Chapter 64: No Spirit Core
The Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider went berserk the moment it lost the Deep Blue Light to Lian Yun.
For some unknown reason, its body suddenly swelled, growing nearly one and a half times larger. Four beams of red light erupted from its front, exuding an aura of relentless malice.
It broke through the wall and instantly appeared before Lian Yun.
Its speed had increased by more than threefold.
Such speed was extremely challenging for Lian Yun, but he was already prepared. As the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider broke through, Lian Yun had retreated, and what the spider approached was merely Lian Yun's afterimage.
Without hesitation, Lian Yun dove into the nearest sewer and continued to run.
The Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider pursued relentlessly, but it had completely lost its rationality. Although its speed had increased significantly, its movements were somewhat unstable. In its frantic rush, it stumbled and crashed against the walls repeatedly.
Lian Yun initially considered turning around to attack, but upon seeing the countless falling rocks above him, he decided against it.
Although the falling rocks were not fast and many were quite small, if the battle escalated too quickly, even small stones could cause significant damage; a mere scratch could turn into a piercing wound. This was why Lian Yun had chosen to fight in an open area at first.
Otherwise, in the narrow confines of the sewer, the sheer size of the Evil Spirit would pose a disadvantage for an individual. If one were agile enough, fighting in the sewer could actually be beneficial.
However, this was also why he couldn't use spiritual power. If he could harness spiritual energy, he could create a protective barrier around himself—an advantage that Armed Ghost Hunters had when facing Evil Spirits.
As he continued forward, Lian Yun saw an iron barrier blocking his path. Instead of being alarmed, he felt a surge of excitement. He charged forward and swept his sword horizontally as he passed the sewer entrance, sending dozens of iron rods glowing with sword light flying behind him.
Ahead lay a fork in the path with two more iron barriers. Lian Yun pressed on again and shattered another barrier, sending nearly a hundred iron rods flying in his wake.
As he turned, the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider had just burst out of the entrance. Lian Yijian pointed forward, and nearly a hundred iron rods shot out like arrows released from a bow.
However, these iron rods did not target the body of the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider. Instead, they bundled together in groups of three or five, striking at the joints between its legs and body.
This greatly restricted the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider's mobility.
At the same time, Lian Yun rushed forward. When he reached the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider, he recklessly struck its head three times, deforming it before springing back.
Seeing the Deep Blue Light emanating from the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider, Lian Yun's face lit up with joy.
What followed was somewhat cruel.
Using Sword Intent to control the hundred iron rods, he continuously pinned down the spider's legs to limit its movement, while relentlessly striking with his Wu Tai.
He harvested clusters of Deep Blue Light.
The Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider let out a series of wretched cries, its voice as mournful as it could be, its eyes filled with madness!
Yet in the face of this situation, Lian Yun wore a broad smile; one could hardly describe his actions as anything but cruel.
After a dozen heavy strikes, the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider gradually fell silent, perhaps weakened to a state of exhaustion.
Despite this, Lian Yun did not dare to let his guard down. He continued to restrict its mobility and controlled several iron rods to fly into the spider's mouth to prevent it from spraying venom, then resumed his relentless strikes.
After another dozen blows, the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider was on the brink of death and no longer emitted any Deep Blue Light.
After striking twice more, Lian Yun saw that the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider was still on the brink of death, yet there was not a single wound on its body, and it still had not emitted any Deep Blue Light.
With that, Lian Yun put away his smile and his expression turned serious.
He was eager to enter his consciousness and check whether the Deep Blue Light inside the Box was indeed Purple Qi. However, he was also worried that the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider might launch a dying counterattack.
Yet, he did not want to investigate outside either, fearing that any unnatural behavior of his would be noticed by Zhou Tong, revealing some hidden secrets.
After much contemplation, Lian Yun resolutely struck the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider three more times to ensure it could not gather strength to retaliate in the short term. Only then did he retreat into a nearby sewer and enter his consciousness to examine the Box within him.
Upon entering the Box, Lian Yun discovered that it was filled with Deep Blue Energy, which continuously gathered to form strands of Purple Qi.
The Ghost Slaves were all meditating with their eyes closed, each in different postures. Some were sitting cross-legged like the Three Spirits, while others lay sprawled out like Big Head Ghost and Sword Mountain. There were also those who crawled on the ground, like Hei. Chen Er Gou stood with his eyes closed, looking quite content.
Although the Purple Qi formed from the gathering of Deep Blue Energy was quite scarce, it was still divided into seven portions flowing into the Ghost Bodies of Lian Yun's seven Ghost Slaves.
Among them, Hei absorbed the most—almost a quarter of the total—followed by Big Head and Sword Mountain, with Two Ghosts also taking in a quarter. Big Head absorbed about one-fifth more than Sword Mountain.
Chen Er Gou and the Three Spirits shared the remaining half; however, surprisingly, Chen Er Gou's share was roughly double that of each of the Three Spirits.
This meant that Chen Er Gou absorbed one-tenth of the total Purple Qi. It seemed that Chen Er Gou's resources were better than those of the Three Spirits!
However, Lian Yun did not make a definitive judgment since it was also possible that the Three Spirits had given their share to Chen Er Gou.
Regardless of how it was determined, even if the Deep Blue Light was not Purple Qi but could still coalesce into Purple Qi, that was enough for Lian Yun!
Lian Yun took a quick glance before immediately refocusing his mind.
Upon reaching the fork in the road, he noticed that the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider was not making any unusual movements, which allowed him to breathe a slight sigh of relief.
What followed was a relentless series of brutal attacks, lasting over ten rounds, until he finally saw the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider slump down, seemingly exhausted. Only then did he stop and swing his sword to sever the creature's head.
He did not use Spiritual Energy because after losing all its strength, the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider had been struck by Lian Yun several more times. Its body could no longer continue to 'heal' itself, and after being battered repeatedly, it was reduced to a state resembling mush, with no visible blood.
However, after decapitating the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider, Lian Yun felt a sense of confusion; this Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider surprisingly did not possess a Spirit Core.
At first, Lian Yun found this puzzling, but soon he speculated that his continuous strikes had drained the creature to the point where it had to use its Spirit Core for sustenance.
Thus, the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider had exhausted its Spirit Core and lost its regenerative abilities, ultimately leading to its cruel demise at Lian Yun's hands.
After pondering for a moment, Lian Yun dragged the corpse of the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider back.
He knew that Zhou Tong and the others would surely not believe that an Evil Spirit could lack a Spirit Core. If he returned without the vile corpse of the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider, Zhou Tong would likely jump to wild conclusions.
To avoid being misunderstood by Zhou Tong, Lian Yun decided to bring back the body of the Ghost-Faced Wolf Spider as proof.
