Chapter 94: A Bountiful Return
"Woo woo woo~~~ Aoo aoo aoo~~~"
The heart-wrenching Howling of Ghosts and Wolves momentarily drowned out the thunderous roar caused by the Evil Spirit Tide.
Nearly a thousand frenzied Spirits began to attack indiscriminately, targeting the rampaging Spirits, the calm Spirits, and even the Evil Spirits behind them. Although it was undoubtedly a suicidal move, they seemed to be driven solely by their instinct to attack, striking at every creature and Spirit they encountered.
Naturally, Lian Yun was not spared from this chaos.
However, this was precisely the effect Lian Yun desired.
Big Head, Sword Mountain, Black, Three Spirits, along with Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui—eight powerful Ghost Slaves—swiftly sprang into action. They either attacked the severely injured Spirits, pursued fleeing Spirits, or directly captured the wounded Spirits, bringing them to Lian Yun's side.
Chen Er Gou did not dare to be idle either. He first poked half of his body out from Lian Yun's form, assessed the positions of his eight siblings, and then determined who would reach Lian Yun first. After that, he withdrew back into Lian Yun's body, leaving his hands outside to grab anything he could find. Once he caught something, he would squeeze it tightly and then pull it into Lian Yun without hesitation.
Before long, his hands emerged from Lian Yun's back, making it seem as if Lian Yun had grown an extra pair of hands.
From then on, Chen Er Gou did not poke his body out again; he continuously extended his hands from Lian Yun's back.
This way, Big Head and the other eight Ghost Slaves understood that they could simply approach Lian Yun's back.
As a result, they would not interfere with Lian Yun's combat, making things even more convenient than before.
While fighting and retreating simultaneously, under Lian Yun's Malicious Bomb and with the Golden Dragon and Golden Tiger causing havoc within the Evil Tide, Lian Yun managed to capture over two hundred Spirits in this wave.
Once the surrounding Spirits had mostly distanced themselves from Lian Yun, he summoned all his Ghost Slaves back and hurried toward the edge of Fengdu.
At the same time, Sword Intent enveloped the air beneath his nostrils.
During his run, Lian Yun used various buildings to maneuver sideways. After moving about a kilometer to one side, he finally stopped and began to enlarge the Malicious Bomb he was creating.
When he encountered the vanguard of the Evil Tide again, he unleashed the Malicious Bomb and went on a frenzy of harvesting.
This time, due to being nearly a thousand meters closer to their original position, many Spirits were unaware of Lian Yun's previous series of battles. As a result, far more Spirits were caught off guard by the Malicious Bomb than before.
In this second wave, Lian Yun captured nearly four hundred Spirits.
At this point, Lian Yun's journey had already yielded an impressive harvest. Initially, he wasn't aiming for too much, but considering the considerable distance remaining to the edge of Fengdu, he decided to employ the same tactic again. He returned to his original position and then shifted sideways. It was predictable that once he reached a kilometer away, he wouldn't even have to wait for his Malicious Bomb to be ready.
Thus, this time, the lateral movement significantly reduced the distance he had to retreat. Almost as soon as he arrived at his new location, Lian Yun spotted the vanguard of the Evil Tide.
Without needing to say much, he fired his Malicious Bomb and once again went on a rampage of harvesting.
After this wave of battle, Lian Yun captured nearly five hundred Spirits.
In fact, the situation during this third wave of attacks was not much different from the second wave. However, due to the improved coordination among all his Ghost Slaves and their newfound combat experience, he achieved even greater gains.
Once the third battle concluded, Lian Yun estimated that before reaching the edge of Fengdu, he could still launch one or two more attacks.
However, he had already decided to withdraw after two or three more assaults. Having completed three waves felt like pushing his limits.
Considering it was wise to know when to stop—so as not to provoke any resentment from certain entities within the Evil Spirit Tide or attract unwanted attention from observers at the edge of Fengdu—he ultimately adhered to his decision.
He instructed all his Ghost Slaves, including Hei, to return into their Boxes and then shifted back to his original position, continuing onward toward the edge of Fengdu.
As he made his way back with his team, Lian Yun did not advance recklessly. He remained cautious of potential ambushes ahead and allowed enough time for the Boxes within him to digest the captured Spirits.
Truthfully, Lian Yun's greatest gain from this expedition was Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui; however, the Spirits he captured were also significant.
It should be noted that slower Spirits had mostly been devoured by Evil Spirits long ago. The Spirits that consistently led the charge at the forefront of the Evil Tide might not be the strongest but were certainly close to being top-tier Spirits.
As a result, Lian Yun had captured nearly two thousand Spirits in total, most of which were equivalent to Top-Tier Peak Realm Spirits.
Although they weren't King-level entities, the sheer number of two thousand Spirits contained a considerable amount of spiritual energy that couldn't be overlooked.
However, Big Head and Lian Yun's original seven Ghost Slaves could only absorb a limited amount of gray mist without breaking through to King's Realm. Their ability to suppress their realms was also not high; it seemed they had already stabilized at a certain limit.
Thus, only Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui—the two new members—could quickly absorb the gray mist before being compressed by their Boxes to expel Spiritual Energy.
Yet Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui truly lived up to their titles as Fierce Soldier Spirits.
While their individual strength wasn't invincible among their peers, they were certainly formidable opponents. Even so, they effectively compressed their realms: on their first attempt, they managed to compress down to Level C; on their second attempt, they surprisingly reached mid-Level C; and on their third attempt, they achieved upper-Level C.
It seemed to follow a very regular pattern, almost as if it had its own sense of rhythm.
Although Lian Yun did not see them, he could feel the changes in the two Ghost Slaves, which naturally pleased him.
As he continued forward, Lian Yun encountered no obstacles from anyone. However, he noticed numerous signs of battle on the ground and the occasional scattered Spirits.
Lian Yun had already stopped harvesting these Spirits; instead, he slowed his pace slightly to prevent any of them from being sent by others to scout for something.
Thus, even when attacked by Spirits, he merely killed them without collecting anything, allowing their bodies to dissipate into smoke.
After nearly half an hour, Lian Yun arrived at the edge of Fengdu a few minutes ahead of schedule.
He then noticed that on the many dilapidated skyscrapers ahead, shadows flickered in every window and broken wall, with ghostly figures looming everywhere.
In front of him, there were two groups seemingly waiting for someone on the ground.
Seeing them, Lian Yun smiled lightly. He then reached up to wipe away the last traces of Corrupted Blood from his nose and took a deep breath, forcefully striking the air to pull away the lingering fierce and malicious aura from his body, clothes, and even his head.
