped her hand away. Gao Ling recoiled in pain and shot an angry glare at Gao Qing.
Gao Qing smiled as she said, "This time my parents let me come over. If they find out I took your money, they'll definitely kill me."
Uncle Liang replied, "You don't have to worry. Just let them come to me when the time comes."
He handed over the red envelope again. Gao Ling was quick to grab it this time and thanked Uncle Liang before passing my share to me.
Since the situation at the funeral home was unclear, no one had given me my salary, so this money was quite important to me. I accepted the red envelope.
Gao Qing shot a glare at Gao Ling and said, "You should take Uncle Liang's money too."
Gao Ling hesitated, saying it was Uncle Liang's goodwill and it wouldn't be right not to accept it... But Gao Qing snatched the red envelope from our hands and returned it to Uncle Liang.
Gao Ling and I exchanged glances, both speechless.
Gao Qing insisted, "Uncle Liang, I really can't accept your money. If you feel bad about it, just introduce us to a business opportunity so my useless brother can earn some money."
Upon hearing the words "useless brother," Gao Ling immediately retorted, "Hey, what do you mean by 'your brother'!"
Gao Qing replied, "Isn't that the truth?"
"You..."
Gao Ling looked like she was about to explode with anger.
Uncle Liang chuckled and said, "You two have been bickering since you were kids; it's time to take a break." After finishing that sentence, he continued, "Actually, I do have a strange case here. The family has money; it's the daughter of a friend from my business circle. She's been feeling something strange at night—sleep paralysis—for the past seven or eight nights. I didn't pay much attention to it before because of what happened with Hua, but now that you're here, I remembered. If you can solve this issue, I'm sure there will be a reward."
Gao Qing listened intently and then said, "Sleep Paralysis?"
Gao Ling interjected, "As long as Uncle Liang can make money, I'll take this job. Uncle Liang, contact the Client now; we need to go check it out."
Uncle Liang nodded.
Gao Qing shot a glare at Gao Ling but said nothing more.
Uncle Liang quickly got through on the phone. After a brief exchange, he hung up and walked over to us. "They're in a hurry over there. If you agree, we need to head over right now."
Gao Ling immediately agreed and came over to pull me along. "Uncle Liang, send me the Client's address and phone number!"
"Sure," Uncle Liang replied.
With Gao Ling leading the way, we headed downstairs, with Gao Qing following closely behind.
Before long, we arrived at a villa area. After getting out of the car, Gao Ling dialed a number, and we soon entered one of the villas.
However, as soon as we stepped inside, we heard a series of intermittent cries…
