Chapter 19: Locust or Insect Emperor
A hundred formations transformed into a mist of blood in an instant, which then converged in the center, revealing a very strange creature.
It had a humanoid shape, but its head was adorned with two enormous compound eyes and a mouth resembling that of an ant, equipped with two massive mandibles. Its arms and legs were similar to those of a human, but covered in a layer of exoskeleton that gleamed with a strong metallic luster, giving off an impression of extreme sturdiness.
Moreover, it lacked palms and soles, having only three fingers and three toes, each tipped with claws as long as fingers. On its back were two pairs of wings, one thick and one thin.
Additionally, when it appeared, its abdomen was severely swollen and blood-red, but it quickly shrank to reveal eight segments of abdominal muscles covered by an exoskeleton.
Although its form was quite similar to that of a human, anyone could tell at a glance that this was a Locust.
However, at this moment, few cared about what species it belonged to; they were more concerned about its power. Instantly killing ten thousand people and devouring them, leaving behind thousands of sets of clothes as clean as if washed—what kind of power was this?
Even if it wasn't a Monarch, its lethality surpassed that of one.
Furthermore, even though its strength was difficult to quantify, one thing was clear to everyone: its speed absolutely exceeded that of a Monarch.
Understanding this fact caused the once-disciplined army to instantly turn into a disorganized mass. Everyone and their Spirits became deserters, fleeing in all directions.
Although members of the Han Clan shouted desperately for everyone to regroup and retreat together, at that moment, no one paid attention.
Because almost everyone had witnessed the earlier scene where over ten thousand people were instantly turned into blood mist and devoured; that was no force that could be resisted through unity. Gathering would only lead to quicker deaths.
However, scattering was even more dangerous because three hundred butterflies, three hundred cicadas, three hundred dragonflies, and one hundred blood mosquitoes had also spread out to kill indiscriminately.
"Organize yourselves; escape as much as you can!"
Lian Yun appeared ten meters away from the Humanoid Locust and said calmly, "If calculations fail, do you really think it's appropriate to take matters into your own hands?"
Though his tone was relaxed, he was tense all over, clearly on high alert. Just moments ago, he had only seen a shadow rush into the crowd without witnessing the opponent's killing methods.
While he had previously considered whether or not to save these people, at this moment he rushed forward without a second thought.
In the distance, Eastern Sword appeared slightly taken aback, yet a mysterious smile crept onto his face. An invisible sword manifested beneath him, lifting him up as Sword Control enabled him to soar through the air. He struck down several Flying Demons and called out to those below, "Someone is covering your retreat. Follow the commands of the Han Family personnel and fight while you withdraw, or you will all die!"
"Who is that person?" a member of the Han Clan couldn't help but ask.
However, Eastern Sword ignored the question and moved on, flying to another location to strike down more Flying Demons while repeating the same warning.
The strength of these individuals was not low; however, facing the Locust was not something that could be resisted merely by unity. Against a small number of Flying Demons, they could still hold their ground.
If it weren't for the unfathomable power of the Locust, Eastern Sword would have been able to kill it and then regroup for a counterattack instead of simply retreating.
Eastern Sword lacked spiritual energy. Although he possessed Sword Intent, he had little experience fighting Evil Spirits. Thus, he could only knock back the Evil Spirits until those below gathered together and formed a defensive capability before making his swift exit to rendezvous with Lian Yun.
However, Lian Yun had already engaged in battle with the Locust twice. Although it seemed she could still hold her ground, all those incapacitated on the ground had been killed or devoured by the Locust. It was evident that Lian Yun was still managing well against it.
As Eastern Sword arrived, a barrier of sword energy enveloped both of them.
Yet Lian Yun remained fixated on the Humanoid Locust and said solemnly, "It's useless. Its speed is too fast; any slight gap will be breached. Put it away to avoid wasting energy."
"Did it respond to you just now?"
Lian Yun's earlier question had no real basis. Although this Locust possessed considerable intelligence and cunning, how could it compare to humans or even to the Han Family, known for their exceptional command in battle?
Among humans, countless intelligent beings were no match for members of the Han Family; let alone this Locust, whose knowledge might not be extensive.
Thus, both Lian Yun and Eastern Sword believed that this Humanoid Locust likely felt its schemes were utterly ineffective against humans and became enraged enough to take matters into its own hands.
Lian Yun shook his head and then looked at the motionless Humanoid Locust facing him while allowing the Evil Spirits on the ground to pass by on either side.
After their earlier confrontation, he was barely keeping pace with its speed.
To be honest, Lian Yun felt somewhat fortunate that the Evil Spirits on the ground had not attacked him; otherwise, he wouldn't have had any energy left to care for others. Yet he knew he had to stay; otherwise, those behind him would surely be slaughtered by this Humanoid Locust.
The main concern was that this Humanoid Locust gave Lian Yun and Eastern Sword the impression that it would evolve further. Once it fully evolved, even a Demon Emperor might not stand a chance against it. Without an emperor among humans, they seemed even less likely to be its opponents.
From its current ability to devour endless human beings, it was clear that this Locust could not be allowed to continue evolving.
Thus, the two of them needed to lead it as far away from Fengdu as possible, hoping that some Monarchs would be able to kill it.
However, with it remaining still, Lian Yun and his companion dared not make any rash moves. Its speed was simply too great; if it attacked first, they might still have a chance to defend themselves. But if they acted first, they would easily expose their weaknesses. If it seized upon any openings, they could find themselves in a life-or-death situation at any moment.
Moreover, although the Humanoid Locust was turned sideways to them, beneath its enormous compound eyes, both felt as if they were being scrutinized directly. This made them hesitant to entertain any thoughts of launching a sneak attack from behind.
For now, they could only wait for the creature to strike first and see if they could identify any weaknesses.
Yet both sensed that this Locust had evolved to such a degree that even if it had vulnerabilities, their current strength was insufficient to exploit them.
Though feeling helpless, they had no choice but to give it a try.
At the same time, Lian Yun activated the Cloud Emperor's Order, an item he had not used since entering Fengdu. This artifact provided a twenty percent boost to spiritual power and was his only trump card in daring to confront the Humanoid Locust.
As for the Eastern Sword, while its power was extraordinary and its speed even surpassed Lian Yun's, its combat experience was still too limited.
