Chapter 5: Journey to the Xianjian Sect
On the unified Ranking List of the Twelve Cities, there were also the Honor Points Leaderboard, Wealth Ranking, and Equipment Rankings. The rewards for these three Ranking Lists consisted of a small amount of Diamond Spirit Coins and materials. Lian Yun was not yet ranked high enough to be concerned about them, even if he could be.
After deciding not to pursue the Ranking Lists any further, Lian Yun began focusing on the main quest.
Although the main quests were one-time tasks, completing them at higher ranks would yield greater rewards. However, many Dungeons required the completion of certain main quests before one could challenge them, so Lian Yun did not dwell on it too much.
He spent half a day wandering around Xianyang City, running errands such as delivering messages or buying bread.
For tasks like hunting a specific Chaos Beast outside the city to obtain materials, Ma Wenlong had already prepared for Lian Yun's Peak of Kings mission. Thus, Lian Yun completed his previous Monarch-level tasks and then visited the Treasure Alliance to gather some materials for Sovereign Quests. This allowed him to elevate his tasks to Medium Monarch level, earning him a million honor points and nearly ten million White Spirit Coins.
Although Emperor Level missions offered high rewards, Lian Yun's million honor points were boosted by an additional twenty-eight percent bonus.
It's worth noting that ranking rewards did not count as missions and therefore did not receive bonus rewards.
The gains were substantial, but that was about it; after all, one-time missions could not be claimed again. Most of what remained were tedious chain quests. While they offered Honor Points as rewards, they were not significant enough for Lian Yun to pay much attention to them. He simply had Ma Wenlong gather the necessary materials.
After completing these trivial tasks, he moved on to the Guild Mission Officer and exclusive Dungeon missions. These were large-scale events requiring High Emperor-level overall strength, but Lian Yun managed to complete them alone.
Afterward, Lian Yun adjusted himself at home for a while before taking his extraordinary sword—Feihong—and heading to Luoyang City.
He casually inquired at some stalls in the square and learned about the general situation of the Xianjian Sect. He discovered that there was a base nearby but chose not to visit it and instead left the city directly.
Having been in Yin Yang City for nearly three months now, although he had ventured out of the village during his time in the novice area, he had yet to step outside the city since arriving at this Famous City.
It could be considered a form of experience; Lian Yun left the city alone.
Outside the city walls, in stark contrast to the vibrant life within, there were numerous wooden structures—disorderly, dilapidated, and aged, accompanied by a lingering stench.
After all, most of the people inside the city were at least of kingly status, while Yin Yang City had been established for over a hundred years. There were still quite a few individuals within Yin Yang City who were not of kingly status.
Among those who were not kings, many had some background, having joined the forces of their elders. Those without any lineage were often taken in by other Fortress-level factions, becoming the lowest members of those groups, either as workers or slaves.
The ones who remained near the city walls were mostly disabled, elderly, or otherwise useless individuals. Thus, it was somewhat normal for this area to be dirty and foul-smelling.
However, Yin Yang City did show some humanity; there were Terracotta Army units patrolling the area to maintain order. During outbreaks of Chaos Beasts or Beast Tides, they would allow these people to enter the city for refuge.
To be honest, such situations also existed in human cities outside. However, those without power or support mostly lived underground. This was partly because being deep underground reduced the birth of Spirits and also provided a sense of safety.
Lian Yun had visited underground cities in the outside world several times; this might be one source of his desire to protect humanity.
Now, with a heavy yet somewhat indifferent heart, Lian Yun walked through several streets in this slum before officially leaving the city behind.
The wide main road was bustling with carriages and pedestrians—some were merchants, others belonged to different Fortress factions, and some were city dwellers returning from adventures outside or from hunting Chaos Beasts.
Lian Yun moved like a traveler; although he did not look around much, he often observed his surroundings, taking in the culture and scenery. Unbeknownst to him, he had already traveled ten miles away from Luoyang City.
As he continued forward, Lian Yun noticed that the number of travelers on the road dwindled, and most appeared to be in a hurry.
It was likely that they had left the safety of the city behind.
Next, Lian Yun could only anticipate one thing: encountering highway robbers. This was a common occurrence in the outside world, especially in a place like Yin Yang City, known for its chaos.
What he didn't expect was to run into them so soon, and right away, there was a Monarch among them.
Having traveled only about twelve miles from Luoyang City, with still over eighty miles to go before reaching the Xianjian Sect, Lian Yun found himself confronted by a group of robbers on the road between two mountains.
"This road is mine; this tree is mine. If you want to pass through here, leave behind some toll."
With that declaration, three robbers appeared before Lian Yun, led by a Scarred Man who had just arrived at the Monarch level.
The Scarred Man said, "You look unfamiliar, friend. May I ask where you come from and where you are headed?"
"I come from Xianyang City and am on my way to visit the Ten Thousand Swords Sect," Lian Yun replied with a calm smile.
"Visiting the Ten Thousand Swords Sect? Just you? Hahaha!"
"Haha, how arrogant!" The men behind the Scarred Man laughed heartily. It was well-known that even their leader did not have the qualifications to visit the Ten Thousand Swords Sect.
The Scarred Man smirked and said, "Although Huang does not wish to easily offend major powers or strong individuals, are you sure your words won't attract unwanted attention?"
"I am Bai Yun, here at Xiao Jun's invitation to visit the Ten Thousand Swords Sect. I speak nothing but the truth."
As Lian Yun was still not finished, several of the robbers began to flee for their lives. The Scarred Man with the Surname Huang was initially startled, but as he looked closely at Lian Yun, his fear only grew.
However, being a Monarch, he maintained his composure. The Strongman calmly said, "So it is Bai Yun. I apologize for any offense and hope for your understanding."
With that, he continued to back away from Lian Yun until he was several hundred meters away before turning to escape quickly.
Lian Yun shook his head in disbelief but chose not to dwell on it and continued forward.
This group of robbers was a typical example of those who bully the weak and fear the strong, yet Lian Yun did not choose to kill them.
Firstly, killing these individuals would inevitably lead to others taking over Sword Mountain. Secondly, the Scarred Man and his companions displayed some level of decorum; they bore little malice or resentment, indicating that although they were robbing, they did not kill indiscriminately.
In a situation where it was impossible to eliminate all the robbers, these individuals were somewhat preferable to those who were truly vicious.
The Xianjian Sect had not eradicated all the robbers along the road from their Sect to Luoyang City for this very reason.
As long as the other party did not go too far, Lian Yun would refrain from taking action.
