Chapter 18: Seizing the Opportunity and the Arrival of Terror
With the presence of members from the Han Family, it is easy to understand how an army composed of hundreds of thousands from the Demon Clan can be so organized and unified.
It is known that a single member of the Han Family can command at least one hundred thousand troops. Therefore, with a formation of one hundred Han Family members, commanding around one million soldiers is clearly more than sufficient.
As the Evil Spirits retreated, the army advanced a step forward. Just as the second unit of the front line began to move out, the Evil Spirits surged forward again, causing the leading troops to immediately halt.
It was clear that this was the shortest distance the army could advance. Thus, while they did not move forward, their deployment was adjusted.
The front line began to rearrange itself, with ten people tightly forming a wall ten meters long, creating five layers in total for a hundred individuals, with a gap of one body length in between each layer. Following this were additional ten-meter walls of people, and so on.
The entire army spanned one mile wide, consisting of only five thousand soldiers. However, there were three tiers in the front line, totaling fifteen thousand troops.
The fourth tier was scattered, while the fifth, sixth, and seventh tiers formed tight formations again. The eighth tier was once more scattered.
This arrangement effectively meant that four tiers counted as one wave, resulting in a total of five waves with special tier formations among the hundred thousand troops.
Notably, each family or faction had members distributed across twenty tiers. Thus, while the entire army appeared orderly and unified, their attire was a dazzling array. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of Spirits were layered above the heads of these hundred thousand soldiers.
However, before the human army could fully deploy, the topmost Demon Army began to wail mournfully, expressing extreme reluctance. Yet their ranks were not high; their intelligence was even lower. They simply obeyed commands from their contract master and charged toward the Evil Spirits below.
At that moment, several figures suddenly appeared beneath the Blood Spirit Fruit Tree—several Spirits.
Among them, three individuals quickly plucked a Blood Spirit Fruit and retreated immediately. Four Spirits also scrambled for a fruit before vanishing into the ground. Meanwhile, two others alongside the Three Ghosts sought to gather one or two more fruits.
However, five Blood Mosquitoes descended simultaneously upon the heads of the two, and in the next moment, they were reduced to mere skeletons, completely devoid of any flesh or blood. The three Spirits were utterly consumed, leaving not a trace behind.
At first, a few in the army roared in anger, "Fools!"
But soon, nearly the entire army echoed with shouts of "Scoundrels!"
The force of their outrage was so overwhelming that it startled thousands of Evil Spirits into retreating three steps.
The reason for this uproar was simple: the seven or eight Blood Spirit Fruits that the two had harvested were also devoured by the five Blood Mosquitoes.
Originally, there weren't enough Blood Spirit Fruits to go around, as Lian Yun had already taken thirty. Now with another seven or eight consumed by the Blood Mosquitoes, their distribution would become even more uneven.
In a situation where some rejoiced while others lamented, the army did not seize the moment to attack but instead regrouped.
Dozens of factions chose to withdraw. The departure of thousands reduced the army's size by a tenth in an instant.
The remaining factions then adjusted themselves; while the length and formation of the army remained unchanged, its width significantly decreased.
Lian Yun and Eastern Sword paid little mind to this and instead observed the swarm of Blood Mosquitoes. Eastern Sword lamented, "What a pity about the three Burrowing Spirits."
Spirits were a special type of Magnetorheological Fluid, and Earth itself was a massive magnet. Normally, while Spirits could pass through walls and objects, they could not burrow underground. If they attempted to do so, they risked being bound by Earth's magnetic forces and subsequently disintegrated and assimilated. Generally speaking, Spirits below the rank of Ghost King avoided touching the ground whenever possible, let alone burrowing underground.
Of course, there were exceptions; some Spirits could indeed possess burrowing abilities, but such cases were exceedingly rare. This illustrates just how scarce burrowing Spirits truly were.
With all the Major Powers of Huaxia gathered together, they could only muster seven or eight Burrowing Spirits to validate this point.
Thus, in a certain sense, if the number of Human Sovereigns were sufficient, a single Burrowing Spirit would seem to be even more precious than a Blood Spirit Fruit.
It is important to note that the effect of the Blood Spirit Fruit is to enhance the physique of a ruler, making it easier for them to break through to Monarch status. In the past, due to the extreme rarity of Blood Spirit Fruits, those who used them were inherently exceptional individuals, creating the illusion that a single Blood Spirit Fruit could produce a Monarch.
Although there had been no previous failures, it was not absolute that a Blood Spirit Fruit could create a Monarch; however, the Burrowing Spirits that could tunnel underground were indeed scarce.
Regrettably, it was of no use; the Eastern Sword could not cultivate spiritual power, and the three Spirits had already perished beyond revival.
Meanwhile, after readjusting, the army was ready to move again. This time, however, no one was dispatched. Yet in front of the army, dozens of threads extended toward the Blood Spirit Fruit.
It seemed that Burrowing Spirits were maneuvering beneath with these threads.
Just as the threads were about to reach the center, several Blood Mosquitoes appeared ahead of their advance. Their long "straws" penetrated halfway into the ground, and then all threads ceased moving. After several wails echoed from within the army, everything returned to silence.
However, three hundred butterflies began to flap their wings, releasing a colorful powder that drifted toward the army.
Above the army, the top two layers of Spirits began to stir violently, creating gusts of wind that blew clouds of dust back toward the Evil Spirits.
Perhaps this was the moment that members of the Han Family had been waiting for. The powder from the butterflies was effective not only against humans and Demon Clans but also against Evil Spirits.
Before that powder could fully return to the Evil Spirits' side, the human forces on the ground had already begun their charge.
As soon as the human forces crossed the shortest distance into the range of the Evil Spirits, the Evil Spirits charged forward without a care. This caused them to be affected even more rapidly by the Butterfly Demon Powder.
After advancing a certain distance, the human troops quickly retreated again. When they saw the Evil Spirits begin to pull back, they charged forward once more. This back-and-forth happened three times, and once more than half of the Evil Spirits on the ground were affected by the Butterfly Demon Powder, the entire army finally launched a real attack.
This time it was a full-scale assault. The moment the army made contact with the Evil Spirits, nearly a thousand of them were killed.
At the same time, several humans and dozens of Spirits appeared beneath the Blood Spirit Fruit Tree.
The Blood Spirit Fruit Tree stood only about two meters tall, and with so many people and Spirits surrounding it, they completely encircled it. However, this time, everyone and every Spirit dared not be greedy; they took one Blood Spirit Fruit and immediately fled.
However, as three hundred Cicada Calls reached their peak volume, a hundred Blood Mosquitos sprang into action. Most notably, three hundred Dragonfly Demons seemed to have instantly killed five or six humans and seven or eight Spirits.
Even so, Lian Yun and Eastern Sword couldn't help but exclaim in admiration.
They felt that those humans and Spirits had seized their opportunity with remarkable precision, seemingly without any error.
Just as the two were marveling for too long, they suddenly turned in shock to look at the battlefield. They saw that over a hundred formations from the front lines of the human troops had inexplicably transformed into blood mist.
