Chapter 10: Human and Ghost
Hundreds, even thousands of Spirits formed an army, charging fiercely towards a single point. That point became the central defense line among various cooperative groups.
It was not the entire group of thousands moving collectively, but rather the team defending the center that rushed to a new position for the central defense line, while their original position was taken over by teams from both sides.
This way, chaos within the group could be avoided.
However, among the thousands of Tyrants, many seemed to have already noticed certain characteristics of the Human Defense Line.
Before other Tyrants led their armies to attack the human race, they concealed their forces within the Evil Tide. Once some Tyrant's army made contact with the humans, they quickly gathered their troops and charged towards the Human Defense Line not far from where a Tyrant had engaged with the humans.
As a result, even though many teams within some groups were qualified to defend the central line, there were still not a thousand teams capable of holding this entire defense line against the internal side of Fengdu.
Or perhaps this defense line simply did not have a thousand teams to begin with. How could they withstand a thousand Demon Clan legions within the Evil Tide?
The purpose of the Tyrants was clear: to breach Fengdu's interior. The humans would dare not pursue them, thus nearly a thousand armies, amounting to almost a million Demon Army troops, charged towards a defense line held by only about ten thousand humans.
The outcome was predictable!
Along the Human Defense Line, breaches appeared everywhere. What made matters worse was that some Spirits originally hidden within the Evil Tide saw a glimmer of hope and recklessly surged towards the gaps in the Human Defense Line, amplifying the impact of the thousand Demon Clan legions and making it difficult to seal those breaches.
The casualties among the human race soared uncontrollably.
This was why those thousands atop high buildings dared not participate in battle.
Even though the human race was exceptionally united and held significant advantages, they could not withstand the sheer number of Spirits within the Evil Tide.
However, despite the Human Defense Line being riddled with holes, initially there were four or five tiers along that entire line. Thus, some teams that had originally gathered together now adjusted their positions and formed a circle to fight independently.
This turned the Human Defense Line into a broken waterline, scattering like raindrops.
At this moment, the Tyrant of the Demon Clan was solely focused on rushing into Fengdu and had no intention of entangling with the human race. After breaking through the defense line, they surged forward, completely disregarding their own troops.
As a result, their army lost its leader and fell into chaos, each fighting for themselves.
In contrast, the momentary confusion within the Demon Clan's army provided the humans with a glimmer of opportunity. With full force attacks, a single team could eliminate more than one-fifth of an enemy army in an instant.
Thus, almost immediately after the defense line was breached, nearly one-fifth of the Evil Tide's Demon Clan forces vanished.
By this point, the entire Evil Tide had diminished by nearly one-third compared to its initial strength.
Moreover, the most powerful batch of Demon Clan had already departed. Although the remaining Demon Clan still numbered significantly, the overall strength of the Evil Tide had decreased by nearly fifty percent from its original state.
Consequently, it seemed that for the humans to re-establish their defense line and annihilate the entire Evil Tide would not be particularly difficult.
However, there were still considerable casualties among the human ranks. Additionally, Spirits were irrational; some ordinary Spirits had followed the Tyrant across the Human Defense Line but now turned back to hunt down humans.
This forced some sections of what was once a unified defense line to now defend against attacks from both sides, revealing disparities between various teams.
Some teams were unafraid of being attacked from two fronts, while others struggled to defend against assaults from both directions.
Furthermore, with the crisis of human extinction having passed, some team leaders began harboring ulterior motives, leading to a lack of unity compared to before.
This essentially meant that once the Human Defense Line was breached, there would be no possibility of re-establishing it.
It wasn't due to a lack of capability; rather, it was because some were unwilling.
Even within the depths of Evil Tide, Lian Yun could hear the malicious whispers of some people, eager to take advantage of the situation.
"Li Chen's ten spirit liquids can be adjusted in my team!"
"Wang Dafeng, join my team and you'll be safe!"
"Huang Erdan, you still haven't given me an explanation for that incident three months ago."
The crisis of Evil Tide had not truly been resolved. The human factions were not only fracturing but also returning to a state of complex distrust.
There were threats and coercion, settling scores, and even fabrications.
Lian Yun believed that the forty or so teams from Silver Prosperity would undoubtedly face similar situations.
Most of those who participated in this battle were Armed Ghost Hunters of A-rank or above, and this single battle had provided many teams with enough spirit liquid for breakthroughs.
At this moment, many were already considering leaving Fengdu, while numerous individuals and teams around them were in crisis. So, if they didn't seize some resources now, when would they?
This was humanity's inherent flaw! Though humans were human, they could also be as ruthless as ghosts.
Unable to dwell on it too much due to concerns for Zhou Tong and the others' safety, Lian Yun ceased absorbing Spirit within Evil Tide. Instead, he focused entirely on slaughtering and acquiring spirit liquid.
Once the Spirit within the Box was completely dissolved and the last trace of Corrupted Blood flowed from his nostrils, he allowed the darkness to return to his body. Then he charged out of Evil Tide with Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui.
Looking around, he saw many faces filled with horror, but Lian Yun paid them no mind. Spotting Zhou Tong and the others, he immediately rushed over.
As soon as Lian Yun landed among the Ten People, the incoming Spirit inexplicably retreated.
Perhaps it was Lian Yun's aura of menace, or perhaps the rumors of Lian Yun's ruthlessness had already spread silently among the Evil Tide.
Zhou Tong and Murong Ying both scrutinized Lian Yun for a while. Seeing that Lian Yun's breath was relatively stable and there were no visible injuries, they nodded in satisfaction, only to feel shocked afterward.
However, Lian Yun spoke in a deep voice, "The Evil Spirit Tide won't last long. We should pursue its remnants; perhaps along the way we can capture one or two powerful Ghost Slaves. Survival of the fittest!"
"Understood!" came the reply from the subordinates.
Turning around, Lian Yun led Zhou Tong, Murong Ying, and the other Ten People away. After taking a few steps, Lian Yun slightly turned their head and cast a cold glance at Silver Prosperity.
Silver Prosperity felt a bitter pang.
Originally, Lian Yun had shown little regard for the lives of others. However, they had just shared hardships together, truly standing by each other's side in life and death. Now that the crisis had merely lessened rather than disappeared, some were eagerly waiting to take advantage of the situation and betray their allies.
This would inevitably lead to diminished gains for some teams, or even losses that outweighed any benefits, with a real risk of total annihilation.
It was clear that they had been cooperating and helping each other; now, however, some were ready to turn against their allies. This was nothing short of inhumane behavior.
Yet Silver Prosperity, being the mediator from the East District, did not step forward to speak up for anyone or to stop other teams from acting recklessly. This was a form of inaction.
